I was very taken by Ferruccio Busoni’s transcription of J.S. Bach’s Chorale Preludes for organ. I am not familiar with the original version mainly because I don’t enjoy listening to organ music; except when it is in a jazz context, like Jimmy Smith and Joey DeFrancesco.Using Busoni’s version as a model I re-did all nine of his Bach Chorale Preludes in my fashion and then I realized that I needed three more to make a nice simple dozen. So I looked at Max Reger’s transcriptions of the Bach Chorale Preludes and found three that would fit into my twelve-movement work.I. Andante … Komm, Gott Schöpfer, heiliger GeistII. Wikipedia entry on Ferruccio Busoni's Elegies (German: Elegien): The Elegies mark a significant change in Busoni's compositional approach.  The harmonic language of the Elegies is extended, with the pedal used audaciously to blend disparate tones: unrelated triads are overlapped and juxtaposed; chords are constructed from intervals other than thirds; unusual and highly chromatic scales and runs, often differing from the surrounding harmonies, are extensively employed and varied; melodies, and solitary sighs, moving by whole and half steps, magnify these disorienting effects.Busoni recognized the change: My entire personal vision I put down at last and for the first time in the Elegies, and the Elegies signify a milestone in my development.  Almost a transformation ...  Inspired by his work, I gave myself a challenge to write my own version of Elegien.  Like the Busoni, it is in seven movements for solo piano.1. (very calm), (about 60bpm)Difficulty: Advanced intermediateÉmile-Robert Blanchet (abbrv E. R. Blanchet) (1877-1943). Swiss pianist and composer. After early studies with his father, the organist Charles Blanchet (1833–1900), and then with his mother, Marie Schnyder, an excellent pianist, Blanchet attended the Cologne Conservatory from the age of 18, where his teachers included Gustave Jensen for harmony and counterpoint, Friedrich Wilhelm Frankel and Seiss. In 1898 he left Cologne for Berlin, and subsequently Weimar, to study with Busoni, whose influence was to prove pivotal to Blanchet's future development. At 25 he made his début with the Berlin PO, after which he appeared throughout Germany and elsewhere, including a tour of Switzerland as accompanist to the violinist Henri Gerber. In 1905 he became director of the Lausanne Conservatoire, a position he relinquished in 1908 in order to concentrate more on teaching and composition. In 1909 he was awarded first prize for his Tema con variazioni for piano op.13 in a competition in Berlin. As a pianist, Blanchet's virtuoso technique was well suited to his chosen repertory, which was based primarily on the works of Beethoven, Liszt, Brahms and especially Chopin, in addition to those of Debussy, Ravel and Louis Vierne. His playing was particularly admired for its power and control and for the variety of colour and nuance he was able to achieve through a subtle pedal technique.

Borne was a flutist with the principal opera company in Bordeaux as well as a composer and professor at the conservatory in Toulouse. Expert in both instrumental technique and in the development of the flute as an instrument, he is still recognized for his technical contributions to the Böhm flute. His Fantasie Brillante on Themes from Bizet’s Carmen is by far his most famous composition. Borne’s setting of Carmen’s luscious melodies – like those by Sarasate for the violin, and by Busoni and Horowitz for the piano – combine the virtuoso’s understanding of the solo instrument with a flair for the dance rhythms and passionate colors of the opera. Borne fills his setting with spectacular arpeggios that require fleet fingering and consummate breath control. Carmen’s brilliant Habanera, a traditional dance that she performs with castanets (and with abundant flirting), anchors the work. But the mood of Borne’s Carmen is far brighter than that of the fatalistic Gypsy girl of Bizet’s opera. In Borne’s showpiece, a set of brilliant variations on her showy Habanera leads to a triumphant close – in marked contrast with the opera’s violent, tragic ending. In this version, the composition was arranged for Solo Flute and Concert Band by Harry Walker.
