The song uses the hymn tune Kingsfold and the lyrics are thought to have been written by Cathay MacGarvey in the late 1800s. Each part gets the melody for a verse and there is a fun diversion into 6/8 for the Tenor 1s in the 3rd verse. This score comes with options to play the instrumental line on C, Bb, or Eb instruments. The vocal parts are not too difficult but the instrumentalist will need to be moderately advanced, especially if they choose to take the optional ad lib verse instead of the written out solo, which is already rather towards the extreme of the instrument's range.

This lively Sea Shanty Medley is a combination of two different sea shanties, Fish in the Sea from Scotland and Santiana from the Americas.Fish in the Sea is quite simple but has dozens of verses. It takes the form of a chorus that is identical every time and a verse that describes various fish. The idea being that everyone would sing the chorus and each individual sailor would basically ad-lib new lyrics when it was their turn to sing a verse.Santiana actually tells the story of the Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna during the Mexican-American war in the 1840s. However, the various exploits described in the song have very little to do with historical reality. There are of course dozens of version of the song, each associated with different shipping lanes, and there are even a wide variety of shanties from other countries that seem to be adaptations of this tune with different stories.This arrangement by Mark Lewis is for 3 to 5 octave handbell choir and makes extensive use of both malleted and normal ringing techniques. There are some very quick transitions between the two techniques. The piece moves along at a pretty good clip with some portions in 6/8 and others in cut time with various duplet and triplet patterns to help with transitions, leading to a difficulty rating of 4+. While the piece should be playable by most intermediate groups, they will definitely need to put in enough practice time to perform it properly.Season: ConcertRange: 3-5 octaves.

You will need this arrangement if you want the Ode an die Freude to begin with a worthy introductionGreatly reduced version of the 3rd and 4th movements of the 9th symphony. The hymn Ode an die Freude can also be performed as a single movement. Heavy brass has been added as an ad libitum instrumentation, to allow the hymn to be performed with full orchestra on occasion.The 4-part chorus can be sung even by a non-professional choir, and even by the audience, because of a convenient tessitura in A major in the hymn. The reduction of elements used from the 3rd movement leads - as an introduction - to the first passage of the hymn, and with material from the 4th movement it leads to the closing hymn. The hymn shows the lyrics for 3 verses.It has been orchestrated and arranged with full respect for Beethoven's intentions, but with an open mind to the needs of contemporary events and the needs of concert organizations and audiences. One of a series of fourteen accompaniments to texts published between 1896 – 1899 'I Died for Beauty' was included in the posthumous collection 'Poems' by the American poet Emily Dickinson, published in 1890. Duration 3:00 approx.Two or more players or singers and narrator. Instruments in C and singers may read from the score. Parts are available for transposing instruments and viola. Play/hum in softest octave, instruments muted if possible and others sited away 'off-stage'. Each player starts and continues independently at their own slow tempo. All to have started by the time the first player reaches bar 9 (*) Each may choose any of the slur or paused note options ad lib. The narrator starts reading either before or after the players/singers have started and may leave substantial gaps between the verses. It is also acceptable for the narrator to end after the players/singers have finished playing. Old English.The first known canon of European art music, now in the British Museum in London, is preserved in a thirteenth-century manusript from the English abbey in Reading: This is the so-called summer canon, whose verses greet the advent of summer. An accompanying note elucidates the artistic layer-like construction of the sound structure: a two-voice foundation of bell-like, swinging pendulum tones supports an upper structure of four voices which enter at equal time intervals. The note terms the canon rota - round -, which makes reference to the turning, circling movement of the constantly pulsating sound. The circular figure originates in a vital, ages-old moving force in music-making, and it demands a dance-like execution. But the canon is also, through the interaction of the strictly ordered voice entries, convivially bound musical form. Carl Orff was able to choose no better fitting musical form for the Greetings to Youth at the Olympic Games 1972 in Munich than the medieval rota.
