Included are well known songs from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, which are woven into a continuous piece lasting about 6' 45. The medley starts with the English song, ‘Early one morning’, one verse of which re-appears at the end to round things off. The tradition of singing folk songs in schools and in the community has very much faded away in the UK, but the four songs selected for this medley are likely to be well known and loved by many of the older generation!The simple harmonies range from three to four parts (SAB/SATB), with some unison sections as well.

Kantes del verdgel de granadas – Songs from the Pomegranate Garden A Judeo-Spanish song cycle for solo voice and chamber symphony orchestra Composer’s notes: Kantes del verdgel de granadas, or in its English translation: Songs from the Pomegranate Garden, is a cycle of five songs in the Judeo-Spanish dialect, also known as Ladino. The texts, based on folk-poetry, are magical, passionate, and encompass a wide range of human emotions and experiences. We can find in them love and longing, sorrow and death, lightheartedness and folly, as well as burning love and even sexual innuendo. The vocal part portrays different stories and a variety of human characters in each of the five songs. It, thus, ranges in expression from parlando secco to lirico espressivo. The role of the orchestra in this cycle is more than just an accompaniment; it converses with the voice, adds colors and ambience, and serves as a commentary over the sung text. Thus, the orchestral part is equal to, or at times even more predominant than the voice itself. The initiative to write this composition came in response to a specific cultural approach by which creativity based on traditional Judaic material should correspond to four stages in the artistic process: Exploration, Preservation, Interpretation, and Innovation (as translated by the Hebrew terms: חידוש – פירוש – שימור – חיפוש). The main idea behind this initiative was to conserve crucial elements within traditional Jewish folk music, and then, bring about their revival as art music through new contemporary interpretations. Thus, the musical arrangement is partially based on the traditional Ladino tunes and partially original. However, phrases based on old Ladino melodies are starkly modified and composed in such way to completely evoke personal imagery and interpretation. The songs I selected for the cycle were taken from the four-volume collection: Chants judéo-espagnols by Isaac Levy. My criteria for the selection was finding lesser-known melodies, yet most intriguing ones and with a strong Judeo-Spanish character. The five songs have various degrees of arrangement vs. original composition: songs 2 and 3, Mi korason and Entre las huertas, for example, are almost unchanged, while songs 1 and 4, Dos amantes and Malato ‘sta el hijo del rey, heavily combine the old Ladino romancero melodies with originally composed material. The concluding song (Nr. 5) is entirely original, but correspond stylistically to the Judeo-Spanish musical language. While all five songs are secular in nature, the ballad Malato ‘sta el hijo del rey (The King’s Son is Ill) has been traditionally sung - according to Isaac Levy - on the night of Tisha B’Av along the scroll of Eicha to bemoan the destruction of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. The Judeo-Spanish text of the songs can be found below along with its English translation. Duration: ca. 24 min.Performance material by rental only! The set was commissioned in 2020 by Anima Vox Duo (Tadeu Coehlo, flute, and Carole Ott Coelho, voice) for She Can, We Can project. The set was premiered by Anima Vox Duo on March 09, 2021, at the University of North Carolina School of Arts.This was my first time working with the texts by Sara Teasdale (1884-1933), and I was so inspired by her poetry that several more settings followed after it. All of the selected poems for this cycle were published in 1915 in the book entitled Love Songs. Teasdale’s texts indeed have inner music, and it seems like they are just calling to become songs.Performers should take as much freedom as they want, and follow the natural flow of phrases. This cycle is all about being a duet, not one instrument accompanying another. These were selected to cover three eras of Australian colonial history: a song from Australia's convict past, one from the development of the pastoral nation, and finishing with the stories of the bush-ranger history. Drawing on musical styles as diverse as folk song, Aaron Copland, and European ballroom dance music it is a fun and entertaining addition to any concert programme.

Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.8318-4E). The five letters which provide the lyrics for the songs (adapted by the composer) were selected for their range of topics and sentiments. Some portray the wildlife in the mountains (“Glacier Birds...â€). Others extol the beauty of the Sierra (“Mountain Glory,†“Yosemite Fallsâ€). One expresses the whimsical/temperamental personality of the author (“Ice!â€). And the final letter (“Sequoiaâ€) speaks reverently of the great trees, in a language both naturalistic and sacred. They are the “greatest light in the woods, the greatest light in the world.†The musical settings, especially in the piano accompaniment, are quite programmatic. Glacier birds scamper up and down the keyboard in tone clusters. “Icy†glissandi float off. The great trees take root in large, block chords, and waterfalls cascade down in scales.There is personality in the letters. The bond between John Muir and Mrs. Carr (whom he addresses formally) is one of great kinship- a blending of the souls, a “spiritual romance.†As he marvels at the beauty of the wilderness, he writes ardently, “I wish that you could see this...†When he learns that Mrs. Carr, a botanist (whose plants suffer from the frost), dislikes ice, he chides her, and creates a “mock argument†over the value of glacial ice.The songs begin with an ascent into the mountains. They close with the return to the coast, to the magnificent Sequoia trees, where John Muir camps for the night, in the company of a squirrel. Charmingly, he writes “therefore, my Carr, goodnight.â€.
