The composer, violinist and educationalist Louis Spohr (1784–1859) caused a sensation as a child already: At the age of 5, he took his first violin lessons and at the age of 15 was employed as chamber musician of the Duke's orchestra. Very soon, his fame as a virtuoso violinist ran ahead of him, and he undertook concert tours throughout Europe. On these trips, he was often accompanied by his first wife, a virtuoso harpist and pianist. For their joint music-making, Spohr wrote a Sonata for violin and harp the adagio of which was rearranged for bassoon and piano. It was followed by arrangements for other melodic instruments, although not by Spohr himself. This is a melodious setting – now cantabile, now passionate – which is worth playing and listening to.

On his numerous concert tours through the whole of Europe, he played time and again the concertos he had composed for his instrument or played his own works in smaller ensembles. Apart from these 'serious' chamber music works, i.e. sonatas, trios, quartets, etc., Spohr also wrote a number of salon pieces: the first series with six titles as opus 127 and the second as opus 135 which opens with the 'Barcarole in G major' presented here. The success of the salon pieces must have been great, and the composer liked to perform these pieces himself.

Johann Friedrich Franz Burgmüller, generally known as Friedrich Burgmuller (4 December 1806 – 13 February 1874) was a German pianist and composer[1] during the Romantic period. He is perhaps best known for his three collections of children's etudes (or teaching pieces) for the piano, particularly his Op. 100 25 Études faciles et progressives (25 Easy and Progressive Studies) for early intermediate students. The other two collections, for more advanced students, were Op. 105 and 109.Life: Friedrich Burgmüller was born in Ratisbon (at that time part of the Principality of Regensburg, Confederation of the Rhine). His father Friedrich August Burgmüller and his younger brother Norbert Burgmüller were also composers. His mother was pianist and singer Therese von Zandt.He moved to Kassel in 1829 to study with Ludwig Spohr and Moritz Hauptmann. There he appeared as a pianist for his first concert, January 14, 1830.Burgmüller moved to Paris in 1832 (at age 26 ), where he stayed until his death. Norbert Burgmüller, his brother, made plans to join him in Paris, in 1835. However, he drowned in a spa in Aachen during an epileptic seizure a year later. In Paris, Burgmüller adopted Parisian music and developed his trademark (light) style of playing. He wrote many pieces of salon music for the piano and published several albums. Burgmüller also went on to compose piano études intended for children. He died in Paris on February 13, 1874.Works:Burgmüller composed piano pieces, waltzes, nocturnes, polonaises and two ballets. His Peasant Pas de Deux was added to Adolphe Adam's ballet Giselle for its 1841 premiere. This music was originally titled Souvenirs de Ratisbonne.

In the time of travelling violin virtuosos in the 19th century, the Belgian composer Henri Vieuxtemps was regarded as one of the 'greatest', next to Paganini, Spohr, Bériot, Wieniawski and others. His concert tours led him to the 'new world' and through Europe to Russia where he lived in Petersburg for a few years and founded the violin class at the local conservatoire. His most important pupil - after his return to his Belgian home country - was Eugène Ysaÿe. As a composer, he had written compositions mainly, though not exclusively for 'his' instrument, the violin. German.Auch wenn Moritz Hauptmann (1792–1868) von Hause aus eigentlich Geiger war, komponierte der Schüler (und spätere Freund) von Louis Spohr hauptsächlich Vokalmusik. Auf Empfehlung Mendelssohn Bartholdys wurde der Dresdner 1842 Thomaskantor und Musikdirektor in Leipzig. Dessen Werk sollte auch stilistisches Vorbild für Moritz Hauptmann werden. Um 1865 schrieb er eine Sammlung von „6 Liedern für 4-stimmigen Männerchor“, op. 55 (nach Texten aus Friedrich Osers „Naturliedern“), die in einer zeitgenössischen Besprechung als „schöne Lieder, die doch einmal aus voller Brust erklingen und dem Männerchor natürlich und geistig entsprechen“ gelobt wurden. Sie leben von einer klassizistisch-romantischen Tonsprache, sind fasslich und sangbar gesetzt – ein Leckerbissen für jeden Männerchor. Die „Abendruhe“ steht an vierter Stelle des Zyklus. Es ist ein ruhiger und getragener Satz, stimmungsvoll und harmonisch reizvoll.
