Published by Gary Friedman (A0.889878). The original version for cello and piano was my first formal composition when I started composing in 1998. When my brother, Ralph, heard it, he cried and said that he wished that my parents could have heard it, too. The form and harmonies of this piece are mostly traditional, but there are a few surprises. There is a cantorial cello cadenza. A trumpet and tuba are added to the usual chamber orchestra with piano, just to play an Oh My Darling Clementine counter-melody in one variation but flute and bassoon have cues and can do this nicely. The recording of the beautifully expressive performance by Ken Hoppe and the College of Marin Symphony conducted by Tara Flandreau (who edited the string parts) is of such poor sound quality that I have uploaded the computer playback as the sound clip, which is of course quite mechanical sounding. This is the first publication of the Jewish Dance for cello solo and orchestra by Lev PULVER (1883 – 1970), based on the autograph manuscript of the score, realized and edited by Sergei Pichugin. The piano reduction of the composition has been made by the author. The piece was composed in 1942–43 in the midst of World War II. Presumably it was never performed since 1950, being completely forgotten. Jewish Dance is definitely among the masterpieces of Yiddish musical culture of the 20th century. Introductory text to the publication, written by Sergei Pichugin, includes a short biography of the composer and a description of the Jewish Dance.

Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White or Cerezo Rosa or Ciliegi Rosa or Gummy Mambo, is the English version of Cerisiers Roses et Pommiers Blancs, a popular song with music by Louiguy written in 1950. Pérez Prado's recording of the song as an instrumental with his orchestra featuring trumpeter Billy Regis, whose trumpet sound would slide down and up before the melody would resume, was the most popular version in 1955, reaching number one for 10 weeks on the Billboard chart. It became a gold record. Pérez had first recorded this title for the movie Underwater! (1955), where Jane Russell can be seen dancing to the song. Cantique de Noël The French composer Adolphe Adam was already famous as a composer of many successful ballets and operas. Then, in the 1840s, he wrote his most famous work - O Holy Night. The original song title was Minuit Chretiens or Cantique de Noël.  Placide Cappeau provided the original song lyrics. The song was first performed in Roquemaure by the opera singer Emily Laurey at midnight mass in 1847. It became very popular among the French, much like Silent Night was famous elsewhere. In 1850, John S. Dwight, a Unitarian minister and music teacher, translated the song into English.  Adolphe Adam Adam studied organ and composition at the Paris Conservatoire in his younger years. He also played the timpani in the Conservatoire orchestra. Adam used his savings and borrowed money to open a new opera house - the fourth opera house in Paris in 1847. Unfortunately, the Revolution of 1848 forced him to close. He taught composition at the Paris Conservatoire from 1849 until he died in 1856. Placide Cappeau The poet Cappeau was an advocate of the French Enlightenment philosopher Voltaire. Voltaire was renowned for criticizing the Catholic church, religious intolerance, and dogma in general. Consequently, Cappeau made the Redeemer figure in his song a kind of reformer of injustices, particularly the problem of original sin. To begin with, people recognized Cappeau's theology as eccentric, probably even doubtful. Theology In the earlier form of Minuit, the Christ figure descends to intervene with His Father's plan to punish humanity. Traditional doctrine pronounces that Christ came from love, not to intervene. This version also declares that Christ appeared to delete the original sin of Adam. Cappeau removed this part from his poem years later because he didn't believe it. He preferred to portray Christ as the reformer of disparity and unfairness. Before long, the writer/politician Alphonse de Lamartine called the Minuit the Marseillaise of religion. Most French churchmen agreed with this idea but did not consider it a tribute.  Â

An introspective and meditative work with a lot of dynamic and phrasing nuance. Works well for church meditations or recital encores. Background First of all, Scriabin composed mostly for the solo piano and also the orchestra. This is probably because he was a gifted pianist and therefore certainly appreciated the piano. Scriabin grew up in the late Romantic period, consequently, he was fond of the great piano masters of the time. As a result, he wrote his first noteworthy compositions in the manner of Chopin and Liszt. Forms Likewise, Scriabin used many of the same forms as Chopin. These certainly include the étude, prelude, nocturne, and even the mazurka. In contrast, as he developed his own sense of style his music became more and more unusual. So, the last five of his Piano Sonatas do not have a key signature and therefore lean towards atonality. Philosophy Scriabin also developed a keen interest in philosophy and likewise poetry. He was above all particularly fascinated by Nietzsche, Delville, and Blavatsky. Consequently, he finally established his own ideas about metaphysics and certainly mysticism. Scriabin consequently advanced theories about the relationship between color and musical keys. Synesthesia He also may have experienced a condition called synesthesia where he could probably sense a response created from a different stimulus. Therefore, it was almost as if he could see music and hear colors. Scriabin, therefore, arranged the colors in a circle similar to the circle-of-fifths and assigned each key area a color. Finally, he assigned the key of C to the color red, while the key of G was orange. Similarly, he assigned D to yellow, A to green, and so forth. Strangely, he did not differentiate between major and minor key colors.  Multimedia Hence, his ability to translate colors into music certainly gave Scriabin a most noteworthy interest in creating multimedia events. Furthermore, He designed his biggest work, the Mysterium, to last an entire week. Even more, Scriabin made plans not only for music, but also colored lights, incense, and dancing. He designed the performance to occur in the foothills of the Himalaya mountains. The Mysterium was never performed, and only sketches of the work remain. Modern Performances In modern times, we often experience performances of Scriabin’s most famous completed works accompanied by colored laser lights and incense. These are the Poem of Ecstasy (completed in 1908) and the Poem of Fire (completed in 1910). The lighting effects for these early performances were accomplished by the clavier à lumiéres. It was a keyboard instrument that projected colored light onto a screen.

The best known March of the set, it had its premiere in Liverpool on 19 October 1901, with Elgar conducting the Liverpool Orchestral Society. The Trio contains the tune known as Land of Hope and Glory. In 1902 the tune was re-used, in modified form, for the Land of hope and glory section of his Coronation Ode for King Edward VII. The words were further modified to fit the original tune, and the result has since become a fixture at the Last Night of the Proms, and an English sporting anthem. In the United States, the Trio section Land of Hope and Glory of March No. 1 is often known simply as Pomp and Circumstance or as The Graduation March and is played as the processional tune at virtually all high school and some college graduation ceremonies. It was first played at such a ceremony on 28 June 1905, at Yale University, where the Professor of Music Samuel Sanford had invited his friend Elgar to attend commencement and receive an honorary doctorate of music. Elgar accepted, and Sanford made certain he was the star of the proceedings, engaging the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, the College Choir, the Glee Club, the music faculty members, and New York musicians to perform two parts from Elgar's oratorio The Light of Life and, as the graduates and officials marched out, Pomp and Circumstance March No. 1. Elgar repaid the compliment by dedicating his Introduction and Allegro to Sanford later that year. The tune soon became de rigueur at American graduations, used primarily as a processional at the opening of the ceremony. English • German.Cellist, conductor and composer Georg Goltermann, born in Hannover on 19.8.1824, died in Frankfurt (Main) on 29.12.1898, had cello lessons with the principal cellist of the royal court orchestra in Hanover, August Christian Prell (1805-1885), a pupil of Bernhard Romberg. From 1847-49 he continued his studies in Munich with the celebrated cellist Joseph Menter and studied composition with Ignaz Lachner, Director of Music at the court in Munich. Goltermann undertook numerous concert tours as a cellist; from 1853 he was Assistant Director of Music at the municipal theatre in Frankfurt am Main, becoming Director of Music from 1854. He wrote numerous pieces for cello and had a particular gift for the Romantic character piece, composing lyrical pieces with titles such as Ballade, Elegie, Song Without Words and various dances. As his compositions are generally not too demanding, they are well liked by amateur musicians and frequently used for tuition purposes. This Mazurka comes from the set of Trois morceaux caractéristiques op. 41, published by Schott in 1864 (plate no. 17419).

English • German.Hugo Becker was a notable cellist and teacher: born in Strasbourg on 13.2.1863, he died in Geiselgasteig near Munich on 30.7.1941. He started cello lessons with his father Jean Becker and was later taught by A. Piatti, J. de Swert and F. Grützmacher. Becker was initially employed as a cellist at the Mannheim National Theatre and then as principal cellist in the opera orchestra in Frankfurt am Main (1884–1886). From 1887–1906 he taught cello at the Hoch Conservatoire in Frankfurt, from 1909–1929 as a professor at the Academy of Music in Berlin. His book on the Mechanics and Aesthetics of Playing the Cello (Berlin 1929) deals with the physiological principles of cello playing and is still worth reading today. Schott published Becker’s Cello Concerto in A major op. 10 as well as some short character pieces. Andante religioso op. 2 is in three sections (A-B-A) with a lyrical A section and a faster rhythmic middle section. It was published by Schott in 1887 as plate number 24419.
