As composed and recorded by Kathleen Ryan on her CD Under the Greenwood Tree.Kathleen's composer notes: A story song that began with a simple Western waltz that came to me while we were driving into town one day. (I have a way of notating a melody very quickly so that I don’t lose music in such situations.) Until I sat down to do the first recording of this music, Water in a Dry Land was still just the little waltz. But while the music expressed all the longing for water that we here in the dry land feel, it didn’t actually have any water in it, and as soon as I started recording I wanted some watery music to be there. So I made up the middle section, which seems to me to be quite watery, and practiced it and thought I was done. Then the next time we recorded it, on listening to the playback, all of a sudden I wanted to hear the dry land! That was the genesis of the opening chords, which repeat after the middle (water) section. I was still refining (that is, re-writing) this music up to the very day I recorded it!Advanced: a challenging piece that offers many contrasts of mood and style. Architectural in its structure, with sections depicting the sandstone cliffs of New Mexico, the earth’s longing for water, and the welcome blessing of gentle rains.

October 8-9 (©2018) – solo piano. I was asked to write a short piece for a September 2018 fire survivors performance of monologues about the October 9, 2017 Redwood Complex fire. The piece depicts events from the afternoon and evening before until the early morning of the fire. These words fit with the sections: Red Flag Warning, Jaye came home from residency! hot wind, Happy reunion, hot wind, romantic evening, hot wind, warm embrace, sleep, smoke or just a hot night?, sleep, Yanahay texts Potter Valley on Fire, red on our ridge, Fire!, how again?, who to call? Everyone we know between here and Potter, landing ember fires, propane tank booms. In that year we experienced a fire three months earlier which burned most of our land including an orchard; the house was spared. In this fire it was an achievable goal to water down the small unburned dry grass and protect home and cabin; many others in our community who had not had the first fire had homes and even lives lost as it was a real firestorm with high winds. In 2019 I wrote an orchestral version with piano that will be published later. The ending on the audio file is different and was not written; I wrote out a piano part for the symphonic version so improvisation is encouraged to depict a fire out of control and a community's experience of that. Score. 6 pages. Timothy Stapay #454662. Published by Timothy Stapay (A0.847962). Scarborough Fair is a traditional English ballad. A famous version was recorded by Simon and Garfunkel. The lyrics of Scarborough Fair appear to have something in common with a Scottish ballad titled The Elfin Knight (Child Ballad #2, collected by Francis James Child, which has been traced as far back as 1670. In this ballad, an elf threatens to abduct a young woman to be his lover unless she can perform an impossible task (For thou must shape a sark to me / Without any cut or heme, quoth he); she responds with a list of tasks that he must first perform (I have an aiker of good ley-land / Which lyeth low by yon sea-strand). Dozens of versions existed by the end of the 18th century. A number of older versions refer to locations other than Scarborough Fair, including Wittingham Fair, Cape Ann, twixt Berwik and Lyne, etc. Many versions do not mention a place name and are often generically titled (The Lovers' Tasks, My Father Gave Me an Acre of Land. The references to the traditional English fair, Scarborough Fair and the refrain parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme date to 19th-century versions, and the refrain may have been borrowed from the ballad Riddles Wisely Expounded, which has a similar plot. And tell her to make me a cambric shirt, Savoury sage, rosemary, and thyme, Without any seam or needlework, And then she shall be a true love of mine. The dove returned with an olive branch in its beak; dry land was reappearing. Petrus Plancius assigned the stars of this southern constellation to the Biblical story, and Johann Bayer drew it on his atlas in 1603. Performance Time 1 1/2 minutes. 3 pages. On Titan though, our water cycle is replaced with hydrocarbons, it rains liquid methane, and the surface temperature averages -179 degrees Celsius. The first section of Probe features contrapuntal melodies with a set of roto-toms representing the probe, flower pots representing the possibility of something growing in such a frigid place, and a rainstick representing the potential food source for a hypothetical methanogen. Perseverance will roam the dry, dusty surface of Mars beginning in 2021 drilling and preparing samples that will, for the first time, be returned to Earth. Perseverance will also carry with it a small rotorcraft to prove the ability of flight within Mars’ thin atmosphere. In the second section, tonal harmony is replaced with sandpaper blocks, claves, and bongos with the roto-toms now playing the role of both the secondary rotorcraft and the Martian wind. Alvin has been ferrying explorers to the deepest parts of Earth's oceans and providing insights into the origins of life since the 1970s. The discovery of large tubeworms living in an environment without sunlight, thriving on the energy provided to them by hydrothermal vents on the ocean floor, changed our understanding of how life might thrive in many environments across the universe. The conclusion of Probe features Boomwhackers appearing as tubeworms.
