Published by Rats in the Practice Room (A0.1209506). A 3-movement piano sonata in C# minor, Legends tells the tragic tale of two lovers cursed by the Greek god Poseidon. The first movement depicts the journey of the first lover, a semi-mortal demigod who sets out on a quest to challenge Poseidon for control of the seas. He loses the battle and is cursed to remain lost at sea forever, caught in a vortex with enough strength to swim forever, but not enough to escape. The second movement depicts his mortal human lover, who remains on land. As time continues, the lover grows concerned; they don't know when—or if—their beloved will return. After months have passed, the human decides to go on a quest of their own to find their beloved. The human learns of the demigod's fate, and must make a choice: To live the rest of their life in solitude, separated from the one they love—or to jump into the vortex and doom both of them. The third movement depicts this choice; the human decides to be selfish, and cherish one last moment with the demigod before they both sink to the bottom of the ocean and die in each other's arms.

He has been regarded in his homeland as the father of Czech music. Internationally he is best known for his 1866 opera The Bartered Bride and for the symphonic cycle Má vlast (My Fatherland), which portrays the history, legends and landscape of the composer's native Bohemia. It contains the famous symphonic poem Vltava, also popularly known by its German name Die Moldau (in English, The Moldau).All but a handful of Smetana's compositions before his departure for Gothenburg are piano works. Some of these early pieces have been dismissed by music historian Harold Schonberg as bombastic virtuoso rhetoric derived from Liszt. Under Proksch, however, Smetana acquired more polish, as revealed in works such as the G minor Sonata of 1846 and the E-flat Polka of the same year. The set of Six Characteristic Pieces of 1848 was dedicated to Liszt, who described it as the most outstanding, finely felt and finely finished pieces that have recently come to my note. In this period Smetana planned a cycle of so-called album leaves, short pieces in every major and minor key, after the manner of Chopin's Preludes. The project became somewhat disorganised; in the pieces completed, some keys are repeated while others are unrepresented. Published by Martyn Johnson (A0.1391271). This is my version of Jerome Kern's classic 'The Way You Look Tonight'. One of the most popular jazz standards ever written, Dorothy Fields providing the lyrics. First sung in the film 'Swing Time' by Fred Astaire to Ginger Rogers but covered by such legends as Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennet and more recently by Michael Buble and Phil Collins.My version is a Stride Piano version but owes the tempo and the right hand just a little bit to Erroll Garner and I take it through the 2 keys of Eb major and F major.I haven't included fingering, dynamics or pedal markings as I prefer to leave these to the discretion of the individual pianist as no two piano teachers would ever agree on such things. Please note this is a piano solo and doesn't include notation for the other instruments that feature on my YouTube video. It was written, however, like all my compositions and arrangements, as a piano solo and sounds perfect as such. The left hand, being stride has a very full sound. Any tenths in the left hand can easily be converted to single notes or octaves for those with smaller hands.I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I enjoyed arranging it.

Aurora was composed for Cristian Pastorello, Assistant Professor of Music at Aurora University. The name of the university where Dr. Pastorello teaches was the inspiration for this composition. Further research into the meaning and mythology surrounding Aurora gave rise to the individual movements. I. Goddess of Dawn – The music of this movement reflects a sunrise from its first hint of light to its full-blazed glory. II. Ravens - Spirit Guides – Many North American cultures believed that the Aurora Borealis represented spirits of departed ancestors. Ravens were often thought to be the conveyor of the spirit to the heavens. This movement is a scherzo and trio. The scherzo represents the dancing and playful spirits where the trio has an ethereal quality. III. Sister of the Sun and Moon - The Greeks held that Aurora was the sister of Helios and Seline, the sun and moon respectively, and that she raced across the early morning sky in her multi-colored chariot to alert her siblings to the dawning of a new day. This movement contains colorful harmony. The left hand plays a rising line representing dawn while the right hand represents Aurora racing across the sky through rapid musical motifs. IV. Celestial Battle Between Good and Evil - It is said that many of the early Chinese legends associated with dragons were a result of the Northern Lights. The belief is that the lights were viewed as a celestial battle between good and evil dragons that breathed fire across the firmament. Battle music dominates the first two-thirds of this movement before giving way to the triumph of good over evil.

Hydra is the biggest of the 88 Constellations. Ptolemy, the Greek astronomer catalogued this constellation in the second century. Two Greek legends mention Hydra. The first tells how Heracles (Hercules) fought and killed the nine-headed monstrous predatory snake. The second relates the story of Corvus (the crow) who was commanded to bring water to Apollo, but was distracted, and blamed the water snake for his being late in returning to Apollo with the cup (Crater). In honour of Hydra’s extensive span across the sky, all 88 keys are used. Thus much of the material is chromatic (and also palindromic) but in bars 9, 19 and 29, you can see the approximate shape of the constellation if you join the dots of the noteheads. I have chosen to eschew the use of 8va and 8vb signs, instead opting to show the expanse of all the notes on the keyboard as they appear on the staff. It is easy to play these high and low leger line notes, knowing that they always begin (or end) at the top or bottom of the piano keyboard (i.e. the highest C and the lowest A). It is usually played by the instruments called Gamelan. Bali is an island in Indonesia rich with cultural traditions that are very much rooted in myths and legends. After understanding deeper of the legend of “Kebo Iwaâ€, I was so drawn to the character and the plot that I decided to tell the story in my piano composition. I was able to use different kinds of musical techniques to express different moods. One of them is to apply the Pentatonic ‘Balinese Pelog’ Scale in B flat Major, which represents the majority of the Gamelan sound that is usually transcribed into Western notations. Below is the synopsis the “L’amore di Kebo Iwaâ€. A Once upon a time, in Bali, there was a husband and a wife who dearly wanted to have a baby. They prayed to God for a very long time. Finally, God heard their prayers and blessed them with a baby boy. But there was something special about this baby boy: he was very big- a giant baby. They named him Kebo Iwa. Kebo Iwa grew up with a good heart and became a gentleman. He was a kind hearted giant; he protected the village dearly. One day, the King of Majapahit from Java wanted to conquer Bali. He had heard about Kebo Iwa and knew that his army would lose to Kebo Iwa. B Therefore, the King of Majapahit tricked Kebo Iwa. He invited Kebo Iwa to Java island, promising that he would arrange a wedding for Kebo Iwa to marry his daughter, the beautiful Majapahit princess. Kebo Iwa was so in love with the princess, so he happily travelled to Java island. C After he arrived in Java, the King of Majapahit asked a favour from Kebo Iwa to dig a well, with the reason for it being the dry season. Kebo Iwa then sincerely gave some help and started digging a big, giant well. D However, the King Majapahit never meant to deliver his promise to Kebo Iwa. Instead, the King Majapahit commanded the troops to cover the well with mud and boulders. But when Kebo Iwa realized, it was too late. He was already in the position that was far too deep below - at the bottom of the well. Kebo Iwa then cried loudly and sadly with a broken heart until his last breath. He was buried alive. Soon after that, the Majapahit troops attacked and conquered Bali. E At last, the well was covered and grew a hill of flowers. To this day, the Bali villagers still remember Kebo Iwa as their hero. To honor him, they erected a giant statue of Kebo Iwa in Gianyar, Bali, as a memorial.

This blues was written with the artistry and spirit of the late jazz pianist Mulgrew Miller in mind. Although impossible to truly replicate, I aimed to present a rendering of his soulfulness, advanced harmonic concept, and melodic inventiveness in this composition. I had the distinct pleasure of taking a piano lesson with Mr. Miller as well as interviewing him for Chicago Jazz Magazine. His passing was a major loss for the world of jazz piano. This piece is intended to belong to a forthcoming collection of compositions inspired by jazz piano legends. .
