Fantasy for Trombone was written in 1981 as a Christmas present for Richard Raum while he and Elizabeth Raum were performing with the Regina Symphony. Ms. Raum is a highly respected Canadian composer with a catalog of outstanding compositions, many featuring brass instrument solos. Fantasy for Trombone and Brass Band was arranged by Dorothy Gates in 2007.
The beautiful performance is by UK Trombonist Nick Hudson.

Diversions is a work by Canadian composer Elizabeth Raum for Trombone quartet written in 1998 for the Aurora Trombone Quartet. Elizabeth Raum's writing is influenced by the school of the tone poem in that her music seems often to tell a story.
Diversions consists of several sections, each with its own personality. It opens with a signal call from the first trombone that is answered in turn by each of the others. This leads to the first rather contrapuntal theme combining the Baroque with the Romantic; then a bridge consisting of variations on the signal brings us to the second theme of three muted trombones playing a lively dance-like accompaniment to the open sound of the first trombone. The continuity of the dance is interrupted by occasional asides or "diversions."
Finally, all four instruments, unmuted, join together bringing the piece to a rousing finish. This work of about 6 1/2 minutes in length is appropriate for advanced performers.

Rome's Pantheon, based on Greek mythical legends was first constructed over 2,000 years ago as a temple of all the gods. In the year 609, it became a Catholic church.Pantheon for Violin, Horn, and Piano by the great Canadian composer Elizabeth Raum is a seven-movement suite of chamber music depicting various of the Greek gods:1. Eos: Goddess of the Dawn2. Moirae: Gods of Fate3. Aphrodite: Goddess of Love and Beauty4. Zeus and Hera5. Artemis (Diana) Goddess of the Moon and the Hunt6. Hermes (Mercury) of the Winged Sandals7. Apollo: God of Sun and LightHere are the comments about Pantheon from composer Elizabeth Raum:Pantheon alludes to a temple, a musical temple in this case, devoted to the gods of ancient Greek mythology, several of whom are represented in this work. The first movement opens with a horn call as Eos, Goddess of the Dawn begins her rosy-fingered awakening, and rising from her couch, ascends the heavens in her horse-drawn chariot. She heralds the approach of her brother, Helius, the sun god, whose superior brightness causes her color to fade. In the second movement, The Fates (Moirae) spin their thread of life and death. The minimalist quality of the music, representing the steady turn of the spindle, becomes more and more agitated as Atropos, the Fate who holds the shears, prepares to cut the thread. The hand stopped horn and the Bartok pizzicato signify the final snip. A moment of contemplation, and they begin again. Some try to persuade Atropos to delay a moment, but she cannot be deterred. Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, is the third movement. She arose from the foam of the sea and all were charmed by her grace, but she could also be coy and flirtatious as she is in this version. Zeus and Hera, the king and queen of the gods, make up the fourth movement. The opening theme suggests the regal stride of Zeus while Hera, furious at his many infidelities, quarrels with him and schemes to thwart his affairs. In the fifth movement, Artemis (Dawn Goddess of the Moon and the Hunt), holds high her silver bow that gleams in the night sky like the new moon. The clouds drift silently past while she runs with her hounds and dances with her nymphs. Hermes (Mercury) of the Winged Sandals, sixth movement, is scored for violin and horn alone. He is a very mischievous and cunning god, and his exceptional swiftness is aided by his winged sandals as he flies to carry out his divine duties. And finally in the seventh movement, Apollo the horn again summons the gods. A hymn to Apollo celebrates the god of eternal youth, beauty, and music. This is a major chamber work for Violin, Horn, and Piano of about 26 minutes in length written for Erika Raum, Phil Myers, and Peter Allen and is appropriate for very advanced artists.

Since graduating from the Eastman School of Music she has performed with the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra in Halifax and for many seasons was Oboist and English Horn soloist with the Regina Symphony. She now resides in Toronto where she devotes much of her time to composition. Quintet for Trombones was written for the well-know Trombone ensemble, I Tromboni when they were one of the featured ensembles in the 2007 Colours of Music Festival in Barrie, Ontario when Ms. Raum was the Composer in Residence. The work is about 4 minutes in length and has a Toccata- like style, in that the ensemble is passing around the main melody throughout the entire work, keeping the flow and energy constant. This fine work is suitable for advanced performers and all parts are in bass clef.

And finally finishing up with the Rondo, in a major key, light-hearted, canonic in places, with a feeling of the evolution of musical form.

This Fanfare is meant to commemorate the Centenary of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan with the events of the first 100 years being represented as echoes of fanfares. The piece begins with a clarion call from the brass, the fanfares of the present culminating in the Maestoso. Then the music becomes more distant, fanfares of the past played by woodwinds and muted brass. The transition brings us back to the present with the return to the full band’s salute to Saskatchewan’s Centennial.

Elizabeth has delivered several new compositions for low brass over the past several years. First for Tuba, followed by Euphonium and now Bass Trombone.<BR> The 1st movement is bold & expressive. The 2nd movement, titled, Romance for Nada is lyrical followed by the 3rd and final movement which is rhythmic & dramatic. This Concerto was commissioned by colleagues and friends in honor of Douglas Sparkes. Mr. Sparkes is Bass Trombonist of the Vancouver Symphony. This work is suitable for advanced performers & is about 12 minutes in length.Ms. Raum's concerto has become a major new addition to the Bass Trombone repertoire.

We try to influence what happens but usually, outside forces determine the direction of our lives. Sometimes it’s hard to distinguish between illusion and reality, and, in fact, often people much prefer illusion to reality. Mv. 1 - Illusion starts out with an obscure time signature and is constantly shifting tonalities so for a while, you aren’t quite sure where you are. Life is full of such deceptions.Mv. 2 - Fill the Wine Cup is a series of drinking songs with a lot of gayety and rollocking humour as the party gets more raucous, but eventually things get a little blurry and bombastic and the party winds down. The trombone, due to its ability to imitate drunken reeling with glissandos, is often cast in this role. M. 3 - Destiny seems to march on and on, with mankind hoping to control their future, but the implication is that fate is more powerful than one can control.M. 4 - The ultimate illusion: a Political Debate. The trombone starts out as the first candidate, and the alto sax is the other. The music is circus-like as befits many heated debates.Illusion was commissioned by Lucas Kaspar and JD Little. The unusual term, Witness Pixel, comes from a process used in a field of cosmology that is actually beyond the understanding of the composer but was explained by her son who works at Berkeley on telescopes that detect the origins of the universe.Witness pixels look at the coordination of all the layers of metal and ceramics working in concert to form the finished telescope detector.Elizabeth Raum was taken with the imagery this term conjured up and thought it fit the whimsical nature of the piece in addition to the comparison to a group of musicians, each with his own individual part, striving to work together with the other layers.This unique work of 4 minutes in length for 6 Trombones is written for advanced-intermediate performers with all parts in bass clef and range and endurance being moderate.

Here is a brief description of this very fine new work, The Secret of Ben Søgen for Bass Trombone and Piano by the composer, Elizabeth Raum: I’ve always been fascinated by the Nordic heroes that appear in comic books and video games like Thor or Odin. Years ago, I wrote a concerto for tuba called The Legend of Heimdall inspired by Scandinavian folklore, and for this new work for bass trombone, I found myself drawn to the Danish mythical character, Ben Søgen. My concept was to conjure up a video game champion who goes through various adventures to achieve his final quest. However, the Secret of Ben Søgen is that he doesn’t exist. I made him up. My original title was Bone Quest, a pun on the word, trombone, combined with Quest but that didn’t evoke the image I wanted so I decided to create a character from the Danish translation of Bone Quest. Thus Ben Søgen. The Hero Bass Trombonist has a theme stated in the beginning, and this motif continues through a variety of backgrounds (or adventures) before the final major key of his goal being achieved. The work is about 7 minutes in length and appropriate for advanced performers. This work has been edited for bass trombone by Gordon Cherry.

Prelude and Fughetta for Trombone Trio by Elizabeth Raum is an accessible work for advanced intermediate performers. The two sections are all in bass clef, plus technique, range and endurance are kept to a moderate level.Prelude is a beautiful lyrical chorale marked religioso that weaves its way through various tonal centers, but returns home to C major. Fughetta as it sounds is contrapuntal in nature flipping itself around after first being stated by each performer.Altogether the work is a delightful addition to the repertoire for lesser experienced players.
