It was in the process of preparing the publication of the works of Demersseman and of Ali Ben Sou Alle that suggested to me the idea of the typical 19th century practice of the Fantasy and Variations on well-known themes.The saxophone lends itself perfectly for this stylistic exercise. I therefore chose to write for this instrument, which the piano supports seriously.My republican roots (in the French sense) suggested that I set several revolutionary songs from 1789. I therefore chose the emblematic “ Ah ça ira ! â€, after having seen the famous sequence of “Si Versailles l’était conté†where Piaf sings this song hanging of the grill of the Palace of Versailles, in the superbe version by Jean Françaix.I added at the end “ La Carmagnole †and the famous “ Il pleut bergère †a foreshadowing of the destiny of Marie-Antoinette who is said to have enjoyed singing this air. One will find, a bit hidden, a short citation of a work for organ by Bach.This isn’t a pastiche but rather a sort of modern update to this form in respecting its codes, its forms of this type of work which disappeared temporarily due to forced musical austerity.

Score: 5 pg Part: 2 pg, piano part: 3 pg.Cantique de Noël The French composer Adolphe Adam was already famous as a composer of many successful ballets and operas. Then, in the 1840’s he wrote his most famous work - O Holy Night. The original song title was Minuit Chretiens or Cantique de Noël. Placide Cappeau provided the original song lyrics. The song was first performed in Roquemaure by the opera singer Emily Laurey at midnight mass in 1847. It became very popular among the French, much the way that Silent Night was famous elsewhere. In the 1850’s John S. Dwight, a Unitarian minister and music teacher translated the song into English. Adolphe Adam In his younger years, Adam studied organ and composition at the Paris Conservatoire. He also played the timpani in the Conservatoire orchestra. Adam used his savings and borrowed money to open a new opera house - the fourth opera house in Paris in 1847. Unfortunately, the Revolution of 1848 forced him to close. He taught composition at the Paris Conservatoire from 1849 until his death in 1856. Placide Cappeau The poet Cappeau was an advocate of the French Enlightenment philosopher Voltaire. Voltaire was renowned for criticizing the Catholic church, religious intolerance, and dogma in general. Consequently, Cappeau made the Redeemer figure in his song a kind of reformer of injustices, in particular, the problem of original sin. To begin with, people recognized Cappeau’s theology as eccentric, probably even doubtful. Theology In the earlier form of Minuit, the Christ figure descends to intervene with His Father’s plan to punish mankind. Traditional doctrine pronounces that Christ came from love, not to intervene. This version also declares that Christ appeared to expunge the original sin of Adam. Cappeau removed this part from him poem years later, because he just didn’t believe it. He preferred to portray Christ as the reformer of disparity and unfairness. Before long, the writer/politician Alphonse de Lamartine referred to the Minuit as the the Marseillaise of religion. Ave Maria (Bach/Gounod) (1853) Charles Gounod (1818 - 1893) Any Saxophone Solo and Piano Ave Maria (Bach/Gounod) by Charles Gounod (after J. S. Bach) (based on music of J. S. Bach) arranged for Any Saxophone Solo and Piano. B-flat and E-flat solo sax parts are included. This arrangment is in the key of C major, as was the 1853 original version. Tempo is around 78 bpm. The solo part is an exercise in expressive legato playing. Some rubato may be added in the last few bars of the music. The Bach/Gounod Ave Maria is a popular and much-recorded setting of the Latin prayer Ave Maria. It was first published in 1853 as “Méditation sur le Premier Prélude de Piano de S. Bach“. Gounod improvised an original melody that he paired with a slightly changed version of a familiar Bach Prelude (Prelude No. 1 in C major, BWV 846, Book I of The Well-Tempered Clavier). The 1853 publication is an instrumental piece. There was no text. Gounod reworked the piece in 1859, finally settling on the Latin prayer “Ave Maria” as lyrics. The new version proved to be an irresistible force. It attracted a phenomenal level of acclaim, becoming immensely popular, even improving Gounod’s faltering reputation with the contemporary public. It is a standard at holiday times, weddings, quinceañeras, church services, and other solemn occasions.
