The song’s subject is the birth of Jesus Christ narrated in the Gospel of Luke, specifically the scene in which shepherds outside Bethlehem encounter a multitude of angels singing and praising the newborn child. The lyrics were written by Katharine Lee Bates, and the music was composed by church organist and choirmaster Samuel A. Ward at Grace Episcopal Church in Newark, New Jersey. The two never met. Bates originally wrote the words as a poem, Pikes Peak, first published in the Fourth of July edition of the church periodical The Congregationalist in 1895. At that time, the poem was titled America for publication. Ward had originally written the music, Materna, for the hymn O Mother dear, Jerusalem in 1882, though it was not first published until 1892. Ward's music combined with the Bates poem was first published in 1910 and titled America the Beautiful. The song is one of the most popular of the many U.S. patriotic songs. Eternal Father, Strong to Save is a British hymn traditionally associated with seafarers, and was first written in 1860 by William Whiting (1825—1878), an Anglican churchman from Winchester. According to his recount, Whiting grew up near the ocean and, at the age of thirty-five, had felt his life spared by God when a violent storm nearly claimed the ship he was travelling on. This instilled in him a belief in God's command over the rage and calm of the sea. The music associated with it was written by John B. Dykes (1823—1876), another Anglican clergymen and composer of the music for nearly three hundred hymns. This edition comes in several arrangements for multiple ensembles. At the moment of the first edition it contains the original choir version (with the 1861 lyrics), a voice and piano version, and arrangements for string, cello, trombone, horn, woodwind, brass, and saxophone quartets. The cello, trombone, and horn quartet versions are slightly more elaborated. Additional versions will be created upon request, contact me to know more. This arrangement is dedicated to Martin Smith.

The first translation is by Dirk van Hogendorp, who made it more of a song for the time of suffering.

This is probably one of the most beautiful melodies I have ever heard. This song was popular in 1994, and the lyrics are often misinterpreted. The song is about saying goodbye to an old life on the eve of something new, e.g. wedding, birth etc. It is very popular to perform at weddings and also in recital and always goes down very well indeed. This arrangement features all 4 players on the melody line at some point in the piece.

"Bohemian Rhapsody" is a song composed in 1975 by Freddie Mercury, a member of the British band Queen and included on their album A Night at the Opera. This song has no chorus. In it, Freddie Mercury, Roger Taylor and Brian May sing in the middle, high and low tones respectively. This version was written for instrumental quartet adapted to be faithful to the original version, ideal for intermediate to experienced beginners.
