Following in the footsteps of Schnibbles for Two, these duets offer variety, fun, and encourage creative expression and musical experimentation. This duet book asks the student to consider multiple interpretations, and making connections to other art forms, such as visual art, creative writing, and dance. Used as a compliment to any band method, this collection helps to bridge the gap between unison playing and the more ambitious ensemble repertoire that requires both independence and sometimes extreme patience, especially for those that do not carry the melody. With Schnoodles, each part takes turns carrying and supporting the melody giving each player the opportunity to experience both roles simultaneously. While Schnoodles give each player a lot to play, they also give players some creative choices. None come with a prescribed tempo, and most allow students to determine the appropriate articulations and dynamics for the piece based on their abilities, preferences, and interpretations - and hopefully - guidance from a teacher! Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808675).     The defeat of Igor Svyatoslavich, a Rus’ prince, in his 1185 campaign against invading Cuman (Polovtsy) tribes was immortalized in the Russian epic, The Lay of Igor’s Campaign. Seven centuries later, Alexander Borodin started work on an opera based on that old tale. Borodin died before finishing, but Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Alexander Glazunov completed Prince Igor, and it was performed for the first time in 1890. Sixty-three years later the Broadway production Kismet opened featuring songs adapted by Robert Wright and George Forrest from the music of Borodin. Arguably, the most popular of the show’s songs was Stranger in Paradise, which was based on the Gliding Dance of the Maidens from the Polovtsian Dances of Prince Igor.     This beautiful brass quintet arrangement of Gliding Dance of the Maidens was adapted from the orchestra score. The key is A major, time signature is 4/4 and tempo marking is Andantino at the opening, slowing to a suggested quarter note = 63 at measure 15. Trumpets, Horn in F and Trombone all play a few grace notes. Highest notes for Trumpets are their G-sharp just above the staff; for Trombone, E above the staff. While not particularly challenging technically, the key to playing this piece is interpretation and feeling.    This arrangement was completed in 2017, and performance time runs about 2 minutes, 38 seconds. The opening cencerro and reggaeton rhythmic motives proclaimed by each instrument is significant in that it appropriates the works essence and soul. Sandungueo is a style of dance and party music associated with reggaeton. This reggaeton motive returns throughout the piece and culminates with it. The piece emulates a jazz ensemble where there are sections in which most instruments are called upon to solo against a rhythmic basso continuo or vamp. Latin and Hip-Hop rhythmic motives are prominent and integral to the work.

Sweetwater Brass Press #4819845. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808695).   Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov composed his third opera, The Snow Maiden, during the period 1880-1881. Based on Alexander Ostrovsky’s play of the same name, The Snow Maiden uses fairy-tale characters to portray the opposing forces of nature, winter versus summer. Act 3 contains the Dance of the Skomorokhi. Skomorokhi were traveling performers in old Russia and, in connection with this composition, the term is usually translated as tumblers or clowns. Rimsky-Korsakov also included this selection as one of four movements he compiled into a concert suite based on the opera. Dance of the Tumblers has become one of his most frequently performed and best known pieces.  Light and uplifting, Dance of the Tumblers is vibrant, energetic and addictive. It takes the form of, as one commenter wrote, a classical sonata-structure, complete with development section, invigoratingly intensified reprise, and a veritable whirlwind of a coda. This brass quintet arrangement retains the original key signature of C but adjusts register to make the melodies accessible and playable. As a result, most notes are well within the normal playing range of the five brass instruments. Trumpet 1’s highest note is its A above the staff. At measures 132 and 133, Trumpet 2 has the option of playing some high notes (including one C above its staff) an octave down. Tuba plays mostly in the lowest register, with quite a few low F notes and one low E. Most instruments have some octave jumps, but all have a lot of notes to play in a very short time: many, many sixteenth notes. The score is marked Vivace, and the audio sample moves along at a pretty fast clip. But of course, the speed at which performers actually play the piece is up to them, a matter of interpretation.   This arrangement was completed in 2019, and performance time runs about 3 minutes, 38 seconds. This is not an arrangement for the 'faint of heart'. It is difficult, because the piece is difficult... but what a magnificent piece of music it is. According to legend, Death appears at midnight every year on Halloween. Death calls forth the dead from their graves to dance for him while he plays his fiddle (here represented by the trumpets). His skeletons dance for him until the rooster crows at dawn, when they must return to their graves until the next year.The original piece opens with a playing a single note, D, played twelve times on the Harp, in my arrangement this is played by Tuba and Tubular Bell (the twelve strokes of midnight). The trumpet enters playing the tritone, which was known as the diabolus in musica (the Devil in music). Out of interest in the original, the solo violin plays this, during the Medieval and Baroque eras, consisting of an A and an Eâ™-in an example of scordatura tuning, the violinist's E string was actually been tuned down to an Eâ™ to create the dissonant tritone., no need for such alterations here.

It was one of many I made for the Seras Brass Quintet which I helped form while studying at the University of Liverpool. In those days the brass quintet repertoire was limited and, to an impecunious student, expensive. Consequently we made many of our own arrangements and this one became a popular concert item – often used as an encore.We didn’t have Derby mutes (I still don’t!) but we managed to change the straight mute successfully enough. If it’s a problem just cover the bell with the left hand – the main thing is to create a different timbre, after all.
