A few years ago, I attended a concert by the National University of Singapore Symphony Orchestra, a group of passionate students, at the National University of Singapore. They performed Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique, which has continuously captivated me through the wild, grotesque sounds. Recently, my friend, Joshua suggested that I could write an orchestral transcription for Dream of a Witches’ Sabbath. I have decided to keep the instrumentation to a minimum, where smaller size bands can give it a try without the fear of not owning unusual auxiliary instruments, but still able to maintain the original orchestral sounds. The original program notes by Berlioz is as follows: He sees himself at a witches' sabbath, in the midst of a hideous gathering of shades, sorcerers and monsters of every kind who have come together for his funeral. Strange sounds, groans, outbursts of laughter; distant shouts which seem to be answered by more shouts. The beloved melody appears once more, but has now lost its noble and shy character; it is now no more than a vulgar dance tune, trivial and grotesque: it is she who is coming to the sabbath ... Roar of delight at her arrival ... She joins the diabolical orgy ... The funeral knell tolls, burlesque parody of the Dies irae, the dance of the witches. The dance of the witches combined with the Dies irae.

The Beltane celebrations on the Hill of Uisneach in Ireland and the Edinburgh Fire Festival are long-standing and beloved. These days, Beltane has been embraced by modern witches and mystics as a celebration of the energies of Spring. You can probably find a Spring festival with a maypole and a bonfire near you. Witches celebrate Beltane on May 1st as the height of Spring. They give thanks for the fertility of our planet and the ability of the Earth to renew herself. They revel in the new growth and general fecundity of the season. As co-creators with the Universe, witches also like to tap into the energy of Spring to help them bring new life into their own endeavours.They have a maypole and a bonfire. They celebrate the sexual union of Mother Earth and Green Man. The maypole is a symbol of masculine energy which is then joyfully embraced by colourful ribbons, symbolic of the beautiful abundance and diversity of our living world.Beltane is a pagan Celtic festval, but as is their wont, the Roman Catholic Church has modified it: into May Day, with participation of priests. Even the maypole upset many Christians.The sections of the piece are: Introduction to the witches theme, Witches fly in, Witches dance round the bonfire, Maypole dance, Witches inspect the finished maypole and disperse.The witches have a ground bass. I hint at their suspected spiritual allegiance to the Devil by including an occasional diabolus in musica.The Maypole Dance tune is English seventeenth C traditional.DURATION: 4 minutes.INSTRUMENTATION: String Quartet.

The Witches’ Sabbath is the fifth and final movement tells the story of the author himself amongst a hideous gathering of sorcerers, monsters and witches who have come together for his funeral. The original melody from the first movement is now a vulgar and grotesque dance. Berlioz also combines the Dies irae melody to strike even more fear into the listener. This arrangement of about 10 minutes in length by Randall Malmstrom is a full transcription of the movement and is appropriate for advanced performers.

He is best remembered for his operas Der Vampyr, Hans Heiling, and Der Templer und die Jüdin. Marschner’s early career was a patchwork of short engagements. He achieved more stability in 1830 when he was appointed Hofkapellmeister at the court of Hanover, a position he held until his retirement in 1859. In addition to opera, he is known for his songs, chamber music, and choral music, especially his works for men’s choir. Der Vampyr premiered in Leipzig in 1828. The Chorus of Witches and Spirits is the opening chorus of the opera. It creates a dramatic sense of foreboding as dark forces gather to celebrate the Witches’ Sabbath and summon the Vampire King. The flutist, composer and professor of music Theophilus Bucher had a settled and successful life after his immigration to England, where he is reported as newly arrived in 1831. We are lucky to have a monument at his grave in Edinburgh (in the Dean Cemetery) which gives both his date and place of birth, as well as the date and place of his demise. Theophile Bucher was born at Schlestadt, Alsace, on March 13, 1802, and died at Edinburgh, December 20, 1871. The obituary published in Signale für die Musikalische Welt, in March 1872, which states he came from Naples, from French parents. That obituary, although in German, gives his name in the French form of Theophile Boucher, the only source which gives this spelling for his surname. Certainly, his early successes and earliest publications seem to be in Naples, although he is reported in other parts of Italy as well.
