'I Saw Three Ships (Come Sailing In)' arrangement for solo guitar by Antony Cull.IntroductionThis arrangement is aimed at intermediate level guitarists with a good control of natural harmonics and basic fingerstyle. The whole piece has the harmonic structure written in the chords above, which can be strummed by another player to turn the piece into a duet. Alternatively you can use these chords to accompany a singer and add the solo guitar arrangement as a introduction.Performance NotesThe first section outlines the basic harmony, often omitting notes from the chords above, to outline the melody. To keep each section distinct, keep the pace of this section slow and expressive.The next section has a celtic inspired feel, with the constant quavers throughout to drive the piece forward. Note the increase in tempo, but adjust to a comfortable speed for your ability as you are mostly aiming to play faster then the introduction. Practice this section slowly at first, taking time to choose the most comfortable finger position. Once you have the fingering locked in, work on making the melody pop out from the over all picking pattern, relax the attack on the thumb to help this.The third section uses natural harmonics to play the melody. To play a natural harmonic place you fretting finger lightly on the string above the stated fret. As you pick the string, remove your you finger and you should get a bell like tome that sounds a different pitch to the open string. Let each string ring out after each harmonic is played over the subsequent notes until another note is played on that string. In bar 19 and 23 there is a single fretted note so be prepared to switch technique on a dime. This will create a rich harp like feel to the piece that will give a really christmassy feel.The only big change in the coda is a gentle ritardando and an arppegiated harmonic across three strings. Gently place a finger across the three strings and role them off the as they are picked. Final ThoughtsI am a really big fan of tight arrangements and love constructing arrangements for my students. One of my greatest challenges is creating performance pieces for guitarists that don't sing. This is especially ponient during the holidays when everyone wants to hear all the classics. This piece is extremely musical and the harmonics are a real crowd pleaser. I hope you will enjoy my fingerings for Agustín Barrios' La Catedral - Andante Religioso & Allegro Solemne; the second and third movements of this great piece.
Barrios had originally composed La Catedral in 1921 as a two-movement piece and so the piece was originally known as having only these two movements. Some seventeen years later, he then composed another piece entitled 'Saudade' (available, separately, as a stand-alone piece) and then a year after composing it, decided to include it as the prelude to the already existing two-movement version. Although it is well-known that Barrios' always included Preludio 'Saudade' whenever performing La Catedral, there are actually no original written copies of the three-movement version.
In this arrangement, some liberties were taken with Allegro Solemne in the 21st measure as it was thought to make for a smoother progression.

This is a disadvantage in this way, however, knowing large portions of the scale neck in one position will allow you to play a key throughout the fretboard with no gaps in notes. In otherwords, learning one ocatave scales can have concise music theory, but it's impossible to know the scale in every part of the neck completely that way. Features:1. Color coding. Blue notes are home (tonic) notes. Red notes are away (dominant) notes. Simplifying harmony this much can often make you more creative not less since you are crafting the harmonies yourself. 2. Left hand fingerings added. Don't mistake these for fingering numbers.3. Letter names to aid in memorization.Notes:I realize that the hand written font doesn't look the most professional, however this is intentional. I tried making these in photo editors, but since every shape was perfect they were actually harder to memorize from (kind of living driving in a tunnel with no landmarks).

Bach (1685-1750) wrote a series of 24 compositions, one for each major and minor key, and he called it “The Well Tempered Clavier,†which was a keyboard type instrument. The “Prelude in C†has been transcribed by a number of people for classical guitar.  It is basically a beautiful chord progression with a picking pattern.  About 110 years later the French composer, Charles Gounod, added a melody to it and called it “Ave Maria.†It became known as the “Bach-Gounod Ave Maria,†and you can often hear it played as a duet for flute and piano. Tarrega actually transcribed it for classical guitar in the late 1800s but you would need virtuoso skills to play it. As playability is always a priority in my arrangements I made some compromises.I kept the melody and chord progression and, to the extent I could, the bass notes.  But the voicing, those notes between the bass and melody that were real important to Bach, I just let fall where they may and used common guitar chord forms.The end result Is beautiful, recognizable, and quite playable.

God brought them to this land of promise before the Jews were carried away captive into Babylon. I know this is true. You can read the Book of Mormon. You can ask God for yourself if it is true. Then you too can know, for God will answer your prayer.

Also, this mindset helps in composing, because instead of seeing things as wrong chord versus correct chord, you simply see it as every harmony as a name. Like many things in life, theoritcal concepts can allow you to formulate thousands of outcomes in a single day. Tips:1. You start counting from 0 for this exercise if that makes any sense. Avoid the common fence post error by overcounting by 1. Other times you start counting from 1 in music is when talking about scale degrees. What is the distance from C to E? C(0) C#(1) D(2) D#(3) E(4).2. Use the chromatic scale at the top to help in counting.3. E# = F...Fb = E...B# = C...Cb = B...In otherwords, don't let strange enharmonics confuse you. Picture the black key sometimes missing between white keys on a piano in your mind if it helps. 4. Even though enharmonics like E# can seem confusing, they can actually add clarity sometimes because they cause the chord to stack perfectly in the sheet music and letter names. A# C# E#...versus...A# C# F...Sure, F is easier to understand in a part, but it actually makes the harmony harder to understand because not it looks like it isn't 3rds, even though it is.5. I included tab just to make this worksheet a little bit more interesting; however, the guitar chords that result are NOT practical. Voicings of common guitar chords are much more spread out, and often contain more duplicate letter names. Practical guitar chords is sort of a different conversation. I sort of did this intentionally to prove that perfectly stacked voicings do not work well on guitar. C E G Bb perfectly in order in harmony, sounds like it would be easy on guitar, but it is not.6. To make this more practical on guitar, I recommend building the chords yourself by simply knowing letter names well on guitar. The next time something asks for G major, don't just play a common voicing, actually find G B D randomly on the guitar neck. 7. Often the fifth of a chord is removed since it is the least important to invoking the flavor of the chord. This is especially true on guitar because we quickly run out of fingers and strings.8. The nature of the piano lends pianists to constantly seeing these distances on a linear plane. Conversely, guitar is a very murky instrument since the real distances of pitches is counterintuitive to arbitrary (usually) fret numbers! That is why many guitarists would benefit from thinking this way, instead of thinking of chords simply as shapes (which is also important for different reasons). In other words, try to build a chord on one string on guitar. It is impractical, but the half step distances required for chords will make much more sense.To Do:1. Bass driven chord progressions are a characteristic feature of accomplished guitarists like James Taylor and Chet Atkins.‘Clawhammer’ technique or ‘Travis picking’ are the names often given to a style of playing four bass notes to the bar (usually alternating from root to fifth of the chord played with the R.H.thumb). If you listen to the great country guitarist Chet Atkins you will hear this ‘clawhammer’ style in most of his guitar arrangements.Useful hammer-ons/pull-offs and passing notes that will improve your technique and add a professional touch to enhance your guitar performances. Note the pull off on G chord in bar 11.Intro and outro sections are included in this James Taylor guitar arrangement of ‘You can close your eyes’Most songs have intros and outros so that the singer can get the tempo and start in the right key. However, many published arrangements often just start on a pick-up note or two on the last beat of the bar with no chord indicated and end the song on a chord that is not the tonic or main key chord that tells the listener the song has ended. ‘Leaving On A Jet Plane’ by John Denver is a good example. In the key of ‘D’ the song starts with the notes ‘C#’ and ‘E’ and then the first bar is indicated as ‘D’ major chord. If you start the song playing a ‘D’ chord you will most likely sing the wrong notes because ‘C#’ and ‘E’ belong to the A7 chord of the song. So a simple 2 bar intro of ‘D’ , A7 (start singing on the last beat) and back to ‘D’ would help the singer to get the tempo and sing the correct pick-up notes. The printed sheet music of ‘Leaving On A Jet Plane’ ends on an ‘A7’ chord of the chorus and as such does not indicate that the end chord should be ‘D’. So it is not always safe to assume that the end chord in printed music indicates the key of the song. Lyrics with chord symbols to show when to change chords. Matching the fingerpicking tab or sheet music to the lyrics can sometimes prove difficult so I have included a lyrics sheet of ‘You can close your eyes’ with chord symbols. This is a very popular format to give an indication when to change chords. However, the drawback is that there is no way of knowing how long each chord lasts as the bar structure is missing.
