Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #45421. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.532835). Thérèse Brenet was attracted to the Chinese poems in La Flûte de Jade by Franz Toussaint. She chose seven of these poems in a contrasting style and assembled them into a single work, striving to create an unusual orchestration which reflects this delicate, fantastic and sensual qualities of these poems. Her orchestration uses a small group of strings which are re-enforced by a harpsichord, a vibraphone, a harp and percussion, often superimposed, which serve to underline the delicate character of the poems. IN addition, she uses all styles of vocal production, from whispered passages to spoken words or screams, and from singing normally to sprechgesang. The work finishes serenely with a long melody in flute upon which the baritone repeats the last phrases of the poem in a long perdendosi. The voice and the flute slowly die away without there being a definite ending to the work, which allow the listener to imagine that the work continues, as in a waking dream. One could imagine hearing the echo of the words whispered by the baritone and the arien and luminous sounds of the flute which has lulled us as a soloist throughout the seven poems of the cycle. The orchestration is for 4 percussion, harp, harpsichord, piano and strings (44221). The piece generally lasts approximately fourteen minutes. The composer has intentionally broken with tradition by using instrumental notation for the vovcal part. This notations gives, in her view, a greater ease of reading when the voice exchanges with the flute. This version for flute, voice and piano is identical, as much as is possible, with the orchestral version, excpet for short segments in the 5th and 7th poems. These differences only affect the flute and piano parts and do not affect the vocal part. The Baritone may therefore use this score for performances with orchestra. The Flutist should use the part included in the orchestral parts for performances with orchestra. This work was first performed at the Villa Medicis during Thérèse Brenet time spend there during her Prix de Rome voyage. It was recorded in 2014 with Kurt Ollmann Baritone, Christel Rayneau, flute and the National Polish Radio Orchestra under the direction of Paul Wehage. The orchestral materials are on rental from the publisher.

Sketches of Christ Movement 3 Though I Was Blind; Now I SeeTone Poem for Cello and Piano and Piano by Stephen R Dalrymplebased on John 9, the account of the interactions of the man born blind, Jewish authorities, and Jesus Christtranscribed for solo flute, clarinet, trumpet, euphonium/trombone, and violin Sketches of Christ is a 3 movement work by Stephen R Dalrymple intended for the concert stage (contrasted with preludes and offertories at church). It was originally titled Sonata for Cello and Piano. As I composed similar works, I realized that, although I have used the concepts of sonata form in various movements, because these pieces reflect the drama of selected passages of the Bible, Tone Poem was a more fitting genre title. I have begun the process of transcribing these Tone Poems for additional instruments. I consider these Tone Poems as contemporary classical music. I have used modal harmonies; polychords and polytonality; free dissonance; atonality, mixed meters, etc. to convey the drama of the Bible. Sketches of Christ is based on 3 episodes from Christ’s Life: The calming of the Sea of Galilee, Mary and Martha, and the healing of the man born blind. This score is movement 3 of a 3 movement tone poem, originally scored and premiered as a sonata for Cello and Violin. It is presented here for 5 additional solo instruments: Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Euphonium (or Trombone) and Violin.  Sketches of Christ is written in 20th Century Classical Music composition techniques. Various movements employ a mix of bitonality, modal harmony, deliberate dissonance, and mixed meter. Each movement dramatizes an event form the Life of Christ. This movement expresses the interactions of the man born blind, Jewish authorities, and Jesus Christ from John 9.  The score shows the parts for cello and piano, but individual parts are provided for the other solo instruments.  Includes 14 scores: Full Score for cello and piano letter size; Cello, Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Euphonium (or trombone), and Violin solo parts; Full Score for cello and small page format for performing from a 10 inch tablet and the same solo parts for 10 inch tablet. tablet (Tell your computer which pages you want to print. George Brandon: Two Dream Poems (2020) for Soprano and Piano This piece consists of musical settings of two 20th century poems concerning the dream state: one by the American poet Gary Snyder; the other by Mavash Sabet from Iran. Gary Snyder’s poem, “Maudgalyayana Saw Hellâ€, is a complex and multilayered portrayal of a passage through the dream state, beginning with falling asleep and ending with waking up. At the same time as it describes a mythical journey and an inward psychological journey, it also presents a Buddhist metaphysical perspective in which the whole of life, and our ordinary sense of reality, appear and are questioned as dream states as well. At the time that Mavash Sabet wrote her poem “Hello Again†she was a political prisoner sentenced to twenty years in prison for her religious and educational activities. on behalf of the Bahai faith, a religion which is persecuted by Iran's theocratic government. “Hello Againâ€, from her book Prison Poems, describes a dream experience that renewed her inner sense of freedom despite being incarcerated, and provided her with strength and hope for the future. The question is universal and affects us all, but it is up to each listener to distinguish what it means to them. The work begins with an elegiac funeral march, climaxes with a powerful modulation, and ends in an uncertain tonal landscape. The inspiration for “Poem†came from reading the works of great poets discussing the human condition. Their beautiful words inspired me to write this work in just two weeks. The text was taken from the Emily Dickinson poems “The difference between Despair and Fear†and “‘Hope’ is the thing with feathers.†Poem is written for four SATB singers and a string quintet. Some have asserted that the poem is a compression of Dante's Inferno. In an anecdote he recounted in 1960, prominent astronomer Harlow Shapley claimed to have inspired Fire and Ice in an encounter with Frost a year before the poem was published. Frost asked Shapley how the world will end, and Shapley responded that either the sun will explode and incinerate the Earth, or the Earth will somehow escape this fate only to end up slowly freezing in deep space. American lyric poet Sara Trevor Teasdale (1884-1933) was the first woman and the first poet to win the Pulitzer Prize for Literature. She won the 1918 Pulitzer Prize for her 1917 collection entitled Love Songs. Teasdale was roundly praised for her lyric mastery and romantic subjects. Her poems most often take on the first person role of their female narrators and protagonists. Teasdale’s first poem was published in 1907. Later that year she published her first collection of poems, Sonnets to Duse and Other Poems, written mainly for the Italian actress Eleonora Duse. In 1911 her second collection Helen of Troy and Other Poems received high praise from critics. Her third collection, Rivers to the Sea from 1915 was and remains a best seller and has been reprinted several times. The three poems used here, Joy, The Answer, and .To Joy all date from 1915. These three poems were also included in her Pulitzer Prize-winning collection Love Songs. Teasdale was born in St. Louis, Missouri on August 8, 1884. She was a sickly child, so much so that she was home schooled. As a young woman she had many suitors, including the poet Vachel Lindsay, who thought he could never provide for her. She eventually married businessman Ernst Filsinger, a great admirer of her poems. The couple relocated to New York City. Filsinger’s constant business travel left Teasdale very lonely and depressed. She eventually relocated to another state so she could quickly divorce him. Filsinger was shocked. Teasdale took up again with Vachel Lindsay, who has himself married and had children. Lindsay committed suicide in 1931 and Teasdale followed likewise two years later. She is interred at Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis.
