These are “picture pieces,” intended to be studies in musical composition focused on a variety of themes. Each etude explores a distinct scene left to the listener’s interpretation. Op. 33 No. 4, Moderato – This march begins and ends with an open fifth echo-like motif. As the movement progresses, it gains more textural and harmonic complexity. Op. 39 No. 8, Allegro Moderato – This lyrical piece has long legato melodies, requiring precision and agility from the performer. Op. 39 No. 4, Allegro Assai – Filled with harmonic color and interweaved motives, this gavotte is pointed and energetic. Op 39 No. 7, Lento Lugubre – Slow and laborious, the funeral march is dense with emotion, ending with a glorious bell-like theme. The melody lines are somewhat uneven but feel natural as if they are being sung in the late hours of the night. Rising and falling passages in the background reflect the waves on these moonlit nights. This piece was originally commissioned by a wonderful colleague of mine Tim Chernobrov. He wanted something that would capture the unique sound of the low harmony clarinets. The text is translated from Heinrich Heine’s poem of the same name. Originally sketched a few years back, it has been reworked and polished, giving the text a beautifully rich setting. The beginning is mysterious and misty like the evening twilight before the wind picks up as the piano swells with huge sweeping arpeggios. The calm returns as all sounds fade into the mist. Instrumentation Soprano Piano Soprano may be substituted with other voice parts, although the range is written best for soprano and tenor.

Https://www.michaelbarreraflute.com/shop/p/first-suite-eb-flute Program Notes First Suite in E-flat by Gustav Holst is widely considered one of the masterworks of band literature and it is one of the earliest pieces written for wind ensemble. Completed in 1909, the suite did not premiere until 11 years later in 1920. Each of the three movements Chaconne, Intermezzo, and March is based on the same motif, seen at the beginning of each movement. The Chaconne begins with a ground bass stating the theme and follows with a set of 15 variations over it. The Intermezzo is brisk, making use of the agility of the winds. Last, the March is more lighthearted but then becomes more regal like a typical British march. Instrumentation 1 Piccolo 4 Flutes 1 Alto Flute 1 Bass Flute Parts may be doubled with more players as desired.

It has a repeating passacaglia-like bass line that gradually builds and then releases when the waves hit the shore. The piano creates the image of rolling waves washing onto a beachfront while the other instruments act as the mist on the water. It invokes feelings of being lost at sea and drifting along the waves in the ocean far from shore. The melody lines are somewhat uneven but feel natural as if they are being sung in the late hours of the night. Rising and falling passages in the background reflect the waves on these moonlit nights. This piece was commissioned by a wonderful colleague of mine Tim Chernobrov. He wanted something that would capture the unique sound of the low harmony clarinets and make them shine in their own light. In doing so, he hopes to spark more interest in these less common clarinets. Instrumentation Low clarinet quartet consisting of - Alto Clarinet Bass Clarinet Contra Alto Clarinet Contrabass Clarinet.

It takes the form of a rondo, a series of returning themes, which mimics the spinning nature of its namesake. The music itself often lifts into the air and glides back to the main theme. This is a complete rework of the very first piece I wrote, by the name of Fire Tornado. Most of the main ideas survived, but now they are much more colorful and developed. Originally conceived with the imagery of mechanics and machinery in mind, it quickly became a piece more interested in the fleeting motion of wind. It is both carefree and energetic, like floating leaves in the spring air. This piece was commissioned by Shooting Star Ocarina, an international virtual ocarina ensemble established in the summer of 2020. Following the traditional instrumentation of the Italian ocarina septet, SSO recently expanded to an octet adding the massive contrabass in G ocarina to the ensemble and commissioned a few pieces as a result to feature this addition to the low range. This prelude was included as number 5 in his Opus 23, a set of ten preludes for solo piano. Rachmaninoff himself premiered this prelude in Moscow in 1903, along with Preludes 1 and 2 from this set. It begins with quiet yet decisive sixteenth note figures setting the mood for a minor march. Following this, the relative major Eb comes in full force expanding this sixteenth note figure with a descant-like melody. After a return to g minor, the energy of the opening march dissipates as a new lyrical melody takes the forefront, accompanied by sweeping arpeggios. This section is much melancholier than before. As this theme fades, the march returns slowly out of the mist that the previous section created. It builds to the return of the Eb major section that leads into a continuation of the march theme. This fades into a quick rising figure to finish the prelude. This arrangement captures both the energy of the march and the beauty of the lyrical middle section.
