In Austria it is a well known and established song used at funerals, in particular, when the mortal remains are given to their final resting place.The melody of the German Protestant funeral chant Über den Sternen (Beyond the stars) was composed by Franz Wilhelm Abt. The lyrics were written by Ida Hahn-Hahn and were published in 1868.The PDF contains the score and all parts. The extra parts are not necessary, but are provided if you have extra players such as a Bb Piccolo Trumpet & Bb Trombone/Euphonium in TC.New Orleans-born clarinetist Barney Bigard is likely the originator of this tune, a simple blues riff in the key of C. Since Bigard was a veteran member of Duke Ellington’s Orchestra in 1941, Duke had a slice of the pie, too, and undoubtedly arranged the piece for the orchestra. Yet Duke referred to the number somewhat disparagingly as “one of our more or less trite things.â€The number was introduced in a Soundie short film. These three-minute features, produced to be shown on a jukebox-type player, illustrated the band miming to a pre-recorded performance. Entitled “Jam Session†the Soundie was filmed late in 1941 along with four other Ellington numbers. Duke introduces various band members, who then solo: Ray Nance (violin), Ben Webster (tenor sax), Rex Stewart (cornet), Joe “Tricky Sam†Nanton (trombone), and Sonny Greer (drums). The complete ensemble carries the tune to its finish with composer Bigard (clarinet) providing some improvised upper register piping.“C Jam Blues†was formally recorded under that title in January, 1942, for RCA Victor Records. It continued be a staple of the Ellington repertoire, generally featuring a handful of the soloists in the band.Co-composer Barney Bigard left Duke’s band in June 1942, and after a period of freelancing joined Louis Armstrong’s All-Stars in August, 1947. “C Jam Blues†was one of his nightly features with Satch’s ensemble along with “Tea for Two.†Despite playing the tune hundreds, or perhaps even thousands of times during his tenure with Ellington and Armstrong, he continued to perform it during his freelance years in the 1950s until shortly before his death in 1980.In the late-1950s very simple words were added (“Baby, let’s go down to ‘Duke’s Place’,†etc.) which strangely took a three-member team of writers to assemble: songwriters William Katz and Ruth Roberts and record producer Bob Thiele. Clarinetist Barney Bigard was not included in the composer credits of the song version, although he was a member of Louis Armstrong’s All-Stars when they recorded “Duke’s Place,†featuring Louis on the vocal, with Ellington in 1961.The piece typically features several improvised solos. The final solo continues in the upper register as the entire ensemble comes in and the music grows to a climax. The melody likely originated from the clarinetist Barney Bigard in 1941, but its origin is not perfectly clear.It was also known as Duke’s Place, with lyrics added by Bill Katts, Bob Thiele and Ruth Roberts Western Swing band leader Bob Wills and His Texas Playboys recorded the song sometime between mid-1945 through 1947 as part of the Tiffany Transcriptions.The 10-note occasional riff formed the basis of the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band’s novelty song Intro Outro.Need an anthem fast? The video of inspiring US flag pictures to accompany the music was released the same day. In my opinion, Flag Day is grossly under-celebrated. Far too many Americans don’t even know that it is on the calendar. With my deep love for America and the glorious stars and stripes that represent everything good in the nation, as Flag Day approached in 2024 toward the end of my first of three years serving in Japan, I strove arduously to complete this work in time for official release on this patriotic day. It quickly gained traction on social media outlets and is truly a rousing patriotic piece. It is a substantial concert piece for any occasion with a duration of 4:45.

There is nothing more quintessentially military than the grand sound of marches at special military events. Hundreds of marches have served their purposes through the many decades of military tradition in the United States of America. This 3.5-minute march was composed for the occasion of the change of command of the 55th Wing—“The Fightin’ 55thâ€â€”under Air Combat Command, located at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska. The ceremony took place on June 14, 2019, which was also Flag Day. The new march served as a grateful tribute to the outgoing Commander, Colonel Michael H. Manion, and a welcoming gesture to the new Commander, Colonel Gavin P. Marks. Printed copies of the score were presented to the Commanders before the ceremony, and the march was premiered as the final pre-ceremony musical selection. The opening motifs are strongly reminiscent of the introductory measures of the “Air Force Song†most commonly played by Air Force brass quintets. Keeping in tradition with the form of most marches, the “Trio†section presents new material in a new key (down a fifth), with a contrastingly quiet dynamic. The opening motif of the Trio strain is a mutation, or a paraphrase, of “Anchors Aweighâ€, emphasizing the joint-force nature of the 55th Wing. The melody is repeated with a louder dynamic and a countermelody in the horn, and then is repeated once more with increased excitement in the accompaniment, variety of dynamics, and even a temporary key shift. Straying from the form most used by the “March Kingâ€, John Philip Sousa, Dr. Thrower omitted a fourth or final strain, and instead he modulated the key back to the original B-flat major and brought back the melodic content from the first strain. This form predates Sousa, and was more commonly used in Europe and early America. It smacks of “sonata formâ€, and even the modern formal designation of “recapitulating march†alludes to sonata form. The final recapitulating strain repeats with an obbligato soaring above it in the first trumpet part, now on piccolo trumpet. The march ends with a short coda that brings back the opening motivic allusion to the Air Force Song. Due to the selected formal structure, this march, “The Fightin’ 55thâ€, is much more unified than most typical marches. The very nature of military marches (including America’s beloved “Stars and Stripes Foreverâ€) displays four or even five completely unrelated melodies, or strains, throughout. The incorporation of thematic structure similar to that found in sonata form indeed makes “The Fightin’ 55th†an appropriate and even artistic concert march.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.810733). Cornet solos are an important part of the American Brass tradition. The Southern Cross is one of Clarke's most well known Cornet solos and was written in 1911, dedicated to the Australians and first recorded by the composer with Orchestra the next year  for Victor Records. During 1911, Clarke was the solo Cornetist of the Sousa Band while the band was on a world tour that included visits to South Africa, Tazmania and Australia from March through to August. Below is a photo of the Sousa band from their 1911 tour. Clarke is sitting in the front row 5th in from the right with his moustache and his Cornet on his lap. He assuredly composed this solo to perform on that tour. The Southern Cross is a constellation that is only seen from the southern hemisphere and features the five stars of the Cross from the 1901 design of the Australian flag. This 5-minute virtuosic arrangement by Geoffrey Bergler features not only the Cornet, but a bit of all the other four members of the Brass Quintet. Instrumentation is for: 2 Trumpets in B-flat (Trumpet 1 solo, Trumpet 2 also plays Piccolo) Horn, Trombone Tuba/Bass Trombone The sound track features Mr. Bergler from his student days as Cornet soloist.
