Published by Adrian Gagiu (A0.1277132). Missa Solemnis in B major, op. 27, vocal score and piano part (for rehearsal purposes only). Based on its Neo-classical style, this setting of the Roman Catholic mass text could possibly work as a festive mass (missa solemnis) with trumpets and timpani, and its duration would fit such a solemn service. However, its intense and sometimes dramatic treatment and universal addressability due to its well-known and rather concentrated text, yet also due to eliminating the „Filioque†(which would still fit the rhythm of the repeated „qui ex Patreâ€, should any Catholics ever wish to perform this as a mass) make it rather a „liturgical oratorio for all nationsâ€, more appropriate in the concert hall. The work has had a long gestation: imagined in 1984 after the composer’s first contact with Beethoven’s masterpiece, then sketched first in 1987-1989, and many of its themes date back from those years. Its working out is quite polyphonic, discretely modal and cyclical, and also full of centuries-old musical symbols traditionally associated with the setting of the mass text: e.g. unisons for the more dogmatical parts, Baroque dotted rhythms at the Nativity (the first coming of the  King of Kings), „rex caelestis†and also at his Passion (whose setting is discretely inspired by folkloric Romanian laments), the „anabasis†gesture at „Gloria in excelsis Deoâ€, „et ascendit in caelisâ€, „in remissionem peccatorum†and the resurrection, a flute trill standing for the Holy Spirit who has come ’like a dove’ at „et incarnatus estâ€, a cross-shaped texture at „crucifixusâ€, and some word-painting (hushed sonorities at „et invisibiliumâ€, anticipations between orchestra and chorus at „et exspecto†etc.). Moreover, certain symbolic roles are assigned to the instrumental groups when alone (the organ represents God the Father and transcendence, the winds and/or solo voices represent God the Son and humanity, and the strings represent the Holy Spirit). „Kyrie†is restrained and soft, besides the powerful chords opening the respective sections of its tripartite, simple structure, and it leans towards Palestrina’s serene modality and counterpoint. „Gloria†begins with a colorful orchestral introduction depicting discretely the shepherds who kept watch over their flocks right before the Nativity, and then gradually the bright revelation. „Credo†has an orchestral introduction as well, but powerful, recurring and based on the beginning of the plainchant hymn „Pange linguaâ€, made famous by Mozart’s last symphony and by other Classical composers. Both „Gloria†and „Credo†end with extended, powerful and elaborate fugues („in gloria Dei Patris†and „et vitam venturi saeculiâ€, respectively) with dramatic modulations and sometimes with enthusiastic syncopations at odds with the words’ accents, a la Stravinsky. The same sections plus „Agnus Dei†end with soft quartal harmonies suggesting transcendent appeasement (similar harmonies appear powerfully at the beginning of „Sanctusâ€). „Judicare†quotes the beginning of the well-known „Dies irae†plainchant tune, and the Consecration between the „Sanctus†and „Benedictus†sections is represented by a contemplative prelude for solo organ, quoting Lutheran chorales, too. Another long orchestral introduction, suggesting the Last Judgment and based on traditional Byzantine hymns, opens „Agnus Deiâ€, which includes another quotation (the famous ’Dresden Amen’ at „qui tollis peccata mundi†and „dona nobis pacemâ€). In the final section, with its refined simplicity, the choral voices enter in descending order, and the „Kyrie eleison†theme is briefly remembered, then it ends softly and peacefully. Total duration: 50 min. Si Je Peut T'Aimer details the emotion of love through various seasons from the fruits of Spring to the requiems of Winter, and the roller-coaster rides throughout. Near the end, desperation starts to show, but as acceptance starts to settle in, the music slows and ends with a cadence signifying that it's time to move on.It can be performed by anyone who'd like to use, I have no set audience in mind. It can be performed by schools if they so wish and can be used to show the various displays of emotion that music can display using different methods of composition. However, I would refrain from any sorts of religious service as this is best served as entertainment. In regards to the choir, stagger breathing is highly recommended for the difficult parts, or whenever feels necessary- which could be after ever dotted half note/ measure, or after every phrase. The dynamics are left to the director or the people who shall perform it. This leaves it to be personalised for each group, and unique to each one's own story; I just gave the template. To note: one can replace the choir with another 2 cellos and 2 violins, if desired. It is also important to note that when playing, the choir is the accompaniment to the piano and strings, and serves to reinforce the story that is being told, not explicitly telling the story itself. .

A setting of a very powerful poem by English poet, Ted Hughes, about the onset of autumn in an English (Yorkshire) garden and the surrounding countryside. It is full of pathos and passion, harmony and dissonance, chaos and peace - just like English weather!This is a very individual and innovative choral setting of Hughes' poem which is, itself, rich in 'meaty' metaphor and colour - and the composer is a vegetarian! It evokes a savage Nature within a savage landscape where humans and animals compete for space and for food. It is October, the fields and woods and gardens of rural Yorkshire are readying themselves for the cold and desolation (and despair) of winter which isn't far away in time. 'A glass, half-filled with wine, left out(side) To the dark heaven all night, by dawn Has dreamed a premonition of ice across its eye as if the ice-age had begun its heave.' That is only two and a half stanzas but you see from these lines that there are veiled threats of (Nature's) violence in the heavy tread of the poet's slowly-building angst over what is happening in the surrounding countryside - and his fear grows, and his awe grows, with every line. There is even fear underlining the very last line: 'And now it is about to start.' Winter is creeping closer and closer towards the house and it will not be pleasant to experience!I have tried to instil a little of this in the music which keeps skidding from consonance to dissonance and back to consonance. Sometimes the dissonance piles up, like snow driven by the wind piles up into deep banks; sometimes the music relaxes into stillness and calm (painted in tonal music) like a crisp, mild late autumn or early winter's day when the sun warms the landscape and life appears bearable, tolerable. I hope this adds to the song's 'charm'. It wasn't easy to write: sometimes the right music was elusive. The music ends with the word 'October' repeated three times, with voices overlapping in a little canon. This conjures up the wistful feelings of the poet as he looks out onto a peaceful scene, soon to be filled with all manner of 'natural violence', while his inner peace will soon be shattered by the mayhem about to be unleashed around him.Setting Ted Hughes is no easy task. It is for choirs and choirmasters to judge if I have succeeded in conveying the 'sense and sensibility' of a classic 20th century English poem.The price is for one copy: please purchase a sufficient number of scores if you intend to perform this work. Where Is JesusInspiration January 1st, 2021 was the start of my official retirement from a wonderful company that I had been employed at for 40+ years, Cirtronics Corporation. Where Is Jesus was my first retirement music so to speak. A 2 measure musical idea came to me in early January. Several weeks later I had the overall structure completed and started inputting the score into my music program. At this point I had no lyrical ideas, however with Easter approaching it occurred to me that the musics dramatic content leaned heavily towards Good Friday, in spirit. As I pondered that, I couldn't help but wonder what the disciples thought when Jesus was taken. Certainly they would question where he was, question what had happened. Thus was born Where is Jesus with the lyrical content asking and then answering. The Music The music is comprised of an A section which begins with the Tenors and Altos singing Where Is Jesus. The choir then responds (in chronological order, as recorded in the Gospels ) with lyrics that describe the brutality that Jesus endured. Here the weight of what has occurred is felt with the lyrics and music evoking great emotion. The B section follows; a retrospective look back sung by the soloist, stating that all had transpired as foretold, or as stated, by Jesus and the prophets. A C section is then introduced which contains the hope then, and the crux now, of our faith deaths chain cannot have its reign, he will rise, he will rise. After a short piano interlude we are returned to the A section, now modulated to a higher key; here the most emotional section of the music is felt with the raw truth of what has happened. He is nailed to the cross, he has died, we are lost. The piece then ends as it started Where Is Jesus, to be answered three days later.

Then the piece ends with a shortened repeat of the restful and calm opening section. This is appropriate for worship services but is really more suitable as a concert piece. This interesting composition creates the impression that the tenors and basses are the shepherds and the sopranos and altos are the angels as it describes the shepherds' journey to find the Christ Child. Full of meaning and beautiful chording, it can easily be performed as a tenor/bass duet using soloists, with other tenors and basses joining in on the tutti sections. The song has several key changes and is mostly in a minor key, except for one section when the angels sing. It can be a real show piece for your tenors and basses, and lends itself to the dramatic acting out of the scenarios. Performance time is @ 5-6 minutes.

Schubert wrote Winterreise in 1827, about a year before his death.The texts are poems by Wilhelm Müller who died in the year that Schubert wrote Winterreise.Schubert found the first twelve poems under the title Wanderlieder von Wilhelm Müller. Die Winterreise in 12 Liedern in an almanack (Urania. Taschenbuch auf das Jahr 1823) published in Leipzig in 1823. It was after he set these, in February 1827, that he discovered the full series of poems in Müller's book of 1824, Poems from the posthumous papers of a travelling horn-player, dedicated to the composer Carl Maria von Weber, as a pledge of his friendship and admiration. Weber died in 1826. On 4 March 1827, Schubert invited a group of friends to his lodgings intending to sing the first group of songs, but he was out when they arrived, and the event was postponed until later in the year, when the full performance was given.This arrangement is made for SATB and can be sung with the original accompaniment by Schubert but there is also a set of parts for Wind-instruments.
