The second movement of Blaze's Piano Sonata in E Major No. 1, following A Look Into The Past, A Moment In The Present was primarily inspired by Beethoven’s Piano Sonata in F Minor No. 1 and Piano Sonata in C Minor No. 8 “Pathetiqueâ€. I gave it its name because I find it to be a very relaxing and dawdling piece. It reminds me of someone just lounging around and enjoying nothing but taking in the moment. The syncopated melody gives off the feeling that his thoughts are also jumbled together. He is not actively trying to achieve anything, but instead just letting anything come to him. It is supposed to contrast the first movement by being simpler and more relaxing (where the first is dominating and complex). I especially wanted a much more lyrical and monophonic (single voiced) piece to contrast with the polyphony (many voiced) and layers of the first.

After studying the scores of Beethoven’s first five piano sonatas to gain an understanding of how they work, I have put together my own original piano sonata. It consists of some admiration of the past in the first theme, energy and determination to do something about it in the second theme, and some interesting experimentation and action in the development.

I got the idea for the piece after having composed for 2 hours and finding my stomach screaming from hunger, my throat screaming from thirst, my head screaming from fatigue, and my mind screaming from unsatisfied work. It was a very overwhelming feeling at once and caused me to come up with the idea for the piece and subject for the fugue. The prelude is supposed to be setting up the fugue, as it depicts multiple voices getting along but just barely. The C major section shows the initial clarity from satisfying one of their needs, but it quickly returns to a struggle. The fugue slowly and slowly gets more intense, leading up until the end when the main character becomes completely overwhelmed.

This charming, thought-provoking chamber opera is set during the Second World War, and tells the story of Stanislaw Hempel, a Polish chemist and revolutionary socialist, who came to Scotland in 1943 attached to the Polish Armed Forces in the West. The opera was commissioned by the University of Edinburgh School of Chemistry to celebrate its Tercentenary year in 2013. The other characters in the opera are Chrissie Miller (a trailblazer for gender equality in the sciences) and James Kendall (an expert in chemical warfare). Published by Jeremy Graham Hart (A0.1102258). 18/04/’21: A Reflection is written as a tentative expression of the tumultuous emotions experienced by the composer, upon watching so many landmarks of their home be threatened or destroyed by the fire which ravaged Table Mountain on the 18th and 19th of April 2021. The most impactful symbol of this tragedy is, for the composer, the heart-rending body of images showing the Jagger Reading Room ablaze. The score expresses the composer’s experiences in a collage, drawing from C. Debussy’s La Cathedral Engloutie and W. A. Mozart’s Requiem in evocation of the emotions surrounding the burning library, and enacts them in a three-part narrative. The opening is articulated as a collection of sporadic outbursts heard against a slower melody and a rising bell motif. This is an evocation of the shifting uncertainty of the early hours of the fire shortly after it had consumed the Rhodes Memorial Restaurant. This slowly becomes the evocation of horror and dismay that characterises the second section, as the fire takes hold of Mostert’s Mill, various parts of the University of Cape Town forcing students into a full evacuation of their residences, and eventually the Jagger Reading Room. The finality of the second section’s ending is followed by the muted resignation and mourning of the third and final section. The slowed melody from the first section returns, without the frenetic outbursts. All the listener is left with is the certainty of what has happened. The melody tries to rise to triumph, as the fire is held back from any further destruction, but ultimately falls back down and limps its way to an unsatisfactory and inconclusive closing statement.

Blaze was written by Jim Fieldhouse as a personal composition challenge during the coronavirus lockdown of 2020. The piece came about from a desire to contribute to the contemporary euphonium repertoire and a need for some material for the composer to practice while the UK's brass bands were on pause due to Covid-19. This piece means business! It starts with a bang and is definitely not for the faint hearted. Much of the material centres around repeated semiquavers and requires razor sharp precision to bring it off the page. The relentless melodic lines are laid over funk influenced grooves and driving bass riffs.
