The work has 3 short movements and is dedicated to Dr. Esteban Barquero, a conductor and dear friend from Costa Rica. The first movement “Bajo la lluvia†(Under the Rain) represents the juvenile experience of doing different activities under the rain like playing, running, and dancing. I have memorable memories of my childhood under the intense rain. The experience of being in the rain can be funny or stressful depending on your perspective. The music pretends to be ambiguous, presenting the theme in different tonal centers and moving between different intensities until fading in the rain.“Rocio†(Dew) is the second movement of the piece. The slow music pretends to evoke a relaxing morning in the countryside enjoying the view of the dew on the green plains. The delicacy of the piano in combination with the warmth of the strings will help to create a relaxing experience for the listener. This movement is like an oasis to the noise of our daily lives.The third movement “Tempestad†(Tempest) is based on a Salvadoran Traditional Rhythm called “Xuc†As an interesting fact, while I was composing this movement I learned that Costa Rica had a traditional rhythm that is very similar called “Tambito.†The movement is full of energy, portraying a Thunderstorm. This movement is very demanding for the performers, especially for the soloist. Composed between January and March 2003, the Suite for Piano was written for a recital by pianist Qi Liu (1976-2017), at Stony Brook University, in March of 2003.The opening of the first movement evokes bells, not unlike those in Rachmaninoff’s RusÂsian Easter (the finale of his First Suite for Two Pianos). This is contrasted with a short and murky rising gesture. The middle section incorporates pianistic patterns (some reminiscent of Debussy), a yearning IbeÂrian melody, and a barely-recognizÂable snippet of Chopin used for a climax. The murky gesture eventually returns, introducing a triumphant stateÂment of the opening bells.Early on, I had decided the piece should include references to the other pieces on the reÂcital’s program: Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 18 (op. 31, No. 3) and Brahms’s F minor SoÂnata (op. 5). As soon as I had word from Qi that she was going to play the Beethoven, I immediÂately wanted to hear it. I wasn’t familiar with the piece, and since I didn’t have a score or a reÂcording of it at home, I decided to download it in MIDI format from the internet. Unbeknownst to me, the computer’s rendition transformed the lively secÂond movement scherzo into a slow-moving hymn which reminded me of the Ode to Joy. I was quite surÂprised the next mornÂing when I went to the muÂsic library and listened to a reÂcording played by a human. Nonetheless, I was drawn to the melody, and I found the slow effect interesting, so I deÂcided to base my middle movement (the slow movement) around the theme of BeethoÂven’s scherzo, making it the hidÂden theme for a short set of variations. The end of the movement also contains less direct referÂences to the music of Brahms (very short alluÂsions to the Sonata and to the Variations on a Theme by Haydn).The last movement explores fast and light fingerwork, in a sort of toccata or capriccio, proÂviding a flashy ending to the piece. As in the first movement, the form is A-B-A. Before the return of the first section, a little dance evokes the opening of the piece. (The murky gesture from the first movement also finds its way into this last movement).Each of the three movements experiments at one point with using the sustain pedal in order to create a wash of sound. My Prelude on the hymn tune Terra Beata (This Is My Father's World) is intended for church pianists looking for interesting arrangements of hymns familiar to their congregations. It is one of two settings for piano of Terra Beata that I have written. In this setting there are two statements of the melody. The first places the melody in the soprano register with a repeated-note pattern serving as the accompaniment in the left hand. The second places the melody in the bass register moving at half the previous speed and accompanied by a downward moving arpeggiation pattern played by the right hand. The second half of the melody returns to the soprano, harmonized with 4-note chords, and accompanied by rapid downward moving scales played by the left hand. In the final phrase, the pace slows, leading inconclusively to a chord of the 13th on G-flat at mid-phrase, before resuming in the main key of E-flat and ending triumphantly with a repeated-note trumpet-like pattern. I have provided a full-length recording to aid the prospective buyer in the decision-making process. I encourage you to search the Sheet Music Plus or the Sheet Music Direct website for other hymn arrangements of mine, some for organ and others for piano.

Famously used in the 1967 film Elvira Madigan, hence the nickname, the Elvira Madigan concerto, Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21 was completed soon after his 20th in 1785. There are 5 different arrangements for solo piano, each getting progressively harder and trying not to compromise on sound where possible: Level 1: Just over a minute long, this is the easiest version. Both hands are very simple and are very close together, making it easier to see what all the fingers are doing at the same time. No jumps greater than a fifth and no large chords, making it perfect for smaller hands. Level 2: Two version provided: the first just over a minute long; the second the complete length of the movement, minus the orchestra introduction. Again, the melody has been simplified, though harder than level 1, with an increased coverage of the piano. The accompaniment is either static chords (now triads as standard) or broken arpeggios. It now has jumps in the right hand of just over an octave, with the left hand moving relatively little between chords/arpeggios. Level 3: This version has an optional cut, otherwise is the complete second movement, minus the orchestral introduction. Similar to level 2, only one hand tends to be changing pitches/rhythms at any one time, but the right hand is now almost the same as Mozart’s original (with some ornamentation removed or written out in full). The left hand now has the familiar broken-chord pattern (see opening bars) but in simple rather than compound time. On the whole, the left hand moves relatively little between chords, although there are now some larger jumps when the right hand is static. Level 4: Like level 3, but with the broken chord in compound time throughout. Some of the orchestral accompaniment has been integrated into the music, though simplified. Level 5: The hardest version, more difficult than the original solo piano part. Still no orchestral introduction. Includes more of the orchestral accompaniment than level 4. This, in essence, is a piano transcription of the full orchestration for piano and orchestral. Famously used in the 1967 film Elvira Madigan, hence the nickname, the Elvira Madigan concerto, Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 21 was completed soon after his 20th in 1785. There are 5 different arrangements for solo piano, each getting progressively harder and trying not to compromise on sound where possible: Level 1: Just over a minute long, this is the easiest version. Both hands are very simple and are very close together, making it easier to see what all the fingers are doing at the same time. No jumps greater than a fifth and no large chords, making it perfect for smaller hands. Level 2: Two version provided: the first just over a minute long; the second the complete length of the movement, minus the orchestra introduction. Again, the melody has been simplified, though harder than level 1, with an increased coverage of the piano. The accompaniment is either static chords (now triads as standard) or broken arpeggios. It now has jumps in the right hand of just over an octave, with the left hand moving relatively little between chords/arpeggios. Level 3: This version has an optional cut, otherwise is the complete second movement, minus the orchestral introduction. Similar to level 2, only one hand tends to be changing pitches/rhythms at any one time, but the right hand is now almost the same as Mozart’s original (with some ornamentation removed or written out in full). The left hand now has the familiar broken-chord pattern (see opening bars) but in simple rather than compound time. On the whole, the left hand moves relatively little between chords, although there are now some larger jumps when the right hand is static. Level 4: Like level 3, but with the broken chord in compound time throughout. Some of the orchestral accompaniment has been integrated into the music, though simplified. Level 5: The hardest version, more difficult than the original solo piano part. Still no orchestral introduction. Includes more of the orchestral accompaniment than level 4. This, in essence, is a piano transcription of the full orchestration for piano and orchestral. These pieces are like little objects that are simple and direct, yet slightly eccentric. They often seem to be based on traditional notions of harmony or phrasing, but they don’t always get those aspects exactly right. It’s as if what appears to be common little figurines, upon closer inspection, reveal themselves to be more varied, colorful, complex and unpredictable than a quick glance might reveal. I - Mutable Phrase This piece sounds a bit obsessive because all the phrases begin the same way. It almost sounds like somebody repeating a simple one-phrase statement, but constantly changing it with the hope of writing a perfectly nuanced phrase. II - Sparks in Emptiness The use of the sostenuto pedal in this piece creates an effect of reverberating empty space. Within that space, little bursts of energy begin appearing. It sounds like flashes of light in an empty dark space. III - Silent Blue Tides This piece is based on a slowly moving and somewhat unpredictable chord progression. A duo of simple melodies then floats on that chord progression, rising and falling with the moods of that large blue sea.

I must admit that I was far more familiar with the 1956 setting of this poem as sung by Bing Crosby to music by Johnny Marks than I was to the one found in many hymnals. It was on several of the Christmas albums that would be played on the phonograph in our house during the holiday season. However, I chose to arrange the carol setting for this collection as it resonated more deeply with me and seemed to better capture the essence of the poem by Longfellow. He wrote it during the Civil War, on Christmas Day of 1863, and several of the verses make reference to the war. While I did not set any of the Civil War verses, there is an almost martial quality to the opening music and one can almost hear the brass choir ringing out in the first verse. With each subsequent verse, the rhythm of the right hand becomes quicker, moving from half notes to quarter note triplets to eighth notes and finally to eighth note triplets in the final verse. For the most part, the left hand maintains the steady beat of quarter notes, with the exception of the final verse where it begins to move in eighth notes setting up a two-against-three pattern between the hands. It is the most jubilant of the verses and feels like an explosion of sound as the bells ring out across all the land proclaiming God is not dead, nor doth He sleep; The Wrong shall fail, The Right prevail, With peace on earth, good-will to men..
