Moonlight Serenade è una canzone popolare americana composta da Glenn Miller alla quale si aggiunsero poco dopo le parole di Mitchell Parish. Riscuote subito un fenomenale successo quando è pubblicata nel maggio 1939 come arrangiamento strumentale ed è perciò adottata come sigla musicale di Miller. Nel 1991 l'originaria versione strumentale è premiata col Grammy Hall of Fame Award.La canzone, registrata il 4 aprile 1939 negli studi discografici della Bluebirds Records (una sotto–etichetta della RCA), è subito un successo piazzatosi tra le prime dieci posizioni della classifica americana pop del 1939; in particolare, raggiunge la posizione numero tre nella Billboard Pop 100 mantenendola per 15 settimane. Alla fine dello stesso anno è collocata da Billboard nella quinta posizione della classifica dei successi musicali del 1939, dove Glenn Miller compare con cinque registrazioni tra i primi venti piazzamenti.Nel Regno Unito Moonlight Serenade è incisa sul lato A di un 78 giri dalla casa discografica His Master's Voice; sul lato B si può ascoltare American Patrol. Parsifal è l'ultimo dramma musicale di Richard Wagner, andato in scena il 26 luglio 1882 al Festival di Bayreuth diretto da Hermann Levi, ma rappresentato per la prima volta nei teatri europei solo a partire dal 1º gennaio 1914 con la prima a Bologna con Giuseppe Borgatti.Dopo una gestazione lunga alcuni decenni, l'opera fu composta tra il 1877 e il 1882 e segna il ritorno al tema del Graal, giàaffrontato molti anni prima in Lohengrin. Il preludio dell'opera è stato oggetto di citazione nel film Baci e abbracci (1998), ed usato come colonna sonora nel film Excalibur (1981).L'arrangiamento è diviso in tre parti:1. PreludioL'introduzione sinfonica espone con straordinaria ampiezza il motivo dell'Ultima Cena, articolato col tema della Fede in un discorso interrotto da lunghi silenzi. L'atmosfera di altissima sacralitàsi rivela fin dalle prime battute del preludio, collegandosi direttamente alla scena del primo atto. In una radura boscosa nei pressi del monastero, i cavalieri si destano al sorgere del sole; tra di loro è l'anziano Gurnemanz, il più saggio custode della virtù e della storia del Santo Graal. Giunge al galoppo la selvaggia Kundry, che appare nelle sincere vesti di amica dei cavalieri. La donna ha con sé un'erba medicamentosa proveniente dall'Arabia, pensando che possa servire per lenire la piaga di Amfortas. Dopo un accenno alla profezia del Salvatore, Amfortas viene condotto sul lago per l'abluzione giornaliera, mentre la natura sorride al sole del mattino.2. Ingresso nel Castello del Santo GraalI temi di Klingsor e della Magia commentano il breve preludio orchestrale, mentre la scena rivela l'interno di un favoloso palazzo arabo: Klingsor, guardando nel suo specchio magico, osserva Parsifal venire verso il castello. Solo il nemico del Graal riconosce il puro folle che potrebbe redimere i cavalieri, e lo attira dunque nell'abbraccio mortale di Kundry. L'evocazione della donna ne rivela il passato reincarnato: non fu giàl'Erodiade che rise in faccia al Battista? Così Klingsor la chiama e la obbliga ad adempiere al proprio castigo. Ma pur preda di terribili sofferenze, Kundry ride in faccia anche a lui, beffeggiando la castitàche lo accomuna ai cavalieri del Graal.3. Incantesimo del Venerdì Santo Questa scena è un altro punto chiave dell’opera, senza dubbio uno dei momenti musicali più ispirati di Wagner, che illustra come la natura che circonda i personaggi riflette la santitàdel giorno, rivelandosi in tutto il proprio splendore.

È la prima delle tre opere italiane scritte dal compositore salisburghese su libretto di Lorenzo Da Ponte.Musicato da Mozart all'etàdi ventinove anni, il testo dapontiano fu tratto dalla commedia Le nozze di Figaro di Beaumarchais (autore della trilogia di Figaro : Il barbiere di Siviglia , Il matrimonio di Figaro e La madre colpevole ).Dal Terzo Atto - Finale Ecco la marcia, andiamo (Susanna, La Contessa, Il Conte, Figaro; Coro).Le Nozze di Figaro è una delle più famose opere di Mozart e dell'intero teatro musicale, ed è la prima di una serie di felici collaborazioni tra Mozart e Da Ponte, che ha portato anche alla creazione del Don Giovanni e di Così fan tutte .Fu Mozart stesso a portare una copia della commedia di Beaumarchais a Da Ponte, che la tradusse in lingua italiana (tuttora la lingua ufficiale dell'opera lirica) e che (d'accordo con Mozart) rimosse tutti gli elementi di satira politica dalla storia. L'opera fu scritta da Mozart in gran segreto (la commedia era stata vietata dall'imperatore Giuseppe II, poiché attica l'odio tra le varie classi sociali). Questo è un periodo in cui è stato scritto. Eppure è solo dopo aver convinto l'imperatore della rottura delle scene politicamente più discusse che hanno visto il permesso di rappresentare l'opera.Inoltre, la scena finale del terzo atto, che comprendeva un balletto e una pantomima, si dovette scontrare con un divieto imperiale di rappresentare balli in scena. Racconta Da Ponte, nelle sue memorie , che lui e Mozart, non intendono rinunciare al finale come l'avevo concepito, invitarono l'imperatore ad assistere a una prova, dove si sono giocati quel pezzo muto. L'imperatore subito ordinò che la musica fosse reinserita.Così Le Nozze di Figaro , finita di comporre il 29 aprile, fu messa in scena al Burgtheater di Vienna, il 1º maggio 1786 con Nancy Storace (Susanna), Francesco Benucci (Figaro) e Michael Kelly (tenore) (Basilio e Don Curzio) , diretta dal compositore nelle prime due rappresentazioni e da Joseph Weigl nelle repliche. Ottenne un successo strepitoso, al punto che l'Imperatore, dopo la terza recita, dovette emanare un decreto per limitare le richieste di bis, in modo che le repliche non durassero troppo. Ancor più grande fu il successo al Teatro Nazionale di Praga (dal 17 gennaio 1787), colomba (una detta di Mozart): «Qui non sta che che del Figaro, non si suona, non si strombetta, non si canta, non si fischia che il Figaro, non si va a sentire altra opera che il Figaro. Eternamente Figaro! ».L'opera è in quattro atti e ruota attorno alle trame del Conte d'Almaviva, invaghito della cameriera della Contessa, Susanna, alla quale cerca di imporre lo ius primae noctis. La vicenda si svolge in un intreccio serrato e folle, in cui donne e uomini si contrappongono nel corso di una giornata di passione travolgente, piena sia di eventi drammatici che comici, e nella quale alla fine i servi si dimostrano più signori e intelligenti dei loro padroni. L'opera è per Mozart (e prima di lui per Beaumarchais) un pretesto per prendersi gioco delle classi sociali dell'epoca che da lì a poco saranno travolte dai fatti con la Rivoluzione francese. L'intera vicenda può anche essere letta come una metafora delle diverse fasi dell'amore: Cherubino e Barbarina rappresentano l'amore acerbo, Susanna e Figaro l'amore che sboccia, il Conte e la Contessa l'amore logorato e senza più alcuna passione, Marcellina e don Bartolo l'amore maturo.

Titanic è la colonna sonora dell'omonimo pluripremiato film del 1997, diretto da James Cameron.Cameron all'inizio voleva Enya come compositrice delle musiche, ma lei rifiutò. Allora la scelta cadde su James Horner, con il quale Cameron aveva avuto una collaborazione con Aliens - Scontro finale.Per i titoli di coda, Cameron non voleva un sottofondo musicale cantato, ma Horner, contrario all'idea, senza dir nulla al regista compose la famosissima traccia My Heart Will Go On, e Will Jennings scrisse il testo. Venne effettuata una registrazione con la cantante Céline Dion, Cameron cambiò idea all'istante, e alla fine la composizione vinse il Premio Oscar per la migliore canzone, andando in testa alle classifiche di tutto il mondo.Il successo fu tale che venne realizzato un secondo album intitolato Back to Titanic con delle ulteriori musiche contenute nel film, ma non nell'album precedente.

La Messa da Requiem di Giuseppe Verdi è un'opera certamente religiosa, ma in un modo tutto suo, scritta cioè da un uomo che non era propriamente praticante: composta ed eseguita (su un precedente progetto per Rossini) nel 1874 per commemorare Alessandro Manzoni a un anno dalla scomparsa, è un lavoro che unisce, alla devozione quasi filiale per i due Grandi, una sensibilitàoperistica tutta verdiana. E in verità, i cantanti solisti che Verdi aveva in mente nello scrivere la partitura erano certamente voci d’opera.La prima nella chiesa di San Marco a Milano ebbe un tale successo che si tennero altre tre esecuzioni al Teatro alla Scala. Francis Tovey scrive: La Messa era arrivata nella sua vera casa (...) dove il pubblico, che non doveva badare alle convenzioni ecclesiastiche, poté dare sfogo al proprio entusiasmo, con esuberanza tipicamente italiana. Verdi non aveva intenzione di riservare la partitura a rare, solenni commemorazioni. La qualitàdrammatica e operistica del Requiem mal si adatta all’uso di un servizio regolare in chiesa, né il compositore voleva che funzionasse come liturgia. Fin dall'inizio, Verdi ha concepito il suo Requiem per l’esecuzione, non per la devozione; voleva che il suo lavoro fosse complementare alla popolaritàdi Manzoni per mostrare al mondo la cultura italiana, tanto che lo portò personalmente in tournée a Parigi, New York, Londra e Vienna.Il Requiem di Verdi, come Ein deutsches Requiem di Johannes Brahms, è l’affermazione di un dolore personale che si serve di un testo preso in prestito dalla liturgia sacra.Neanche Brahms, come Verdi, era particolarmente devoto. Per entrambi, le parole della messa da requiem per i defunti rappresentano il bisogno universale di esprimere le emozioni che ci assalgono quando una persona amata muore: dolore, perdita, tristezza, rabbia, paura del giudizio divino e speranza di pace sia per i defunti che per coloro che sono in lutto.Verdi inizia con i versi Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine che il coro e l'orchestra intonano in fasi sommesse e raccolte. I quattro solisti si uniscono al coro e all'orchestra per uno stentoreo Kyrie eleison. Il tonitruante boato orchestrale e corale del Dies irae che segue immediatamente il Kyrie è il momento più atteso e memorabile del Requiem. Qui i musicisti, i coristi e i cantanti devono produrre esplosioni sonore continue e inarrestabili. Gli ottoni, le percussioni, i legni e il coro sono tirati al massimo, mentre le voci gridano sgomento e dolore, e gli archi crescono di intensitàe impeto. Del resto, il materiale musicale del pauroso Dies irae ritorna di continuo lungo tutta la Messa, dipingendo un quadro da Giorno del Giudizio: non a caso l’opera è stata equiparata all’affresco michelangiolesco della Cappella Sistina. Un lavoro cupamente drammatico, con intermittenti, brevi, violenti lampi di luce.Di volta in volta, Verdi ci fa vivere il terrore dell'inferno (timbri e registri bassi) e la luminosa speranza di salvezza, preparandoci alla gioia del Sanctus, con la tromba che annuncia Santo, santo, santo, Signore degli eserciti! Il cielo e la terra sono pieni della tua gloria!Verdi conclude il suo Requiem con un soprano che intona i primi versi di Libera me (Liberami, o Signore, dalla morte eterna in quel terribile giorno). Tutto il dramma, il terrore, l’angoscia delle sezioni precedenti ritorna, come se il compositore intendesse lasciarci con un senso di incertezza: saremo, alla fine, riscattati? Verdi riprende qui la musica del Dies irae, ma alla fine, il coro e il soprano finiscono in un sussurro quasi impercettibile, con Libera me. Libera me: una speranza, una preghiera, un gemito sommesso.

He wrote the mass for the Cathedral at Reims, where he served as a canon, a permanent clergy member. According to a rubric at the Cathedral, it would have likely been performed for the Saturday Lady Mass.  Guillaume de Machaut's Messe de Nostre Dame is significant in the history of music for several reasons: It is the first complete setting of the Ordinary of the Mass by a single composer that has survived. It is a unified mass, meaning the composer selected relevant chants for each section as the borrowed tenor. It was composed in four voices, which was unusual at the time. The texts of both Gloria and Credo are pretty lengthy. Therefore, Machaut set these movements in a style reminiscent of the earlier discant style, having short phrases, similar rhythmic motion in all parts, and a low ratio of notes per syllable of text, ending with long, rhapsodic sections for the final word, Amen. Machaut's Messe de Nostre Dame is a landmark in musical history, but it is far from being avant-garde merely for its uniqueness. It is considered to be a culmination of the musical style of the Ars Nova period, which was characterized by complex polyphonic textures and rhythmic innovations. The mass is also significant because it was composed during a time of great political and social upheaval in Europe, and it reflects the changing attitudes towards religion and music during this period. Overall, Machaut's Messe de Nostre Dame is a significant work that represents a culmination of the musical style of the Ars Nova period and reflects the changing attitudes towards religion and music during the 14th century.  The mass consists of five movements: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei, followed by the dismissal Ite, missa est. The tenor of the Kyrie is based on Vatican Kyrie IV, the Sanctus and Agnus correspond to Vatican Mass XVII, and the Ite is on Sanctus VIII. Although the Gloria and Credo have no apparent chant basis, they are stylistically related. The mass is unified, meaning the composer selected relevant chants as the borrowed tenor for each section. The Messe de Nostre Dame is significant in the history of music because it is the first complete setting of the Ordinary of the Mass by a single composer that has survived.
