The composition 4 Prague Poems of Altered Minds for a classical string quartet (two violins, viola, cello) and electronics and has been written by an award wining composer Elia Cmiral. The composition is in traditional four movements, it can be performed together with electronic pre-recorded material or as an option together with film produced and directed by Elia Cmiral. The composition expresses the feeling of hopelessness and despair by the breakdowns of values in our societies, reflects the change in the human minds in a global crisis exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Composition has started during the COVID-19 pandemic and was completed last year (2021) premiered live with the film in Prague, Czech Republic by a prime string ensemble Epoque Quartet that also played the whole piece in the film. The visual part of the project has emotional attachment to the city of Prague, each movement brings poetic visions of the city, raising the questions - Did we really lose ourselves? Is humanity going to destroy itself with its endless and arrogant greed? Where are we heading? After three dark movements we find in the last movement a hope in human creativity, love and finding a light in the end of the dark tunnel. Movement I – Desolated City and its Living Shadows (8 min), fast and rhythmical Movement II - Tears of a Dark River (10 min), slow and emotional Movement II - Anguish and Rage (4 min), extremely fast and dissonant Movement IV - Faith in Hope (6 min), medium tempo, rather emotional Performing Options: Option 1. Played with electronics guided with a click track Option 2. It is not a coincidence that many composers seem to have written some of their most important and meaningful works for the string quartet. I grew up listening to string quartets, especially those by Beethoven and Bartók, and those works have had a tremendous impact on what I am as a composer, musician and as a human being. In many of my works one can see some sort of a journey from darkness toward the light, in various forms. In the case of my String Quartet this journey is exceptionally arduous. There is an element of hope in some sections of the third movement, but the hope it offers is more of an otherworldly nature. In the beginning of the fourth movement the very dramatic elements of the beginning of the quartet return. Just at the point, when the listener thinks that the darker elements will ultimately prevail, the music reaches an important turning point. Through a heroic, dissonant struggle it reaches the finale, which is full of ecstasy and instrumental joy. I have given the finale, along with the metronome marking, the indication Con fuoco all’Ungharese - all this of course as a homage to the great Hungarian master, one of my greatest musical heroes already since the very early days of my life. (Olli Mustonen).

So it is that by becoming an integral part of the music, our feet are guided 'into the way of peace'. In Luke chapter 1, both Maria and Zechariah are carried away, body and soul, in hymns of thanksgiving. They let God´s melody resound in their bodies. Ignatius, one of the Early Fathers of the Church, might have drawn his inspiration from them when he wrote to the Christians of Ephesus around the year 100, Let God´s melody resound in you. The melody of our life is a single voice within God´s great melody; an everlasting celestial melody, in which we join together as integral parts - with time, we are gradually shown which chords we are given to touch and which chords to form with one another. God´s inextinguishable melody has an infinite galaxy of variations. As you would know, a variation is rooted but limitless. At our christening, God gives us a variation - an inextinguishable variation because of his promise, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. (Matthew 28, 20). Deeply rooted as we are, God leads us through. He calls us to Life out of His Eternity, He lets his melody reverberate in us and finally calls us back, when we die, to His everlasting future. The theme of this piece is the idea of being lost at sea. The slow ground bass starts, the churning of the dark waves against the side of the ship. The sky and sea are the same type of dark, not a star or light can be seen anywhere above or below. On deck the crew wait for an order, though they are scared, there’s nothing they can do. They cannot make the star appear, and they cannot give direction without certainty that they’re going in the right direction. The waves turn and grow and often push the ship around, making everyone nervous, if they completely get turned they could get lost. The voices of the instruments trade places and come in and out of each other. Dancing around each other making a beautiful eerie melody. At the very end of the piece, the star is found. The clouds move and the moons bright light shines down on the weary travelers and they find hope again.

It is one of my favourite songs and I really loved arranging this one! The video shows my arrangement of Mercy for String Quartet but without voice, to give you an idea. Many things about it are similar to this version for voice and quartet but the voice carries the tune so it is not so demanding for the first violin. There are some excerpts to listen to in the 30 second sample of the quartet with my daughter singing. This is more difficult to play than some of my other arrangements as it is very syncopated and it is important to feel the stresses on the off beats. As far as possible I have written these as down bows which I hope will help the players to lean into the groove! The pizzicato baseline will need to be prominent, but the inner parts very light, and played near the end of the bow so that the singer can be heard. I have added lyrics to some of the lines to help with the rhythms. I hope you have as much fun playing this one as I did arranging it. I would say that the syncopation probably calls for advanced string players as it is vital to keep the timing steady if the singer is to survive such a big sing with so few opportunities to breathe! However, there must be many vocalists who would love to try this as a party piece for a christmas concert. I am thinking of sixth formers or performing arts college students, or professional players for christmas event and weddings. If you have a good local singer, it could work with a string orchestra too. The triplets need to be very light and passed effortlessly between the players so that the texture is thin but rhythmically vibrant. Cellists can simplify bar 74 by playing just the notes on each beat as crotchets. The opening will need a lot of rehearsal as the quartet /orchestra need to know what the singer will do. I have put some of the lyrics into the score to help with this. I hope you enjoy performing this as much as we did! I am transcribing it for quartet without a vocalist too which could easily then be tackled by string players of Grade 5 ABRSM. Watch this space!

It is amazing that the work was conceived thirty years ago!!! Originally, it was just a 32-bar jazz tune I performed every Sunday night with the Moon Unit at the 1369 Jazz Club in Cambridge, Massachusetts, 1980-1984. The string quartet version, although written for the Kronos Quartet, was premiered at Concert X by the Composers in Red Sneakers in Sanders Theater, Cambridge, Massachusetts, on July 21, 1983. The Red Sneakers String Quartet comprised of Thal Aylward, Melissa Howe, Frank Grimes and Sandy Kiefer. Richard Buell reported in the Boston Globe a few days later that the doleful Morango ... almost a tango got a lot of mileage out of a stubborn, almost unchanging cello line and the elaborations above it. The original program note read, Last summer in Vermont I met Gustavo Moretto, an Argentine composer, who taught me the finer and more beautiful aspects of the Tango. In my modest way, as someone looking in from the outside, I created Morango ... almost a tango - a bastardized version of the 'real thing.' Morango ... is also intrinsically connected to Kate Moran, a sometimes painter ... to whom it is dedicated. The work is played con sordino throughout. I hope the sirens next door don't intrude too much. But then again, John Cage would be delighted. Eventually, the Kronos got around to performing it on tour in Europe in 1986. When they played it as an encore in Italy at the American Academy in Rome, Mya Tannenbaum of the Corriere Della Sera wrote, Non sono mancati i bis. Un richiamo al sex appeal del vecchio tango da parte di un giovane «premio Roma», Tom Lee. Soon after, back in the States, the Kronos performed it at the Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York. John Rockwell wrote in the New York Times, ... a soulfully beautiful score by Thomas Oboe Lee. Three months later the Kronos recorded it on their Nonesuch CD, White Man Sleeps. Many other string quartets, both here and abroad, have since added the work to their repertory. The Lydian String Quartet, especially, have taken the work on their concert tours in the United States, Europe and the former Soviet Union. It appears on a CD recorded by the Lyds in Moscow on MCA Classics. As interest in the work grew, other ensembles have requested arrangements of Morango ... There are now three other versions of the work: one for big band jazz ensemble by Ken Schaphorst, another for string orchestra commissioned by Aram Gharabekian and Sinfonova, and the third for violin and piano commissioned by the Paul Chou-Paul Salerni Duo. Of the string orchestra version, Richard Dyer of the Boston Globe wrote, Lee's piece, Morango ... almost a tango, is a transcription of atmospheric and elegant music originally composed for string quartet; it is as sultry as Faith Domergue in a film noir, and it steams. It is a much loved song, very well received by the critics and public alike, and hugely popular at weddings. As well as this arrangement for string quartet, I also have an arrangement on Sheet Music Plus, for female singer and string quartet backing. The Quartet version can be found on my Skinny Black Dogs Youtube Channel, by typing in ‘Romeo and Juliet, Kissing You’. The parts are not difficult to play, and the key is easy for strings. As usual, the first violin has the hardest part in trying to sustain the slow melody with a good vibrato, but my bowing is just a guide, and less experienced players can easily change the bow more often. There is some double stopping, in order to get all the necessary notes into those beautiful chords which thickens the texture, but almost all of it has an open string as one of the notes. There is a tricky part for cello at Bar 28, but with a little help from a good teacher, I’m sure that it is not impossible. The cellist in my Youtube recording plays it very lightly, and it could also be done in thumb position, played an octave lower, or simplified. There is also a cello solo in fourth position at bar 14 including the high harmonic A. There needs to be room for some rubato in the song and the lead needs to be taken from whomever has the tune! Hope you enjoy playing this song! It was a lot of fun to arrange!

New Zealand-based music teacher and folk music compiler Neil Colquhoun claimed to have collected the song around 1966 from one F. R. Woods. Woods, who was in his 80s at the time, had allegedly heard the song from his uncle. it was attributed to one D.H. Rogers. It has been speculated that Rogers was the uncle of Woods and that Rogers had worked as a teenage pirate or shore whaler in the early-to-mid 19th century, composing this and another song in his later years and eventually passing them on to his nephew as an old man. Nathan Evers recorded the work in 2021 during the COVID pandemic and it became a viral sensation with house-bound Tik-Tokers sparking a whole re-introduction of sea shanties in what was termed Shanty-Tok. This string quartet arrangement gives all instruments a chance at the melody, and adds the affectation of a foot-stomp and a shout at the ends of verses. The history of whaling in New Zealand stretches from the late eighteenth century to 1965. In 1831, the British-born Weller brothers Edward, George, and Joseph, who had emigrated to Sydney in 1829, founded a whaling station at Otakou near modern Dunedin in the South Island of New Zealand, seventeen years before Dunedin was established. The Weller brothers had on their voyage to New Zealand brought in the 'Lucy Ann' (the Weller brothers' barque) a good deal of rum and a good deal of gunpowder. From 1833, the Weller brothers sold provisions to whalers in New Zealand from their base at Otakou, which they had named Otago in approximation of the local MÄori pronunciation. The song's lyrics describe a whaling ship called the Billy o' Tea [Note: a billy is a pot in which water is boiled to make tea or coffee] and its hunt for a right whale. The song describes how the ship's crew hope for a wellerman to arrive and bring them supplies of luxuries. According to the song's listing on the website New Zealandfolk Song, the workers at these bay-whaling stations (shore whalers) were not paid wages, they were paid in slops (ready made clothing), spirits and tobacco. The chorus continues with the crew singing of their confidence that the tonguin' will be the last step of their plight. Tonguing in this context refers to the practice of cutting strips of whale blubber to render into oil. Subsequent verses detail the captain's determination to bring in the whale in question, even as time passes and the quartet of whaling boats is lost in the fight. In the last verse, the narrator conveys how the Billy o' Tea is still considered locked in an ongoing struggle with the whale, with the wellerman making his regular call to strengthen the captain and crew.
