Contrasting textures throughout the piece with solos for tenor sax and piano (although any instrument works). A kickin’ out section. Lead trumpet up to D6 (written).

By Mike Strand, ASCAPThis is the full score, plus scores for three groups of parts, for a full arrangement of a swing tune for piano, bass, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, and two singers. After the cover, there are 21 pages of music: Ten pages for the full score; four pages for the group of blowing instruments (alto saxophone, B flat trumpet, and trombone); four pages for the piano and bass; and three pages for the two singers. Grouping the parts in this manner is natural and advantageous for this particular swing composition. These part groupings will help players in a group coordinate with each other from their group score. This is an excellent compromise between everyone working from the full score, and each player having a score with just the player’s individual part. The audio sample plays the full score.This product solves a problem that any composer of new jazz music faces: Unlike the popular standards, there aren’t any well-known and often-heard arrangements for a band to emulate. As the composer with only a lead sheet, I would have to convince your band to develop an arrangement from scratch, starting from nothing but the lead sheet! With so many attractive standard swing tunes to perform, a busy band may hesitate to put extra effort into an unknown tune. Problem solved! With this full arrangement of They Came Here to Dance, a band can better see and hear the tune’s full potential. It will be easier for a band to make any modifications to suit its particular mix of musicians and to better fit its style. With this arrangement, with written score, part group scores and audio sample, it will be as easy as working from the recording and score of a popular standard. All that’s missing from this arrangement is the percussion, because of the individuality of drummers. The band only needs a skilled jazz drummer to join in easily with this arrangement. Well, that’s all good, but here’s what I think: They came here to dance! 2. We cats up front have to check our sound mix. Then they walk in, togged to the bricks. When my friend Werner told me to listen to Smooth Operator, I thought he meant the well-known mid-80s smooth jazz number by the British band Sade. Instead, I got a surprise. This Smooth Operator was totally different, totally unknown to me, and provoked me to find out about Dorothy Dandridge and her life. I encourage you to do so too.The album Smooth Operator was released in 1999. However, Dorothy Dandridge had recorded this song nearly 40 years earlier, in February 1961, with – according to the sleeve notes from Verve Records – an unknown orchestra and unknown producer. The arranger of the band charts is also not credited. It seems there was just one take, because when Ms. Dandridge enters at the pickup to measure 5, it takes the rhythm section a few beats to fall into line with her; one trumpet also enters too early in measure 74! Notwithstanding, this is an amazing, very cool number, and if your female vocalist feels up to the challenge of these cheeky, risqué lyrics, then these easy charts will enable your big band to recreate the piece.Although the style is dated and recalls a bygone era, I feel this song is a good way to remember this brilliant actress, singer, and dancer who died so young, and draw attention to the injustices she suffered and which are still with us today. The tagline to the film of her life starring Halle Berry sums up her life: Right woman. Right place. Wrong time.

Tannenbaum, Replanted is a complete reworking of the very popular Weihnachtslied O Tannenbaum, which will even be familiar to many people from non-German-speaking countries. However, this is not an arrangement for purists, as the well-known melody in 3/4 time is presented here in a reharmonized up-tempo 4/4 time. The piece starts with a gently driving Latin-style groove and transforms to a Swing middle section, returning to the Latin groove at the end. I’ve not used a standard Latin beat here, instead a groove based loosely on the bossa nova. All the accompanying motifs in the saxes, trumpets, and trombones are drawn from the original melody.The Outro requires your lead alto and tenor saxophone players to improvise, alternating every two measures. I’ve left it up to the players to decide who starts first. Likewise, one or both players can improvise over the final chord.The flute part is optional, but does add a very distinctive sound over the top of the band, particularly in the quieter passages.

The song is based on Paul Keating's 1993 eulogy at the interment of the Unknown Soldier, one of Australia's most iconic speeches. Kernaghan said the song was inspired by Keating's immortal words, He is all of them. And he is one of us. This particular arrangement was premiered at a special concert commemorating that centenary of Armistice Day on 11 November 2018. The band accompaniment is fairly straight forward and not too demanding of the players. It's like a major diminished scale, or minor whole tone... the construction is whole-step, half-step transposed by major thirds.Despite its unusual construction, it has a familiar sound; its intervalic structure became widely used throughout the 20th Century, notably in the work of Herbie Hancock and others on the vanguard of progressive harmony.

Written in 2022 and revised in 2023, Stygio was the first composition I had written for an ensemble. Like the Stygiomedusa, composing this piece was a rare, mystical, exciting experience as a young artist. The tune has a funk groove with swung sixteenths, and has been considered a standard for its form and chord progressions. The piece begins with a clear melody, shifts to a chorale featuring the melody of my alma mater at Christopher Newport University, then ends in a layered lava-lamp-esque collection of colors. Stygio offers improvisatory exploration and complex chord qualities over simple rhythms and an easy, pocketed feel.
