When Andrea Bates, executive director of the Brockton Symphony Orchestra, first told me that the Brockton Symphony had commissioned me to write a new work to be premiered in 2003-2004, I immediately thought that since its music director, Jonathan Cohler, is a marvelous clarinetist I would be most attracted to the idea of writing a clarinet concerto for the occasion. Both Andrea and Jonathan were very receptive and enthusiastic about my idea. Andrea also told me that the commissioned work should somehow bring to attention the diverse cultures of the recent immigrants that have settled in the city of Brockton. So in the spring of 2003 I came down to Brockton for a meeting to which Andrea had invited representative members of these new communities. Three showed up: Maria Evora-Rosa, Rick Marrero and Fred Fontaine. Andrea had asked them to bring recordings of the music from their countries for me to listen to. There were CDs of very exciting and fun music from Cape Verde, Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Haiti. After spending months listening to the music from these countries, all of them islands in the Atlantic or the Caribbean, I slowly began to get a sense of the beauty and the magic of the musical style and language of each place, each individual island. The end result is a three-movement work for clarinet and orchestra. Unlike the traditional Concerto form which is Fast-Slow-Fast, this work begins with something slow. A fast number follows as a second movement; and then, after a short, slow interlude, another fast number appears. The first movement is my adaptation of the morna of Cape Verde – slow, melancholy and sad. The diva of the morna is Cesaria Evora. Her singing brings to mind a fusion between the African blues and the Portuguese fado. The second movement is my take on the merengue as performed by the inimitable Xavier Cugat. It is dance music through and through!!! The third movement is also a dance number: the ever-popular music from Haiti, the reggae. And in order to give some contrast between the two dance numbers, I added a slow chorale for clarinet and strings that serves as a prelude before the dancing begins in the final movement. I envision the chorale as a little church music before the people go out and dance the night away. Throughout the entire work, the solo clarinet is the principal voice … singing, dancing, and cavorting!!! Gotta dance!!! Have fun and enjoy the music!!! I surely did as I was working on it ….

About the piece'To The Moon' takes inspiration from the Earth's Moon, the beauty andmajesty of the celestial body and all it encompasses. It also charts the energy and excitement surrounding the space race and the ultimate goal to get to the Moon! The piece helps to explore extended tonalities and considers a different approach to Orchestral writing and performance choreography.This piece can be performed by any number of performers, ideally, traditional Orchestral numbers work well but experimentation with larger/fewer numbers on various parts within the different 'ensembles' can produce exciting results.Performance directionsThe ideal performing conditions for this piece are that the orchestra are split into 4 'ensembles' as indicated in the score. Each ensemble is grouped in a way that means all ensembles are pointing to the centre (see diagram 1 below). The audience should similarly be positioned around the room in a circle behinf each of the ensembles. Therefore, an ideal focal point for this performance would be a visual representation of the Moon in the centre of the room, ideally lit in some way. Representations of the Moon may take the form of a 3D lit representation (potentially made, perhaps a local Art project) or a projected representation onto the floor of the performance space. TheMoon should be of sufficient size as to not be lost in the space and careful planning should be done to ensure optimal visual effect. The role of the conductor during the performance ideally would be minimal, perhaps sat in one of the ensembles providing minimal direction. However, due to the capabilities of the performers, the conductor may have to take a more active role in the performance. The author's intent was to work on melodic-harmonic-rhythmic materials always attributable to the Fibonacci numerical series, hence, as a consequence, the choice of the title, Nautilus, finding the natural expression in the artistic perfection of said shell of the logarithmic spiral to which the golden section is applied.The form of symphonic movement that emerged has a rhapsodic flowThe choice of the sounds of the harmonic field of the first part (bar 0-50) is therefore based on the numerical series (based on a scale of 10 sounds), tracing each sound of the scale to a number from 0 to 9 and making them correspond to the numbers of the series of Fibonacci from 1 to 267,914,296.The second part (bars 51-64) is based on a harmonic field of 9 sounds which, when superimposed, generate 9 triads formed by superimposed 4ths which are used at a distance of 2, 3 or 5 beats (series of F. , from the 3rd to the 6th number). In this section, isorhythmy is used according to groupings of values ​​that can be numerically traced back to the series.A short third part (bars 65-80) is inserted as an expressive moment: it is based on a scale of 7 sounds (spaced proportionally from each other according to the logarithmic spiral: from the 1/4 tone to the major 3rd).In the next and final section the isorhythmic part is resumed with small changes in the closing coda.

The work has developed from a highly individualized harmonic language that establishes its own laws independent from and additional to conventional harmonic practice. The same is true of the work’s unusual tonality. Central to this approach is the use of dodecaphonic principles in both the melodic and harmonic content. The intent here is to incorporate Schoenberg’s theoretical model of tone rows in an inclusive way, so that it is part of the work’s musical language and an additional tool in structuring and developing ideas. As a result the work remains tonal, albeit inhabiting a distinct and exotic aural landscape.There is no rigid adherence to conventional forms or methods of symphonic development, rather the work takes an entirely eccentric and highly individual approach. Whilst this is the ‘spark’ or heart of the work there is still an intention to create music instead of noise. Discords are therefore used as elsewhere in my more conventionally tonal works; as a natural consequence of the work itself instead of a forced snub at tonal music.

The title is a popular expression, which is used as the date of a future occurrence that will never come to pass. In the case of the song, the 12th of Never is given as the date on which the singer will stop loving his beloved, thus indicating that he will always love her. Mathis initially disliked the song, which was released as the flip side to his number 1 hit single Chances Are. It was written by Jerry Livingston and Paul Francis Webster, the tune (except for the bridge) being adapted from The Riddle Song (also known as I Gave My Love a Cherry), an old English folk song. Mathis's original version reached number 9 on what is now called the Billboard Hot 100 in the USA in 1957. A version by Cliff Richard was released in 1964 and reached number 8 in the UK. Donny Osmond's version, produced by Mike Curb and Don Costa, was his second number 1 single in the UK, spending a single week at the top of the UK Singles Chart in March 1973. In the U.S. it peaked at number 8.

Taking two weeks to dislodge its predecessor, I Want to Hold Your Hand stayed at number one for five weeks and remained in the UK top 50 for 21 weeks in total.It was also the group's first American number-one hit, entering the Billboard Hot 100 chart on 18 January 1964 at number 45 and starting the British Invasion of the American music industry. By 1 February it topped the Hot 100, and stayed there for seven weeks before being replaced by She Loves You.
