The double bass part assumes low c extension; however, a non-extension bass part is included.Giovanni Gabrieli's Sonata Pian e Forte is essential as it represents the shift from the Renaissance to the Baroque period. It is part of his 1597 Sacrae symphoniae, which contains sixty-three choral and instrumental works, many in multi-choir formations. It is the first known composition in history to employ dynamics, with Gabrieli using specific notation to indicate instrumentation and experimenting with assembling massive instrumental forces into isolated groups separated by space. This innovation contributed heavily to the Baroque Concertato style and the development of the sonata, a musical form that came into general use toward the end of the sixteenth century. The structure of the piece is defined by the dialogue between two instrumental choirs, making it a key example of Gabrieli's influential contributions to the transition in musical style during his time.

Weinberger was born the son of a goldsmith in Lipto St. Miklo in Hungary but his family moved to Vienna in 1865. In 1885 Josef Weinberger and Carl Hofbauer started an art and music store in Vienna, but the partnership ended when both partners set up on their own, Weinberger in 1890 and Hofbauer in 1892. Weinberger saw the potential, in publishing and licensing, of the craze for operetta, and made a connection with Johann Strauss II. Within a few years all the great operetta composers were his clients: Strauss, Millöcker, Zeller, Kálmán, Oscar Straus, Stolz, and Fall. He even provided licensing services for the last great Viennese operetta composer, Franz Lehár, who from the 1920s published through his own company, Glocken-Verlag.The firm expanded quickly, opening branches in Paris (1885) and Leipzig (1889) where they worked with Friedrich Hofmeister. One of the most remarkable aspects of the developing Weinberger catalogue was the commitment to Czech music, and from April 1893 to August 1894 the Hofmeister entries were almost all by Smetana (various publications of Dalibor and HubiÄka as well as overtures) and Vilém Blodek (V studni); later additions included Tajemstvi (1895) and LibuÅ¡e (1897). Otherwise most of the repertoire was of popular music for various combinations, not least military bands, with von Suppé figuring prominently from 1895 onwards.The mid 1890s also saw significant enlargements of the Weinberger catalogue through the acquisition of other publisher's lists: in 1894 the ancient firm of Artaria, then in 1895 items from the Kratochwill catalogue and over 1,500 works from the Kratz catalogue of theatrical works. This latter acquisition included a number of works with international performing rights, which encouraged Weinberger to open a Parisian branch in 1896, but it also reflected a shift in Weinberger's publishing interests towards theatrical music generally. Another major step in that direction was taken in 1897, when the entire theatrical catalogue of Gustav Lewy – which included the stage works of Johann Strauss the younger and Millöcker – were taken over (with the Strauss performing rights following in 1899).Weinberger was active in three other fields apart from popular music. Firstly, he was Gustav Mahler's third publisher, issuing the Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen in 1897, and distributing Symphonies nos 1-3, Das klagende Lied and Lieder aus des Knaben Wunderhorn (1900) on behalf of the owner of the publishing rights, the Erste Wiener Zeitungsgesellschaft. Secondly, he took an active part in setting up a trade association, AKM (Gesellschaft der Autoren, Komponisten und Musikverleger or society of authors, composers and publishers) to collect the performance fees due for non-theatrical musical works, in 1897. Finally, Weinberger was the driving force behind the founding of Universal Edition in Vienna in 1901, and not only served as its managing director until 1906 (when he was replaced by Arthur Fadüm), but also provided the new company with space in his own firm's premises until 1908.This orchestration is for a brass quintet. The French Horn acts as a substitute or support for Trumpet 2.

That opportunity came in 2015 when I was completing my DMA. There was an opportunity to write a short piece for my final DMA recital, which is where it was premiered by a community trumpet choir. The piece begins with a chorale alluding to shifting colors in space. The piece then shifts into an energetic homage to a few of my favorite trumpet choir pieces that I came across in my research.

Imagine a sleek spy plane cruising steadily at altitude. The root notes likely shift between the E and A strings, outlining the chords with a focus on the lower register. Think of it as the pilot navigating through different airspaces. Throughout the song, there are gonna be some syncopated accents thrown in. Perhaps a descending chromatic line to depict the plane landing safely, or a series of funky slides for a more playful touch. This is just a roadmap, pilot! Feel free to add your own improvisational flourishes, double stops to mimic dogfights, or slap techniques for some extra punch. The recommendation is to use open strings when possible to give the Left-Hand space to relax between the notes and to keep the shifts of the scales to a minimum. Published by Lyons Music Services (A0.767345). This is my second Horn Sonata for unaccompanied horn. Like the first, it has 3 movements, each of which can be played on their own. 1st. Movement: Andante piacere The music of the first section is based on the opening idea. The descending glissandos and the repeated note figures should be taken in a leisurely way, a piacere, rather than in totally strict time. In bar 10, the flz should appear out of the tied note, without a fresh tongue. From letter A, the music is based on the repeated note patterns which are gradually developed and metamorphosed into new shapes in a gradual process. At letter B, a second motif is added which is more expressive and dynamically diverse. The development of this idea reaches a climax at the rall before letter C, from where this idea becomes more frenetic and agitated until it 'tires itself out' in the pauses before letter D. Here the original repeated note motif reappears to provide a basic ternary shape as the original ideas, changed by the development process are re-stated in their new forms. The closing pauses should be played as marked, with comma breaks, but not between the two notes in the penultimate bar. 2nd Movement: Adagio This movement is slow and wistful, atmospheric and drifting. Each phrase should be given its own space. Each individual motif has its own rises and falls and these should be tastefully exaggerated to give them as much definition as possible. 3rd. Movement: Allegro vivace This movement is intended to be flashy and full of life. The 7/8 time signature gives it plenty of off-beat vivacity. Players will need to make sure they know what the pulse is as it shifts from 2+2+3 to 2+3+2 and 3+2+2. Much of the material (motifs) are related to the music of the first two movements so this rousing finale will brig a sense of completeness to the performance of the sonata, though it can, of course, be played as a separate piece in its own right. This movement is both enjoyable and challenging, requiring a good technique and counting skills. The subtle shifts to 6/8 and 5/8 - and even 3/4 time need to be treated with care.

Uxmal At Midnight is a slow tango. The tune is fairly simple however it has a beauty that invokes images and feelings of this magical place. This is one of my minimalist pieces. There are times when I use extended forms and times when I need only a few measures to convey a particular mood. The essential features of this piece are its simplicity, harmonic color, and use of space. The one exception to its simplicity is the shifting time. Like other pieces of mine that use shifting time, this music has a fluid movement -- with time expanding and contracting in ways that feel natural to me. For contrast, I decided to have the solo section entirely in 4/4. My minimalist pieces, and others that have a great amount of freedom, are heavily dependent upon the performers to bring the music to life. ABOUT THIS WORK:In 2016, the Russian Space Corporation announced its newest long-term project: a plan to establish a permanent human colony on the Moon by the year 2030. Several other nations - including Japan, China and the USA - have announced similar projects over the years. I began to think about this idea and its possible implications for human culture. An intriguing question came to mind: if a human settlement on the Moon is developed, would art works be created there? Would there be composers there, writing music?After enough time had passed, what would the music made by inhabitants of such remote colonies sound like?I started to imagine a music that combined well-known elements of the Western tradition with new patterns and concepts, these being an expression of the profoundly different daily-life experiences of living on the Moon. I heard, in my mind, a lonesome chant, performed with a view of a lunar night sky. After the song, a strange pulsating music, maybe a subtle depiction of a process of lunar tectonics. Connecting between these two elements, a third one emerged: a mysterious, oscillating motive, perpetually shifting back and forth between two harmonies; swaying, gently and forever, until lost to a cosmic silence…From these resonant impressions, a primitive sketch started to emerge; a voyage into an unexplored compositional region. Encircle was later chosen as a more evocative word. The harmony surprised me as it suggested shifts and colourations that I would not have expected to conjure. Two upper rotating parts with melodic narrative are supported by bass and baritone lower parts. The final section adds a dance-like short form to end what could otherwise have run and run and run. Names of all the movements in the suite Between the Octaves in the right order are Initiate, Surrender, Thread, Curve, Encircle, Ritualise, Ignite. The whole suite follows a long line from movement 1 to movement 7. However, individual pieces are well suited to be played alone too. Piano Duo is ideally two Steinway grands, otherwise, whatever is available. An enjoyment of the tensions and relationships generated between the two instruments: grand-upright, upright-electronic keyboard is to be explored as a positive. Each piece creates its own world in the suite and can be part of smaller subgroups taken from the suite, in any combination, but the order of the pieces needs to be maintained if more than one is played. Here is a taste of the background to the musical world of this 53 minute compositional suite. During a reflective time I read the following: The whole philosophy of dharma art (Buddhist art) is that you don't try to be artistic, but you just approach objects as they are, and the message comes through automatically. (Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche, from 'True Perception The Path of Dharma Art.' Shambhala 2008, p.133.) The 'objects as they are' became the 'octaves as they are'. As the pieces were composed the octaves had a centring and clarifying role that allowed other material to circulate around or play against them. They acted as pivots, repetitions, drones, ostinati, pointillist nodes, pedals, melodic features, struts, harmonic turnpikes, breathing spaces, bass lines: musical imperatives. The octaves called the musical shots most of the time. When the music pulled a semitone up or down and away from the octaves (as it did quite often) it was especially telling in the context of the ringing spaces the octaves were creating. I became interested in the subtle dislocation that two pianos could provide. By dislocation I mean a degree of tension between the natural acoustics of the two instruments in the room and the players idiosyncrasies as musicians. The whole point of this work was to examine the nature of my syntax, grammar, and compositional thinking. The title demanded one thing above all: what notes am I going to use between these octaves?? My choice of notes was derived in most instances from the tempo, pitch, and rhythm of the initial octaves at the beginning of each piece alongside the individual word titles that I set out to explore as musical images. The audio was developed from Sibelius software, via MIDI to Logic samples of a Steinway grand piano.
