Published by Maria Thompson Corley (A0.1252822). “Pax Aeternam†was written in memory of renowned composer Barbara York, a fellow Canadian whom I was blessed enough to meet in person through my interaction with Matt Brown. Though we connected many years into my collaborative piano career, Matt is the first tubist I ever worked with, and Barbara’s music was my favorite part of getting introduced to the tuba literature. I was thrilled to learn how much she appreciated my playing of her work.“How Beautiful†was written in memory of Matt’s son Eli, who had a congenital condition that took his life a few hours after he was born. This flawless piece of music, poignant yet never maudlin, provided the title for a recording Matt and I did of all of Barbara’s tuba output. It also threw down the gauntlet when Danny Rowland approached me, at Matt’s suggestion, about composing a piece. Danny mentioned loving “How Beautiful,†and intending to commission Barbara, who’d recently passed on. I’d never written for the tuba before, but felt absolutely no pressure. That’s a lie.Like “How Beautiful,†“Pax Aeternam†is in a major key; in my case, I wanted to evoke wistfulness rather than despair. Barbara’s path was full of suffering, and having lost a brother to prolonged illness, I’ve come to embrace the idea that death can be a sweet relief from pain. I tried to capture some of Barbara’s spirit, particularly in the middle section, and chose triple meter to give the outer sections a bit of “swing.†I don’t recall Barbara as a somber person, and I wanted to paint a portrait of someone who moved through life with a smile. I didn’t know her as well as many, but I always found her kind, generous, and unpretentious. I hope that this musical portrait does her justice.I created a cello transcription for a performance with Sara Male, my partner in Duo Chiaroscuro. This seemed appropriate, since “Still Waters Running Deep,†one of our signature pieces, is a transcription of the slow movement of Barbara’s bassoon sonata, created at our request by the composer.

English • German.Adrien-Francois Servais was born on 6.6.1807 in Halle, Belgium and died there on 26.11.1866. From 1829 Servais taught cello in Brussels, where from 1848 he was a professor at the Conservatoire royal de musique. Concert tours across Europe earned him a high reputation as a virtuoso performer: he was described by Berlioz as the ‘Paganini of the cello’. The piano accompaniment is by the Belgian pianist Jacques Mathieu Joseph Gregoir (Grégoir), who was born in Antwerp on 19.1.1817 and died in Brussels on 29.10.1876. He studied with Henri Herz and Christian Rummel, both of whom worked with Schott as composers. Gregoir was a successful piano virtuoso and published several piano works with Schott. Together with Servais he made a collection of thirty arrangements of famous operatic melodies in the series Collection des Duos concertants, including works by Bellini, Mozart, Wagner und Verdi. The piano accompaniment here demands very full chords and can in places be difficult to play: as with a piano reduction, it can be simplified somewhat by leaving out a few notes here and there. The Duo brillant No. 10 on themes from Wagner’s opera Tannhäuser was published in 1861 (plate no. 16412).

English • German.Belgian cellist Jules de Swert was born on 15.8.1843 in Leuven; he died in Ostend on 24.2.1891. His first cello lessons were with his father in Leuven, then from 1856 to 1858 he studied with Adrien Francois Servais in Brussels. Immediately after completing his studies he embarked on a very successful concert tour across Denmark, Sweden and Germany. He then found employment in Düsseldorf, Weimar – and Berlin, where he was Director of Music at court and teacher at the Academy of Music. In Vienna he was then appointed principal cellist at the Imperial Opera and professor at the Vienna Conservatoire. In 1888 de Sweet returned to Belgium, where besides teaching at Conservatoires in Ghent and Bruges he also worked as a conductor. Despite his busy concert schedule and teaching commitments, Jules de Swert still found time for composition. Alongside original pieces for cello and piano as well as transcriptions (particularly of works by Chopin) he composed two cello concertos, several orchestral works and operas. This transcription of Chopin’s Valse in E minor was published in 1876 (plate no. 22003).

English • German.Jacques Offenbach, son of a Jewish cantor, was born in Cologne on 20.6.1819; he died in Paris on 5.10.1880. In 1833 his father took his fourteen-year-old son to the Paris Conservatoire, where the director Luigi Cherubini was impressed by his cello playing and accepted him as a student, even though foreign candidates were not normally admitted there. Offenbach then changed his first name ‘Jacob’ to ‘Jacques’. From 1835 he worked as a cellist at the Paris Opéra comique, making ends meet by teaching and performing. From 1850 to 1855 he was Director of Music at the Théâtre Français. He then found his own theatre to rent in Paris and put on highly successful productions of his operetta Orpheus in the Underworld (1858) and other stage works. During his lifetime he had twenty cello compositions published by Schott, among them the tutorial method Cours Méthodique de Duos pour deux Violoncelles op. 49 and various operatic arrangements for cello and piano based on themes by Bellini, Donizetti, Mozart and others - including this Fantaisie facile sur l’Opéra de Rossini: Le Barbier de Seville op. 71 in 1856 (plate no. 11461).

English • German.Belgian composer and cellist Louis Jean Marie Baerwolf (Barwolf) was born in Bruges in 1841 (his exact date of birth is unknown) and died in Brussels on 12.1.1899. He first studied violin, cello and piano at the Conservatoire in Liège – and also played the organ in his native Bruges. From 1862 he studied at the Conservatoire Royal in Brussels. After completing his studies, he was employed for many years at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, where his brother Jean worked as a conductor; from 1889-1898 he worked as librarian at that theatre. Baerwolf composed primarily church music, including a Requiem, several masses and motets; he also wrote songs, chamber music and a Cello Concerto op. 48. Two of his compositions for cello and piano were published by Schott: a Mouvement perpétuel op. 66 and our choice, the melodic Morceau de Salon op. 54, which makes a good encore piece. It was published by Schott in 1873 as plate no. 20831.

A very popular number for weddings, also effective for meditations and recital encores. Carl Bohm Carl Bohm, sometimes spelled with a K as in Karl Bohm, was born in 1844 and died in 1920. Bohm was a German composer, pianist, and songwriter. He was famous for writing songs with a light and optimistic atmosphere. Some of his most famous songs are Calm as the Night, Twilight, May Bells, Enfant Cheri, and The Fountain. In addition to his songs, he was a very popular composer of string quartets and string trios. His music was very popular and profitable. His publisher used some of the profits from sales of Bohm’s work to prepare the works of Johannes Brahms for publication. Output He certainly was prolific, not only with individual compositions but collections and albums of original music, such as the Bohm Album for the Pianoforte. The quality of his melodies is remarkable. They have a familiar quality similar to folk-songs. It’s no wonder they have become so popular.  His greatest masterpiece may well be the famous Calm as the Night as it is so well finished and refined. This song comes to us from a collection known simply as Lieder Op. 326. Calm as the Night (Still wie die Nacht) is listed as Number 27 in the collection. The song is scored for vocal duet and piano. The lyrics for Bohm’s Still wie die Nacht are anonymous. Lyrics: Still wie die Nacht Und tief wie das Meer, Soll deine Liebe sein! Wenn du mich liebst, So wie ich dich, Will ich dein eigen sein. English • German.Italian cellist and composer Alfredo Piatti was born in Bergamo on 8.1.1822; he died in Crocetto di Mozzo near Bergamo on 18.7.1901. After studying at the Milan Conservatoire (1832-37) he embarked on concert tours across Europe, performing in Munich in 1843 with Franz Liszt, who gave Piatti an Amati cello after financial difficulties had obliged him to sell his own cello. Piatti played with Clara Schumann, Felix Mendelssohn, Joseph Joachim, Edvard Grieg, Anton Rubinstein and Hector Berlioz. From 1859-98 he was principal cellist at the famous ‘Popular Concerts’ held on Saturdays and Mondays in London, while also teaching at the Royal Academy of Music. His Capricci op. 25 are among the most frequently used cello studies to this day. Piatti published various character pieces and arrangements with Schott, as well as four Sonatas for cello and piano. This Siciliana was published in 1869 as plate no. 16396.

English • German.Cellist, conductor and composer Georg Goltermann, born in Hannover on 19.8.1824, died in Frankfurt (Main) on 29.12.1898, had cello lessons with the principal cellist of the royal court orchestra in Hanover, August Christian Prell (1805-1885), a pupil of Bernhard Romberg. From 1847-49 he continued his studies in Munich with the celebrated cellist Joseph Menter and studied composition with Ignaz Lachner, Director of Music at the court in Munich. Goltermann undertook numerous concert tours as a cellist; from 1853 he was Assistant Director of Music at the municipal theatre in Frankfurt am Main, becoming Director of Music from 1854. He wrote numerous pieces for cello and had a particular gift for the Romantic character piece, composing lyrical pieces with titles such as Ballade, Elegie, Song Without Words and various dances. As his compositions are generally not too demanding, they are well liked by amateur musicians and frequently used for tuition purposes. This Mazurka comes from the set of Trois morceaux caractéristiques op. 41, published by Schott in 1864 (plate no. 17419).

He is often referred to as J. B. Foerster, and his surname is sometimes spelled Förster.-Life-Foerster was born in Prague. His ancestors were of Bohemian German ethnicity, but had assimilated into the Czech community. The family normally lived in Prague and was musical. English • German.Hugo Becker was a notable cellist and teacher: born in Strasbourg on 13.2.1863, he died in Geiselgasteig near Munich on 30.7.1941. He started cello lessons with his father Jean Becker and was later taught by A. Piatti, J. de Swert and F. Grützmacher. Becker was initially employed as a cellist at the Mannheim National Theatre and then as principal cellist in the opera orchestra in Frankfurt am Main (1884–1886). From 1887–1906 he taught cello at the Hoch Conservatoire in Frankfurt, from 1909–1929 as a professor at the Academy of Music in Berlin. His book on the Mechanics and Aesthetics of Playing the Cello (Berlin 1929) deals with the physiological principles of cello playing and is still worth reading today. Schott published Becker’s Cello Concerto in A major op. 10 as well as some short character pieces. Andante religioso op. 2 is in three sections (A-B-A) with a lyrical A section and a faster rhythmic middle section. It was published by Schott in 1887 as plate number 24419.

Born in the village of Brand in the Upper Palatinate, Max Reger (1873 1916) was taught by the renowned music theoretician Hugo Riemann. After finishing his studies and working as a freelance performer and composer in Wiesbaden, he moved to Weiden, beset by personal crises, and eventually to Munich. To make himself better known in the musical scene, he had some of his smaller works inserted in the magazine Neue Musikzeitung. This is how his Romanze G-Dur for violin and piano was published in November 1901, a beautiful occasional work, ideal for music lessons or as a tranquil encore after a concert, also in an arrangement for violoncello and piano.
