Composed at the age of 18, this set of four preludes for piano is dedicated to the Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich. Opening with a march-like motif, the music shifts drastically between piercing screams of sound and quiet melancholy – reflecting Shostakovich’s tumultuous life under the dictatorship of Joseph Stalin. The second prelude opens with youthful energy which then descends into a mysterious ostinato. This builds into a thundering finish where the music shatters into a myriad of echoing fragments. Prelude No. 3 opens with calmness and serenity. The simple repeating motif grows into an agonizing climax, immediately followed by Shostakovich’s signature phrase: DSCH (D Eb C B). This causes a return back to the same peaceful opening – as if reflecting back on the past. The final prelude is a mix of incredible energy and jest, rounding out the set with a boisterous ending. Skill level: Advanced Intermediate. 14 pages.

Claude Debussy’s two sets of Préludes for piano have always been among my favorites and I have selected these three from Livre 1 because they work well on low instruments. The first and third preludes can be played on four bassoons, but the second requires the fourth player to switch to contrabassoon, although an alternative bassoon part is included. If you are unfamiliar with the Préludes, I suggest you listen to some recordings first to get an idea of what these pieces are all about. You can then perhaps introduce your own ideas. Debussy specified the very slow tempo for Footprints…, but the other tempos are just my suggestions. Likewise, the translations of the less familiar French terms are mine, and you may wish to rethink them.

Bach completed the 24 preludes and fugues that make up the first book of the Well-Tempered Clavier in 1722 in Cöthen, where much of his other important instrumentalchamber music was written. The twenty-four segments go through all of the major and minor keys, with an prelude which explores a single texture or figuration and a contrasting fugue in either 2, 3, 4 or 5 voices. In this arrangement, the different voices are either shared by the four instruments or, in the case of the five voices of the Fugue in Bb minor, implied through arpeggios in the alto and tenor voices. Care must be taken to make these implied chordssound through discretely sustaining these voices through resonance.The preludes are generally in relatively free improvisatory forms which explore different types of baroque devises, including italianate keyboard figuration, “arioso†ornamented melodies with ostinato accompaniments, and more abstract forms. Two of the preludes are especially notable: the stately harmonic progression of the First prelude in C major, one of Bach’s most well-known works, and the gigantic prelude and double fugue of the Eb Major prelude.The fugues represent an exploration of all styles, ranging from the Ricacare in the Fugue no. 4 in c# minor and the use of augmentation, canon and inversion in no. 8 in Eb minor.

As part of a campaign to enrich the woodwind quintet repertoire, Kaplan has arranged for woodwind quintet the six preludes and fugues for string trio by Mozart (based on fugues, and some preludes, by J.S. and W.F. Bach, with the addition of four original preludes by Mozart). Around 1782 (as recounted by Mozart in a letter to his father), Mozart used to attend Sunday musicales at the home of Baron van Swieten, who required Bach and Handel to be played by all. Presumably it was to comply with the Baron's wishes that Mozart created these arrangements plus original preludes. The arranger surmises that Mozart's immersion in Bachian counterpoint influenced his own works, which increasingly featured interesting, elaborate, musically and emotionally exciting fugues (such as those in the K.387 string quartet, the Jupiter Symphony, and the Requiem). Given Mozart's genius, it is not all surprising that the fugues he selected are all of great musical interest.Note that in arranging string music for woodwinds, one often finds the English Horn better suited to the tessitura than the oboe. The main challenge is to share the string parts among the wind instruments in such a way as to permit the players to breathe. This the arranger has done, but welcomes feedback from players.

These preludes and fugues are based on the D.F.G. codes related to number series. They are not serial but move through various tonal centres creating a variety and vibrancy of piano sonority. They are dedicated to American concert pianist Beth Levin as a thank you for her premiere with Mezzo Soprano Emiley Howard of my Housman settings for Mezzo Soprano and Piano in 2011 They are the first volume of a series of four volumes of Preludes and Fugues on the DFG codes planned for 2014-15. It has been suggested that the inspiration for the title could have stemmed from a painting depicting a snowy landscape. This was an extremely popular backdrop among Impressionist artist like Claude Monet or Alfred Sisley; the latter painted Snow at Louveciennes.No 12 Minstrels This is the final prelude of Book One.  Debussy delivers a surprising and humorous gem that is a tribute to the performing minstrel groups which started to appear in Europe around 1900. The music of the minstrels included many contemporary jazz elements such as ragtime and blues, rhythms which were incorporated into the music of quite a few fascinated European composers. This prelude cleverly captures the frenzy of the quick-change minstrel act and their rhythmic excitement, opening with a banjo-like theme supported by uncharacteristically blatant dominant to tonic pedals in G Major. We also hear a brief sentimental song and a recurrent drum theme before the prelude comes to a satisfying close with a hymn- like plagal cadence.

It is the second piece in a set of twelve préludes published in 1910. The title of the piece may be translated to English as either veils or sails; both meanings can be connected to the musical structure. Except for some mild, localized chromaticism and a short pentatonic passage, the entire piece uses the whole tone scale. I have taken some liberties with the arpeggios in the 2nd half of the piece and also ignored the grace notes. For something different, try this piece. (Treat the tempo as 4/8 rather than 2/4 i.e. count it in 4. Well worth the challenge! VI. Des pas sur la neige (Footprints in the snow): very atmospheric wintry feel!
