Arranged wind quintet Mvt III Molto vivace The String Quartet in F major, Op. 96, nicknamed the American Quartet, is the 12th string quartet composed by AntonÃn Dvořák. It was written in 1893, during Dvořák's time in the United States of America. The quartet is one of the most popular in the chamber music repertoire. For the London premiere of his New World symphony, Dvořák wrote: As to my opinion I think that the influence of this country (it means the folk songs)) is to be seen, and that this and all other works (written in America) differ very much from my other works as well as in colour as in character,. A characteristic, unifying element throughout the quartet is the use of the pentatonic scale. This scale gives the whole quartet its open, simple character, a character that is frequently identified with American folk music. However, the pentatonic scale is common in many ethnic musics worldwide, and Dvořák had composed pentatonic music, being familiar with such Slavonic folk music examples, before coming to America Specific American influences have been doubted: In fact the only American thing about the work is that it was written there, writes Paul Griffiths.[21] The specific American qualities of the so-called American Quartet are not easily identifiable, writes Lucy Miller, ...Better to look upon the subtitle as simply one assigned because of its composition during Dvořák's American tour.

I have NOT simply copied the string parts across to the winds, as other have done. Rather, I have arranged the piece as though it had been written for wind quintet, so have given the horn repeated notes , in the same way as the slow movement of the slow movement Dvorak's wind serenade., and used the horn to sustain. Some of the arpeggio figures remain, but in a simplified form.and are shared between clarinet and bassoon.

Flute, Oboe, Clarinet in Bb, Bassoon, Horn in F Individual parts can be used for rehearsal. In performance the combined score/part can be used - each wind quintet instrument plays as written, with the bassoon playing as if with a bass clef, the others as if with a treble clef. Eb and alto clef parts (based on the horn in F) are also available to enable inclusion, in a larger ensemble, of alto saxophone, tenor horn, viola. Programme Note I wanted to write a piece that took inspiration from one aspect of the political process. The starting point was a quote from William Burke (1729-97): All government, indeed every human benefit and enjoyment, every virtue, and every prudent act, is founded on compromise and barter. [Speech on Conciliation with America, 1775] This quote did not in itself suggest to me all that was required, and so I tried to suggest the ideas of 'SpeakYour Mind' and 'Trust' in the other two sections. The music is presented as a combined score/part and I felt that in this context the idea of musicians playing within a single 'forum' would have an extra resonance. The music is presented on two sides of a single page, and I deliberately preceded the third section 'Trust' with the instruction 'turn over...'. In this way I hope to evoke the idea of 'turning over a new leaf'.

The lyrics of the song were inspired by the 1955 novel 'The Inheritors' by William Golding and focuses on a character named the Beast who leaves his own kingdom and enters the realm of humans by whom he is captured. His captors release him in return for leading them to his world. However, just as they see what appears to be a spire of gold, they find that the Beast has disappeared, though they do hear his voice.

The song incorporates elements from pop rock music; it also features a music hall-inspired piano line that recurs throughout the piece, as well as a brass section. His family moved to Paris, after Metz and part of Lorraine were annexed to Germany in 1871 following the Franco-Prussian War. He studied at the Paris Conservatoire, gaining first prizes for solfège, piano, organ, counterpoint and fugue. He won the French Prix de Rome in 1882, with his cantata Edith. His teachers included Antoine François Marmontel, Albert Lavignac, Émile Durand, César Franck (for the organ) and Jules Massenet (for composition).He succeeded César Franck as organist at Sainte-Clotilde Basilica in Paris from 1890 to 1898. He himself was succeeded by another distinguished Franck pupil, Charles Tournemire. Associated for many years with Édouard Colonne's concert series, the Concerts Colonne, from 1903, Pierné became chief conductor of this series in 1910.His most notable early performance was the world premiere of Igor Stravinsky's ballet The Firebird, at the Ballets Russes, Paris, on 25 June 1910. He remained in the post until 1933 (when Paul Paray took over his duties).
