Published by Forton Music - Digital (F2.FM476). ISBN 9790570483754.Permutations was originally written as a piece for Hampshire Double Reed ensemble directed by Andrew Knights. They first performed it at a Double Reed Society Day at Trinity College of Music. Later I wrote the clarinet choir version for a wind course in Scotland, & there are also a saxophone ensemble version, and mixed wind ensemble versions. The title 'Permutations' describes a piece in which all the parts are of equal importance, and play together in various different combinations, or 'Permutations'. The first movement contains some quite dynamic themes, the 2nd is more calm and pensive, but both contain contrasting passages. The 3rd movement - the 'Salsa' is full of exuberance and fun, but with some short contrasting passages in which the various instruments strut their stuff.

The series of irregular isolated phrases in the principal outer sections were actually created by setting some of the text from the aforementioned poem, as the work was originally conceived as a vocal setting. The contrasting second section (later briefly alluded to before the final passage) is faster, in 7/8 metre, and is a series of permutations on a melody created by setting initial lines from Dylan Thomas's 'In My Craft or Sullen Art'. A central section features some military-like fanfare motifs and material from a projected setting of the Gloria. Description: Triptych for String Orchestra sets up three contrasting musical tableaux in as many different genres. Though this approach is often called post-modern, the composer prefers to see it as an indulgence of the many types of music he enjoys. The work opens with a free form improvisatory movement whose sour romanticism comes from its rich chromatic palette. The second movement is in many ways the opposite of the first. It is a very tightly constrained serial work where the parameters of rhythm, inflection, and dynamics, not just pitch, get a full serial workout of permutations. The third and finale movement, then can be seen as a happy medium between the two extremes of the previous movements. It's in the form of an episodic Dionysian romp that alternates between expositions of an ever more shrill theme with puckish episodes of varied quasi-ad lib solos embedded in coloristic texture. There are three movements, Chroma - The Academy - Rock.

As suggested in the title, each piece is based on a single compositional fragment or sketch that had otherwise remained incomplete and dormant. Fragment IV is a modern-day two-part invention. The piece explores various permutations of the opening four bar subject, passed between the hands throughout. Meanwhile, a second part is created by using the initial idea in canon, or by introducing a secondary scalic subject. The work is in a ternary structure, with the opening section returning in a shortened form, and with parts swapped over, as the final part. Meanwhile, the middle section explores the initial subject in augmentation, with a varied secondary part. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for almost all standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players. (A0.976513). The Rondo Scherzando opens with a fanfare that leads directly to principal theme. This somewhat unruly passage with cinematographic overtones leads to a post-modern fantasy that feels like latter-day jazz meditation. The reverie unfolds, leading us to a quasi-humorous semi-bizarre circus-like rendering of the scherzando theme, presented as an episode in a pantheon of unlikely, unexpected and unanticipated circumstances, that dwindles away quietly into a deceptively calm serenity. Subsequent passages turn the main theme over in a variety of different permutations until finally it returns in full regalia to the opening fanfare, this time presented as a final coda that concludes the piece. Originally written with orchestral accompaniment as the third movement of the Piano Concerto #1 in Bb minor, this arrangement for solo piano was made at the request of Joanna Ezrin, pianist and pedagogue, and has been recognized at the MTAC annual convention.

Howard (A0.998867). Monody is a fast tempo study for solo cello which explores the development of a single line (there is no double stopping). The work centres around E minor, and states the main motif at the outset (E, G, F#). This is then extended and transformed throughout the course of the piece. An initial introductory motivic passage is followed by a scalic section that features another core concept of the work; that of the octatonic scale (alternating semitones and tones, or vice versa). Then comes the main extended scherzo-like section, itself in a ternary structure, that exploits permutations of the opening motif and the octatonic scale, across the entire range of the cello. The work builds towards a climax, including in extreme high pitch and loud dynamics. After a silence, there follows a very quiet and mysterious muted coda, which briefly recounts the main motivic ideas of the piece, before ending on the only pizzicato note of the work. Performed here by Alec Keith (flute), Matt Weiss (violin) and the Octava Chamber Orchestra under guest conductor Ian AlvarezWesterly is inspired by the old English folk song Westron Wynde and by the Renaissance masses based on that folk songIt is an expanded version of Celebration originally written for James Pellerite and his North American Native flute [NAF]In order to make the piece accessible to a wider range of performers this version uses a concert flute, with wider range and with just a few of the NAF decorations, and the violin solo part has also been expanded, resulting in a miniature Double Concerto. Westerly uses four distinct themes and weaves them into a joyful whole. The flute soloist introduces himself with the traditional call of the North American Native flute (a repeated minor third phrase), which reappears from time to time in the rest of the piece, and then embarks upon a sort of jig in E flat major (second theme).The violin soloist copies these flute phrases but then introduces the third theme of the work in the related key of C minor, and the string orchestra comes in. This third tune is based on the old Westron Wynde melody but it uses an unusual rhythm (3 3 2) and the excitement gradually begins to mount. So the two soloists rhapsodise on the various tunes and permutations along with the orchestral strings, mixing the various tunes together. In due course the fourth theme comes in, and it is quite surprising how it fits in with the E flat major - C minor interplay, since it is merely a 12 tone row. It follows some of the traditions of the 20th Century atonal composers, but, due to the context in which it is set, it takes on a warmth seldom found in atonal music.

Howard (A0.998838). This piano trio is a single 9-minute movement. The title, Trinity, refers to various uses of the number 3 within the piece. This includes 3 instruments, 3 main sections, the rhythmic interplay of the dotted crotchet pulse (of 3 quavers) in the prevailing 12/8 time signature (with hemiolas), and the use of 3 (and its multiples) in the creation of core material. The work creates memorable motifs which are used in various other melodic and harmonic permutations, as well as in cycles of layered texturing. Trinity's overall structure actually refers to a palindromic form, as earlier sections return towards the end, truncated and in reverse order, thus bringing the piece full circle. The religious symbolism implied in the title may be said to have influenced some rather 'mystical' and 'otherworldly' harmonies and textures. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for higher standard musicians, including students and the more advanced. New Resources is an exploration of the compositional techniques commonly found in African drumming. A simple four-bar pattern is subjected to a number of processes and permutations, creating increasingly complex polyrhythms and a sense of large-scale acceleration. These passages, which are played on wood instruments, are interrupted by shorter sections that involve skin and metal timbres. Composed in 1999, New Resources is one of the few pieces from my undergraduate that still sees the light of day. In 2004, my collaborative partner Lisa Rie used the music to accompany a dance piece entitled Delta Eco, which celebrates the rich flora and fauna of California’s San Joaquin River Delta. New Resources has had performances throughout California and Arizona, and in 2005 it was played by William Moersch and the University of Illinois Percussion Ensemble. ~A.A.

A great piece to show off the talents of mature flute and lever harp performers, this colorful character piece is appropriate for any recital or concert setting. Mannanà n mac Lir occupied several roles in the mythological universe of the Celtic peoples. Most notably, he was considered to be the god of the seas. He was also regarded as a psychopomp-that is, a figure associated with the realm of the dead, acting as a sort of veil between the worlds. In this work, I play on his connection to the sea by quoting the traditional Manx folk tune The Storm Is Up (Callin Veg Dhoan). The tune is developed through several permutations, each portraying a role Mannanà n played. Each movement is ushered to us by a psychopomp veil. With the Churl in the Drab Coat refers to Mannanà n’s association with the trickster figure Bodach an Chota Lachtna. The movement is erratic yet impishly playful. Mannanà n was also regarded as a sort of magician king. In that respect, he was given the role of Guardian of Mag Mell, a place that is comparable to the Nordic conception of Valhalla. Mag Mell was a plain of joy, a kingdom under the sea for a select few. Mannanà n protected this realm with the help of Fragarach, a sword which could slice through any armor and could compel anyone to tell the truth. This movement is bold and heavy in spirit, gradually becoming more dissonant as if portraying an ugly battle to defend this beautiful place. The final veil transports us to the end of times, a fading away of the once-great pantheon. That storm, as all must do, comes to a quiet, peaceful end. Published by Brandon Nelson (A0.912905). According to Homer (Odyssey iv:412), the sandy island of Pharos, situated off the coast of the Nile delta, was the home of Proteus, the old god of the sea. In the Odyssey, Menelaus relates to Telemachus that he had been becalmed here on his journey home from the Trojan War. He learned from Proteus’ daughter Eidothea that if he could capture her father, he could force him to reveal which of the gods he had offended and how he could propitiate them and return home. Proteus emerged from the sea to sleep among his colony of seals, but Menelaus was successful in holding him, though Proteus took the forms of a lion, a serpent, a leopard, a pig, even of water or a tree. Proteus then answered truthfully, further informing Menelaus that his brother Agamemnon had been murdered on his return home, that Ajax the Lesser had been shipwrecked and killed, and that Odysseus was stranded on Calypso’s Isle Ogygia. This piece, for solo tenor sax, illustrates that mighty conflict between Menelaus and Proteus. Each movement illustrates a different form the god took in his attempt to evade sharing his knowledge. Composition The rhythmic motives are based on the ancient Greek poetic meters. I translated these patterns of long and short sounds to musical notation (using the sixteenth note as the basic unit). I randomized the order and deployed the resulting phrase as a sort of idee fixe. Each movement uses this rhythmic idea beginning at a different point. The melodic content is based on a pentatonic set and its permutations, primarily its modes. I arrayed these pitches into a grid (not unlike the matrix used in dodecaphonic music) and assigned pitches to the rhythmic motives using differing deployment schemes (rotation, chaining, etc).
