The second of the three Minimalist tributes to French composers takes some of Ravel's favorite chords, the minor 6/9 chord, the augmented major 7th, and a fascinating hybrid chord at the outer reaches of tonality that he used in the Valses Noble et Sentimentales, a minor/major 7th chord, but with an augmented fifth, spelled here as C-D# Ab-B, even though a more proper spelling should be C-Eb-G#-B. The chord has been divided into two 6ths, and is clearer to read and play in this spelling. My apologies to Lucien Garban, Ravel's editor, who would not have let him make this concession to convenience! So, arpeggiated figures in the treble accompany deep octaves in the bass in the opening and closing sections. This minor-major/augmented chord is used in the middle section, with a diminished chord slowly played out in octaves: a nod to Ravel's oft-used octotonic or diminished scale writing. Approx running time is just under 5 mins. Pedaling is clearly indicated throughout. Hand-crossing only at the finale. MBB.

Wesley Suite The world is my parish, a set of four contrasting pieces for organ, is a tribute to John and Charles Wesley, 18th century clergymen and co-founders of the Methodist Church. The title Wondering Soul is a reference to the first line of the Wesleys’ Conversion Hymn, Where shall my wondering soul begin? which was written after John Wesley’s Aldersgate Street experience in which he felt his heart was strangely warmed. Wesley’s Gallop paints a musical picture of John Wesley riding on horseback around the towns and villages of England, preaching the Gospel in churches, halls, fields, cottages and chapels. Chapel Prayer is a reflective piece referring to Wesley’s Chapel in City Road, London, a Methodist Church built under the direction of John Wesley. The word Liberty in the title of Liberty Fanfare refers to John Wesley’s advocacy for the abolition of slavery. He wrote, Liberty is the right of every human creature. The piece contains musical references to two well-known hymns – (i) Amazing Grace, the words of which were written by his fellow abolitionist, friend and mentor, John Newton, as well as (ii) And can it be, the words of which were written by Charles Wesley.

Published by EAMUSIC (A0.1283414). Obelisk is a work that was built as a response to the atrocious events happening in the war between Russia and Ukraine. As a composer who was born in Ukraine, I felt very deeply for the hardships of the people of my country and this work is a direct emotional response to the images I see and stories I hear. The central part of the work features pre-recorded interviews with some of the Ukrainian civilians telling their harrowing stories of loss, struggles, and fight for survival.  When I was a child, my parents made the difficult decision to leave the country due to the beginning of another war Russia’s Putin started in Chechnya and my parents knew - one day he would be coming for Ukraine. As someone who immigrated to Canada at a young age, I experienced all the difficulties associated with finding new life in a new country. I saw the struggles of my parents and now I see the struggles being experienced by people fleeing Ukraine.  Throughout the work you will hear the sonic accompaniment to the pain and suffering that Ukrainians undergo on daily basis, you will hear their voices and see images of the brutality committed against the people of Ukraine. This is a heavy work to experience, but as an artist I feel it is only appropriate to raise awareness around the issue and show the people the horrors going on in the world.    The title of the work was inspired by the famous monument erected in 2001 to mark the occasion of the 10thanniversary of Ukraine’s Independence from the Soviet Union. At that point it appropriately replaced the monument of Vladimir Lenin. Tribute to the Trail of Tears is an original SATB choir song commemorating my Choctaw heritage. When I wrote this song, I wanted to look at the Trail of Tears from the Choctaws' eyes. I did this by emphasizing the contrast between their anger with the shouting taken from a Choctaw war chant and hope with a Choctaw Sun Prayer (the sun is an important figure of hope in Choctaw spirituality), their English traditions forced upon them and their true Choctaw nature, and the betrayal of a government that was supposed to protect them. This song is designed to be slow and relaxed (~70bpm for the first part and ~85bpm for the piu mosso), with the bends representing relaxed glissandos in the voice. The last three chords are meant to be sensitive and should be taken very slowly. Keep in mind that this piece should not only be meaningful but convey the emotions to spread the Native awareness that is so direly needed in America.

She was 91 and had been poorly with many different illnesses for the previous 6 months, so we knew it was coming. But the timing and unfathomable sadness of her death, together with the start of a worldwide pandemic, little did I know it at the time, was to bring forth from me a tsunami of music the likes of which I hadn’t written for many years. A set of six solo studies for various members of the clarinet family came first, written between March 20th and April 20th. As I wrote them they were orchestrating themselves in my head and forming something else as well. That “something else†grew and grew, as the Six Studies intertwined themselves around each other and expanded together, joining forces with two brand new themes to form what soon was to become an immense orchestral work. The title was easy. Glastry is a tiny district in the middle of the Co.Down countryside of Northern Ireland, where my Mum was born and brought up. And Pearl was her name. Her full name was actually Margaret Mary Ward (eventually to become Denny when she married my Dad, Colum Denny, from Belfast), but everyone always called her Pearl. The nickname was bestowed upon her just after she was born on February 28th 1929 and stuck ever since.The Glastry Pearl is a tribute to my Mum and the great and mighty person she was to me and all who knew her. It employs at least one theme or motif from each of the Six Studies For Various Solo Clarinets and uses them throughout the work in the from of Leitmotifs. It was only when the work was nearing completion that I began to wonder how to describe it. Freddy Naftel, a good composer friend of mine, suggested that Tone Poem was a fitting description and I immediately agreed. The music itself is completely tonal and highly Romantic, yet also peppered with exciting contemporary disonance. I believe it to be a good, and hopefully fun, challenge to symphony orchestras, both professional and high standard amateur alike. It offers everything from the the somber opening to the hilarious and wildly energetic central Waltz, to the glorious soaring final section, so plenty of variety to please many palates.
