Everything evolves out of an initial phrase and quickly transforms into new shapes and forms as the piece continues. Point of Origin is an example of post-tonal triadicism in that it does not adhere to traditional tonal rules and yet makes consistent use of triadic harmonies. The resulting sound is one that is familiar to most listeners and yet still provides unexpected twists and turns. Southwest Sunrise Trumpet Solo Eddie Lewis and Alex Lewis MTR P111 4137 Southwest Sunrise is a trumpet solo for beginner trumpet students that has a more complicated piano part. I often get requests for music for students of different skill levels. And in fact, that’s what of my strengths as a writer, is that I can blend parts across skill levels that way. In this case, Alex and I were striving for something that would be interesting for the pianist, but not overly challenging for the beginner trumpet student. The Process The inspiration for this piece came to me on a morning walk in Chandler, Arizona. Chandler is a suburb of Phoenix. I was walking east, into the rising sun. It was a very simple melody. It was a very simple blues melody that I immediately recognized as something that would work in our series for beginner trumpet students. This was during a time when my son, Alex, and I were already collaborating on some other projects. For this piece, I gave Alex the melody and gave him a general description of what I was hearing. Then I gave him his space to create what sounded good to him. The next stage was me editing some of his creativity. At this point we went back and forth on a few issues until we agreed on the final results. SKILL LEVEL The skill level for Southwest Sunrise is Trumpet Pioneer (we don’t have skill levels for piano parts yet on this website). Trumpet Pioner is the first of seven levels in our system. These are absolute beginners who have only been playing the trumpet for a few months. Our Trumpet Pioneer level limits the range to C in the staff. We also limit rhythms to nothing smaller than quarter-notes, and key signatures are limited to one flat or sharp. Practice Recommendations While it is obvious and I don’t normally list it as a point in this practice recommendations, but the rhythms are very different between the trumpet part and the trumpet part. So it is even MORE important to spend time listening to the composition long before you begin practicing it. As I said, this is a good habit for working on all performance pieces. There is research that proves that students learn their music best when they recognize their mistakes soonest. When you listen to the music repeatedly before you practice, it goes a long way towards helping you recognize your mistakes. This is one of the most important reasons for listening, but there are others that I won’t go into here. Assuming the pianist is far more advanced than the trumpeter, the pianist should assume a patient, educational role.

The interplay between the piano and the voice is crafted to reflect the paradoxical imagery of the poem. The music moves through moments of tension and release, mirroring the poem’s journey from perplexity to a serene acceptance of the unknown.This piece is an invitation to explore the spaces between notes, between words, where the essence of understanding might lie.The emotional core of this composition is also deeply personal. It resonates with my own longing for my father, who passed away seven years prior to the creation of this work. Just as Ikkyu's poem reflects a yearning for a connection with the past, this music embodies my own journey of grief, memory, and the search for peace in the echoes of loss. The intertwining of my personal narrative with Ikkyu’s profound words aims to offer a universal contemplation on the themes of absence, longing, and the ephemeral nature of existence.In creating this work, my aim has been to offer not just a musical experience, but a doorway into the profound simplicity of Zen thought. Through the synthesis of voice, piano, and Ikkyu's evocative poetry, we embark on a journey that transcends the mere act of listening, inviting contemplation, and perhaps, a glimpse into the boundless sky of our own perception.

To me, this composition represents the antithesis of how classical composers thought to compose. By directly contradicting the rules they follow and still creating music, it shows that stiff rule formats and limits on what makes good music are not necessary and oftentimes restrict creative composing. My only hope is that, if Johann Joseph Fux were alive today, he’d see my work as an abomination of all the rules he holds so dear.My Ruleset:1. In sixth species counterpoint (countercounterpoint/anticounterpoint), you may write as many notes as desired in your new melody for each note in the cantus firmus.2. The first note and the last note must not form either an octave, unison, or a fifth with the cantus firmus.3. The penultimate note of your melody should not be an even scale degree.4. Augmented Fourths must resolve down and Diminished Fifths must resolve up.5. You may use parallel motion very recklessly because it obscures the independence of the voices.6. The harmonic interval formed between the voices on the downbeat of every measure may not be a perfect/major consonance-unison, third, fifth, sixth or octave. Diminished, Augmented, and Minor are fine.7. The interval formed between the voices on the second beat of every measure may not be a major third or major sixth.8. The overall shape of your melody should have a single high-point, preferably as far from the middle as is reasonable.9. Except for on the first beat of a measure, Consonant intervals are only allowed if preceded by a dissonant interval on a strong beat.10. Every Chord is fair game.11. The interval between the first beat of each measure should alternate between even numbers and odd numbers.12. Leaps must prepare, leap, and resolve in the same direction and may be greater than a fifth.13. Functional Harmony is for cowards who let chords tell them what to do.

The first of its kind, this is a genuinely playable piano/vocal reduction of Largo al factotum,†the show-stopping first aria from Gioachino Rossini’s famous opera Il barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville). Most reductions of this aria pose a physical hazard to audition and other collaborative pianists who risk injury by trying to grab every fast repeated note and chord in this extremely long aria, nor do the repeated notes tend to come out properly or sound right on pianos compared to the string instruments for which they were written. With this reduction—which was specifically created to be more ergonomic at the piano and safer to get through on long audition-playing days—pianists may now enjoy playing this aria comfortably, without risking strain/injury. However, it’ll still be a tour de force for the baritone!Note that this score does not make any cuts to the aria; therefore, it is also suitable for recital settings without time limits.All Accessible Accompaniments, including this one, boast several unique features:1. No reduction ever requires stretches of over an octave, not including bass notes meant to be held or “fudged†with the pedal (though octaves may also contain chord tones within them). This reduces the amount of rearranging that smaller-handed pianists must already do. Obviously, further reworkings are to be expected and pianists should feel free to add to or modify what I’ve provided.2. I’ve included less essential, but potentially desirable additional voices/passages in cue-size noteheads so that pianists can easily see them, but know that they are not necessary in a “sink or swim†accompanying situation. When known, I’ve noted alternate cuts that singers might like to take within certain arias. 6. In some cases I’ve modernized spelling conventions for easier readability (for example, by replacing “߆with “ss†in German arias) and occasionally I've enharmonically respelled brief passages for greater clarity. Twenty-three patriotic and seasonal selections, hymns, gospel songs and choruses From the Forward: EASY ENSEMBLE MUSIC is a collection of patriotic and seasonal selections, hymns, gospel songs and choruses. It has been prepared for use by church ensembles in various types of programs and services. It is also practical for school ensembles, which today are an important adjunct of the instrumental music teaching program. This volume is intended to help provide worthwhile and instructive music that is interesting to perform for players just beyond the beginner stage (or Grade II as defined by the Instrumentalist Magazine.) It will probably be used most often by youngsters who will need to spend time in individual practice before performing the selections with a group. However, more experienced musicians will find the contents pleasant to play without being taxing. Most selections are of modest length, have ample time for lead parts to catch their breath, and do not make undue demands upon range, technique, or rhythmic virtuosity. Published by Erik Cole (A0.996131). This is a transcription of the complete Pictures at an Exhibition for double reed choir. It is all in the original keys and based on the well-known Ravel orchestration, which is quite difficult. As a result, this arrangement is even more challenging. It is designed with at least 2 players per part in mind, and all of the oboe and bassoon parts are divisi throughout. The attached MP3 recordings are multi-track recordings of me playing all the parts. This was, by far, the most daunting recording I have put together for any of my arrangements, and I apologize for any minor imperfections in timing or pitch. In many places, this really stretched the limits of what I am capable of on bassoon. The middle section of this movement, with all the tremolos and trills, works much better for strings than for double reeds. Still, I was fairly pleased with how the recording of it turned out. The outer sections of the movement are quite difficult because of the extreme ranges that are consistently needed.
