Int.: Eya Grimonia.Even the simplest things need a solid internal structure that supports their discourse and transcends it. This work was a birthday present to an 11-year-old girl who was born on the 11th of the month 11, and is built on her onomastic numbers [4, 5, 5] which generate the harmonic and melodic basis together with those of the composer [9, 7], those of her mother [6, 5, 7] and those of her brother [5, 5, 5]. Thus, the first movement, “Dawnâ€, is structured in 11 sections (it is a gift from the age of 11) of 4+5+5 bars. “Reading†has 9 sections of 4 bars and the melodic-harmonic sequence is formed by the complex [4, 5, 6, 7, 9], so we all find ourselves involved in the reading plot. The third movement, “Slowlyâ€, in 5/4, a reference to the names of the girl and her brother, has 3 sections of 5+5+5 bars; the brother’s turning round endlessly while the girl thinks about the turns that the world takes. The Red Violin Method & Technique Book presents first position violin technique with intensive studies of music fundamentals. Exercises are simply explained throughout selected works of well-known composers. The book includes precise fingering, reading, and bowing skills; double stops, dotted notes, intervals, scales, and syncopation. The book also addresses dynamics (pianissimo, piano, forte, fortissimo, etc.), tempo (largo, lento, adagio, andante, moderato, etc.), and articulations (legato-slurs, accents, fermata, staccato, spiccato bowing). The right hand is thoroughly and sequentially developed through a series of bow techniques. Each bow technique defines a specific action required to produce an acceptable bow hand. The book uses a note-to-note sequence with finger's indication above and below the note heads. Accurate illustrations of the bow and fingerboard help develop proper playing position and mixing finger patterns. This technique creates better left-hand shape and helps develop proper playing position from the beginning. New material is carefully paced, sequential and immediately reinforced. New notes are approached by step, then gradually played with wider skips and crossing strings. Each new rhythm is introduced as a Rhythm Rap, which can be shadow bowed, then played on an open string, and finally placed in an appropriate melodic setting. Beside the selected melodies from well known composers, I composed many original melodies and exercises for this particular book.

The inspiration for my Missa Pro Defunctis (2018) was Fauré's Requiem in which he ignored the fire and brimstone text of the Dies irae and Tuba mirum in the Sequence of the Requiem Mass. And consequently he created a work that is peaceful, tranquil and uplifting. I'd like to think of death in that way.So, I proceeded by taking the exact text that Fauré used in his work, and instead of a large chorus and full orchestra I decided to do a chamber version. It is scored for SATB (single voices), flute, clarinet, string quartet, double bass and harp.The movements, as in the Fauré, are:1. Introit and Requiem2. Offertory3. Santus 4. Pie Jesu5. Agnus Dei6. Libera me7. In paradisumThe entire work has a duration of ca. 27 minutes.Missa Pro Defunctis (2018) is dedicated to the residents in the Protestant Cemetery in Rome.

Chi passa per ’sta stradaThe sixteenth-century Italian composer, Filippo Azzaiolo (1530-1569), published three books of villotas (secular songs). In the first of these, Primo libro de villotte alla padoana a quattro voci, the first song (also the most popular) was Chi passa per ’sta strada (He who passes down this street). An exquisite chord sequence provide the basis for a simple melody, together with a set of variations I composed.The left-hand part (quite odd really, as I don’t play any keyboard instrument, but I’m sure you know what I mean!) shows the chords as I would play them on an octave mandola or a bouzouki (both tuned GDAE, one octave below mandolin or violin), and the chord diagrams show my fingerings for these. Other accompanists can simply use the chords’ letter names, also included, and work out their own fingerings/voicings. However, I strongly recommend keeping accompaniment simple and percussive, accentuating the rhythm, allowing the mandolin or other lead instrument space in which to play those variations.
