About the Music Composer: Barbara Ulman Years: 1979 - 2012 In an ear-training class, Professor James Winter suggested using the opening notes of well-known music as an aid in learning the sounds of the intervals. Many students had trouble identifying or singing the intervals. I played the various intervals all over the keyboard, and realized that it would be beneficial to have actual music to practice for each interval. As I wrote and played these pieces, I learned that not only are they useful for ear-training and voice-training, but they are also valuable for training the hands and eyes of a pianist. Each piece in this set of Interval Studies is preceded by a brief phrase beginning with the featured interval. Ear training, and also performance, will be enhanced by practicing the two hands separately until hands and ears are familiar with the interval. After that, play the hands together and listen for the intervals as you play the music.

When using the intervals of a 4th and a tritone as material for a non-jazz piece, one has to be careful not to make the music sound like jazz, as this particular interval set comprises the essential dominant chord voicing for most jazz pianists. G-C#-F#, for instance, as a representation of A13 or A7. So, this piece uses complete symmetry, mirroring and topographically equivalent fingerings throughout, so as to avoid this problem. Admittedly, the spellings are not easy to decipher. They often use the flatted form of a note in one clef, and the sharped form of that same musical alphabet letter in the other. This is to avoid endless naturals, as the half-step motion, so typical of movement between 4ths and tritones, necessitates. Arpeggiated figures, block chords, and even some delicious chimes at the close make this piece more than a mere display of intervallic and pianistic options. It has a feeling all its own, as the sequential chromatic meandering up from the lower end of the keyboard to the upper shows each color in turn, all the while keeping to the strict rules that these etudes were constructed under.This is the last of the groups of two interval pieces. The traditional musical element that uses both these intervals is the octotonic or diminished scale. So, this material figures prominently in the first section, accompanied by alternating major and minor sevenths. The piece uses mirrored and symmetrical passages in 7ths next, followed by the opposite smaller intervals. Rolled mirrored clusters, symmetrical open chords, every possibility is explored here, each aspect showing its own identity. The intervallic unity gives the piece, and ALL the pieces in this series, a continuity that binds the disparate pianistic applications together into unified and identifiable musics. The piano can be made to sound many ways, smooth, gleaming bright, jangling and rambunctious, even like a drum with keys. I hope to have covered most of these aspects of the pianistic touch in this set of etudes. The final item uses each interval in turn, then paired with the next-largest unit, moving through the entire group. Then, the right hand moves through all of them with a pedal point, followed by a similar exposition in the left. Arpeggios and chords ring out at the end, in a similar fashion to the summation that is the final Valse in Ravel Noble and Sentimental set. All the gestures are shaped the same, until the penultimate segment, with the ONLY deviation from absolute topographical mirroring, which is then followed by a triplet figure in contrary motion, both within and between each line. INTERVALS : 24 Works for Piano by Julie MandelA musician friend of mine once told me that her favorite songs were those that began with the jump of an octave. Like Somewhere Over The Rainbow. It got me to thinking about how the first two notes of any piece of music really set up what will follow. That octave jump, that interval, is only one of twenty-four possible intervals in a one-octave scale. That is to say, there are twenty-four different intervals with which to begin a piece of music. I have written these twenty-four pieces with the idea of having the first two notes of each of them start with a different interval.I’m delighted that pianists are starting to perform them in concert, and all 24 have been recorded by Hadassah Guttmann.
