She composed pieces for piano, concertos, quartets, and was known for her scientific studies on the hand techniques of the Piano.Her cello concerto in F major, dedicated to Jules Delsart, is a rather unknown gem to the cello community. While arrangements of her manuscript for Cello and Orchestra have been performed, her personal arrangment of the concerto for Cello and Piano is not as well-known. Following the manuscript from the Bibliothèque nationale et universitaire of Strasbourg (BNU), this edition features a similar 1st and 3rd movement, with a novel 2nd movement in a similar style as compared to her orchestra version. The four sonatas in this volume are a tantalising introduction to Artaria Editions' forthcoming publication of the complete keyboard sonatas of Domenico Cimarosa. (Sonata R20, R30, R25 and R27) The present edition attempts to present as accurately as possible the composer's intentions as transmitted in the Florentine MS with the exception of the grouping of the works into multi-movement cycles. Cimarosa's scant markings have been preserved throughout and, on occasion, applied to parallel passages. As in the original, the editor has placed the onus of responsibility for interpretation back on the performer although he has made occasional tempo suggestions where they are missing from the source. Obvious wrong notes have been corrected without comment; editorial emendations with no authority from the source are placed within brackets. Nick Rossi Sadly Nick Rossi died before this edition went to press. In the course of its preparation we discussed many issues relating to the genesis of the sonatas and the risk the editor takes in presenting the works to the public with so little help in the matter of interpretation. In the absence of both the autograph score and an authentic set of parts, this edition presents as faithfully as possible the intentions of the composer as transmitted in the source. As is often the case in Hofmann's chamber music there are very few dynamic markings; these are left to the discretion and good taste of the performer. The style and notation of articulation and dynamic markings have been standardised throughout, and, where missing from the source, markings have been reconstructed from parallel passages. These are indicated by the use of dotted slurs or brackets. Like most eighteenth-century sources, the present manuscript is inconsistent at times in its notation of appoggiature ; these too have been standardised to minimise confusion. Artaria Editions AE198For flute, violin, cello, harpsichord, and basso (usually a second cello)The present work was advertised by Breitkopf (Supplement IV) in 1769 along with two of the composer's keyboard concerti.Most of Hofmann's keyboard music appears to date from his years as Hofklaviermeister (1769-1774) and we can assume that a good deal of it was intended as teaching material. In the circumstances it is tempting to suggest that this attractive and unusually-scored work was composed for Hofmann's imperial pupils and that Joseph II perhaps played the cello part in a domestic concert at court. This edition is based on a set of MS parts now preserved in the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin under the shelfmark Mus.ms. 10733/3. The wrapper reads: 'A/ Concertino / a / Cembalo / Flauto Traverso / Violino / Violoncello / e / Basso / del Sigr. Leop: Hoffmann / Grave' . Artaria Editions AE387The London premires of Opp.1 and 2 probably took place at William Napier's morning concerts held at the Thatched House Tavern in St. James's Street. The performers at this venue were gentlemen amateurs backed with some professional assistance (possibly including Shield) and the audience consisted largely of nobility (but not ladies) on their way to court. Napier's concerts were more than a vehicle for airing newly published works or composers, and when it was proposed to revive the series in 1792, the Morning Chronicle of 28 January recalled that they had served to improve the taste and science of the amateur as well as introducing professional merit to the highest patronage. Shield's duets, expressly written with talented amateurs in mind (according to the title-page of Op.2), exactly suited the repertoire of the morning concerts.Both sets of duets are neatly engineered with a violinist's grasp of technique and articultion, and with each part sharing in the musical interest. The prevailing spirit of Op. 1 is Italianate and there are many attractive details to be heard. The amoroso movement of No.1, for example, with its ardent episodes and the hunting rondo of No.2 which begins with the representation of distant horn calls and later depicts a chromatically wounded prey. If the opening of No. 3 gives the impression of an exotic dance, including the audible thrum of a guitar or harp, then the rondo of No.4 can be imagined as a spring song animated with birds and breezes. The opening of No.5 is as propulsive as a theatre overture whilst No.6, written for either violins or flutes, assumes a suitably fluty tone. Op.2 is an altogether more compact set which sharpens the focus on elements already noticed in Op.1. Shield employs a variety of forms including minuet, variations, rondo and canon; and he also adopts vocal styles including lyric song (for the affettuoso movement of No.1) and arioso (for the opening adagio of No.2). The first movement of No. 3 sounds like a mini stage overture whilst the adagio of No. 5 can be heard as a melting duet. Both movements of No. 4 adhere to folk style, incorporating hurdygurdy like figurations and simulated versions of the northern pipe-tunes which Shield himself so avidly collected. This edition presents as faithfully as possible the intentions of Napier's source. Published by Artaria Editions (A0.1488235). Artaria Editions AE379 The flute writing in Wanhal's quartets is a good deal less virtuosic than the solo writing found in Hofmann's quartets. The principal reason for this lies in the greater equality of part-writing and in this respect Wanhal's quartets are more modern and technically advanced than those of Hofmann. One prime example of this can be seen in Wanhal's adoption of the modern alla breve notation in first movements in preference to the fussy eight-in-a-bar favoured by Hofmann and others. There is also a greater emphasis on the development of thematic material although not to the same extent or intensity that one encounters in the composer's symphonies. In keeping with the conventional practice of the period the flute quartets were conceived to be played with a variety of possible instruments on the top part. The London publisher Welcker, for example, issued the Op. 7 set with the title page Six Quartettes for a / Hautboy or German Flute whereas Sieber styled them Six Quartetto Concertante / Pour une Flute au Hautbois. Copies of several works from the set are preserved in manuscript as string quartets and at least one work as a clarinet quartet. There is good reason to believe that the six flute quartets under consideration were conceived as a set and probably intended for immediate publication. They first appeared under Huberty's imprint in 1771 (as Op.8) and may have been composed reasonably close to the publication date. Whether Wanhal sent the works direct to Huberty is uncertain. Artaria Editions AE427Shield's Trios, written for a continental audience, are seminal works in the composer's output and mark a new level of compositional attainment in the English chamber music repertory. Technically, they contain a wide variety of ideas which are developed with great ingenuity through a wide range of keys, dynamic contrasts and timbral effects. Aesthetically, they blend 'popular' and 'learned' taste along with 'orchestral' splendour and 18th century notions of beauty. The Trios present a dazzling range of moods and style with each work demonstrating Shield's mastery of the idiom, both in his treatment of individual instruments and in the handling of textures. While there is no shortage of melody and accompaniment, in which the violin takes the lead, there are many memorable solos for the viola and the cello in its high register. The wide range of textures includes melodic decoration, dialogue, contrast of high and low register, legato and staccato, powerful unison and double octaves. Shield's ability to incorporate arioso-like melody, the prevailing 'symphonic' style and folk elements was largely achieved through the cross-generic requirements of English comic opera (a form to which Shield devoted himself during the whole of his creative career). In general, Shield's technique results in a firm control of the way music moves - with sometimes a surprising degree of stylistic restlessness and sometimes of unexpected plainness and simplicity. Shield's three previously unpublished string trios are preserved in autograph score in the British Library under the call number Ms.Add.51015; they provide the only source for this edition. This present edition presents as faithfully as possible the intentions of these sources. The style and notation of articulation and dynamic markings have been standardised throughout and, where missing, markings have been reconstructed from parallel passages. The notation of appoggiature has also been standardised to minimise confusion.
