It Is Not Death to Die is a new setting of French poet Henri Abraham César Malan's Non, ce n'est pas mourir as translated by George Washington Bethune and adapted for this work. Why this text? It first came to my notice shortly after the passing of Billy Graham, who was known to paraphrase D. L. Moody, Someday you will read or hear that Billy Graham is dead. Don’t you believe a word of it. I shall be more alive than I am now. I will just have changed my address. I will have gone into the presence of God.Graham's bold proclamation and Malan's poetry motivated me to focus anew on the resurrection, re-remembering it as the pivotal element of the Christian faith. For if there is no resurrection, Paul says in 1 Cor 15, our faith is useless. But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead! Unfortunately, singing about heaven has, perhaps, been neglected of recent decades. We seem to have focused more on the already to the detriment of the not yet. But it is important to remember that this life is not all there is! Quoting Paul again, the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us (Rom 8:18). Yet, if Christ delays, the grim inevitability of our transition into eternity is a certain experience we all face. Malan's poetry so poignantly and eloquently captures this tension that it compelled me to compose a fresh musical setting that attempts to captures the mixture of dread and hope borne out in the acclamation that death is swallowed up in victory! I pray that this setting aids the Church to remember the great hope and promise Christ has granted us: O Death, where is your victory? O Death, where is your sting?_______________________________________________________________________________________________The music opens with a C# diminished chord in a very still and somber texture reflective of grief. The text is introduced with the first of two main motives, a rising 4-note outline of B minor in a triple repetition of It Is Not Death. As each stanza proceeds the music concludes on the second motive, a 5-note descending span of a minor 7th in Bb Lydian. The energy and mood of the music gradually shift over the five stanzas, as the focus moves from this life to the next; the texture thickens, the harmony expands, and the dynamic grows into the music’s pinnacle on reign with You on high! Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.898494). Full score. I am a frequent visitor to the Protestant Cemetery in Testaccio, Rome. Shelley, Keats and Corso are buried there among other expatriates who adopted the city of Rome as their own. I am a not a huge fan of the music by Ottorino Respighi, whose work, like the Pines of Rome, reminds too much of Hollywood music scores. But I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered on YouTube a chamber work he wrote for mezzo-soprano and string quartet called “Il Tramonto.†The vocal and string writing are exquisite, quite beautiful and heart-felt. When I looked at the source of the text I saw that it was an Italian translation by Roberto Ascoli of a poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley. That immediately inspired me to do my own musical setting of this poem. Two reasons. One, it has a Rome connection. Two, two of my favorite subjects in music are all there in one poem: love and death. Unfortunately I did not find the original English version to be sufficiently “musical.†The archaic language was a bit leaden and convoluted. On the other hand, the Italian translation is so much more lyrical and transcendental. I divided the poem into five parts. At the end I decided to tag on a text I have wanted to set for quite some time: Media Vita. I think the subject of this Latin text fits beautifully as a coda or “apotheosis†to Il Tramonto. I. Moderato … Già v’ebbe un uomo II. Andante … Ora è sommerso il sole III. Adagio … Il given e la dama giacquer tra il sonno IV. Moderato … Neri gli occhi ma non fulgidi più V. Adagio … Ho tal retaggio che la terra non dà VI. Apotheosis: Largo … Media Vita Enjoy!!!

No one had air conditioning or TV sets when I was a boy. The only way to cool off during those long, hot Alabama summers was to either jump in the creek for a swim, or go into town to the movie theater! On Saturday mornings we would pedal our bikes into town, where for a dime, we could spend half the day in refrigerated air comfort. There was always a double feature on Saturday and between the two movies, there was newsreel about the important events of the day, the weekly installment of the serial, one or two cartoons, and always a bouncing ball sing-a-long! Here is an arrangement that reminds me very much of those Saturday mornings. I had to figure out some new things (at least new to me) but I'm rather pleased with the way it turned out. It reminds me very much of those Saturday mornings long ago!

It starts with the trumpets at the end of the world, the sense of quiet expectation. Wind across a field. It drops off into the silence of outer space. The initial theme presented against that impersonal void, knowing that He's out there, somewhere. Some of this is very difficult for me to describe because this is really about the Triune God, the great creative power, the mover in harmony and cooperation with Himself. The second verse is more grand, the love, the sense of story. And then it gets very, very big, in the way that I AM is always in capitals. Who WAS and IS and evermore shall BE! And in my mind that word BE is light, and just explodes against the blackness into a billion sparkles. And we shrink down to the microcosm for a moment, the wonders of His creative power in the tiny worlds, and it fades to the black of space again. Holy, Holy, Holy, though the darkness hide Thee. The Light that we can't see that would outshine all the stars. More beauty, and then we tumble down the waterfall of Living Water from the Throne of God...in Heaven. The golden palaces and the wonder, the unearthliness, the richness of the life. For a moment it's more simple and I'm reminded of an old hymn being sung in a rustic church. Then a vision of the Cosmic Christ from Revelation giving a benediction, and we're plunged into the chorus of Heaven, the new song of the 144,000. (this part sounds really good on an acoustic piano because the sound physically builds on itself) And it ends as it began...

(Psalm 18:10) Are the clouds a hiding place for God? (Job 22:14) Is His residence a place called heaven? Is the earth the footstool of His throne? (Isaiah 66:1) Does God change His mind? (Ex 32:14) ♫ The poetry of the Bible, (like other ancient literature) is full of figures of speech. Figures of speech explain things in words and ideas we can understand. The Bible abounds in figures of speech such as simile (comparison using like or as), metaphor (comparison not using like or as), synecdoche (using a part for the whole), deliberate hyperbole [obvious exaggeration], verbal irony (the tone of voice tells that the speaker means the opposite of the words he or she is using), personification (attributing human features or feelings to animals or inanimate objects), anthropomorphism / anthropopathism (gives human attributes, feelings to God.) [or animals, inanimate objects, cartoon characters.] ♫ God is spirit. (John 1:18, John 4:24) He is infinite, eternal, invisible, undetectable. The humanlike descriptions of God are actually figures of speech that help us understand and identify with Him. Descriptions of God’s eyes, arms, feet, wings, etc. are all figures of speech that tell us God is present everywhere, sees everything, hears everything, and cares about every part of his creation. (God is imminent). ♫ The heavens, even the highest heavens cannot contain Him. (2 Chronicles 2:6, 6:18) God is separate from the universe. (God is transcendent.) Scientific measurements cannot detect Him because He is not in the universe, the universe is in Him. ♫ Just as you can feel your fingers and your toes at the same time, God knows what is happening in every atom of the universe simultaneously. Back to the original question. ♫ After swimming laps in our local pool, I like to float on my back a bit.
