Ships caught in the maelstrom were doomed. In the Odyssey by the Greek poet Homer, Odysseus lost 6 companions while passing through the strait. This part of the adventure was translated into music.

From there, the music is full of passionate melodic lines, and fanfare statements. The music is dominated by the colour of the tenor horn section, which has the ability to create wonderful soft sounds, as well as providing the substance to the fortissimo fanfares. Fanfare for Tony was written for the inaugural conference of the British Association for Music Therapy, and first performed on 21st February 2014 by students of Birmingham Conservatoire of Music, and this is a slightly shortened version. The piece, scored for ten brass instruments and timpani, was written in memory of Prof. Tony Wigram, a leading figure in the world of music therapy, who died in 2011. It contains a number of passing references to music therapy songs, and quotations from music strongly associated with Tony's family, including a Danish folksong (introduced by the four trombones), and a theme from the Organ Symphony by Saint-Saens. A short fugato section leads to a triumphant ending, featuring the German hymn tune Nun danker alle Gott.

In 1853, still grieving for his three-year-old daughter's passing from brain ramollissement, the words of Scottish cleric Henry Lyte's hymn - Abide with me - came to English choirmaster William Monk's mind.  Although the hymn already had a tune, he was inspired by the thought of another and wrote the noble EVENTIDE within 10 minutes.  It was first published in 1861 in Hymns Ancient & Modern. It is performed at funerals, at Remembrance services, and even at sporting events (FA Cup).This setting is in the key of Eb Major, the same as the Hymnals, permitting it to be used as an accompaniment to singing and on its own.  The instrumental leads and harmonies differ for verses 1/3, 2/4 and verse 5.Instrumentation is for British Brass Band instruments of Cornet, Eb Tenor Horn, and Bb Euphonium (TC).  F Horn and Bass Clef Euphonium alternates are included.Duration ~ 4:40 10 pages.

Originally composed in 1933 for the junior orchestra at St. Paul’s Girls School, Holst wrote this suite with the goal of providing his students with a piece that was both challenging and rewarding, while being accessible enough for young musicians. Despite ongoing health issues at the time, Holst managed to complete the suite and personally oversee its first informal performance in early 1934, just months before his passing.This three-movement suite—Prelude, Air, and Dance—is filled with the graceful lyricism and rhythmic energy characteristic of Holst’s later works. The Dance movement, in particular, features a lively tune that Holst recalled hearing at a puppet show during a holiday in Sicily, adding a personal touch to this cheerful finale.Though not drawing specifically on folk song, the Brook Green Suite embodies Holst’s approach to melody and style which are reminiscent of songs he had enountered. The top four voices take turns with the melody while the tuba sets a foundation with chromatic passing tones that should be given a little emphasis as they occur. Away in a Manger The first two verses are sometimes attributed to Martin Luther as “Cradle Hymnâ€, but definitive proof of Luther's authorship is missing. The most common version is based on words found in a Philadelphia Sunday School book by James Murray in 1885 titled “Luther's Cradle Songâ€. Silent Night Franz Gruber was an Austrian church organist at St Nicholas parish in Obernhof, a small town north of Salzburg. The priest at the church, Joseph Mohr wrote the poem Stille Nacht in 1816 and Gruber composed the music for guitar accompaniment for a Christmas eve service in 1818 because something, possibly a flood, had damaged the organ. So, rather than a keyboard composition, this was originally composed for guitar and voice. The composition was preserved by the man who fixed the organ and shared it with other churches as he traveled. Luckily a copy survived so that Mohr and Gruber could both be acknowledged for their creation.

This piece was written to celebrate the granting of polytechnic status to the Humberside College of Higher Education in 1990. Intended to be a moderately easy piece for a good amateur orchestra, it employs MANY TECHNIQUES of composition. Opening in Neo-Classical style, it moves firstly to minimalism, then to a pop ballad. After a short reprise of the minimalist section, there are four aleatoric sections where individual players improvise within the notational limits set out by the composer, with duration set by the conductor. The overture end with a short fugal section interrupted by two hymn-like passages, and the miniscule coda, reverting to the opening tempo, ends with a passing reference to Gaudeamus Igitur, used by Brahms in his Academic Festival Overture.
