The piece ‘Fragile Textures’ has been written for 10 Piece Orchestral Brass and Percussion and features a somewhat distant-sounding melody that is being masked by unruly harmonies and frequent pulls of tension. We hear slight glimmers of hope that an uplifting sound can come through the texture, yet there is still a lingering feeling of desperation for the listener. Following an intense and exhilarating 1st movement, the piece then transitions into an uncertain sounding bridge section that then reveals the melody that was once desperately trying to break through the texture before. Continuing to the final third and faster movement, we are reminded again of the ambiguous harmonies that once tried to steal away the melody but, once again, the major tonality breaks through and brings the piece to a rousing finale with virtuosic brass playing and a sense of positivity towards the end. .

Published by Colin Bayliss (A0.938413). Piano Trio (B44) was written in the spring of 1991 for David Johnson and the trio which he was forming in Cologne. The work is in three movements:-1. Structures The three instruments build differing structural patterns based on a 12-note row. The violin and 'cello often complement each other, but the piano rarely joins them and tries to pull the music towards a diatonic tonal language, eventually succeeding to end in G major. The movement is in arch form, the second half being based on the retrogrades of the note row. 2. Textures Most forms of sound textures are used, including col legno and sul ponticello for the strings, while the piano occasionally employs soft-headed timpani sticks both on the keyboard and the interior of the instrument. Again the movement is in arch form, with a central section incorporating a miniature scherzo, with a trio section parodying the palm court trio style with a tune of sickly sentimentality. [ This movement may be played separately under the title Einer Kleiner Alptraum - A Little Night... mare] 3. Metamorphoses The notes which will eventually become a Scottish folk tune are hidden either in the repeated notes or in the left hand of the piano, either singly or in harmony. After a neo- classical exposition, using a serial melody, progress is quickly halted by the use of some of the notes of the folk tune being arranged into the theme of Weber's Turandot which was used by Hindemith in his Symphonic Metamorphoses . This pulls the music into a slightly more tonal frame work which becomes more pronounced after a reference to the theme of the slow movement of the Eroica symphony used in Richard Strauss' Metamorphosen. From then onwards, tonality, or rather modality, is established and the folk tune style is maintained with simplicity to the end, except for a miniscule coda reminiscent of the opening of the movement. The work exploresdiverse textures within a short time-span. The piece is in four general sections: It begins witha slow and unfolding opening leading to a moderate jaunt. This proceeds into a much fasterand driving section which ends very abruptly. The moderate pace begins again to themoderate pace which leads finally the opening spare textures again.The seeds of the musical material for the entire work come from the first mandolin's openinggesture.Aspects of the color and textures of the mandolin ensemble have been utilized by thecomposer in the work, inspired very much from the hearing of countless recordings of theSydney Mandolins in the performance of contemporary music.

Numbers I and II are titled 'Moving Between' and 'Breathing' respectively and all three are available on this site. Any one of these may be performed separately or the three movements can be played as a set. On occasions the textures of 'Drama' hark back to those heard in 'Moving Between', however in the latter there is transitional material between textures, be they melodic or chordal. Here, transitions are absent andcontrasts are starker, being produced by opposites such as slow and fast speeds, symmetrical and asymmetrical harmonies, porous and thick textures and sound and noise.

Youngstown is a city in Ohio near the state’s border with Pennsylvania which fueled America's burgeoning industrial revolution with its steel manufacturing. After World War II, however, Youngstown began a slow economic decline as its economy failed to diversify. This culminated on “Black Monday,” September 19, 1977, when several steel plants shut down, destroying over 5,000 jobs overnight, and tens of thousands more in the coming months.This piece attempts to capture the history and spirit of Youngstown through the multifaceted textures of the wind band. With light flowing textures representing the city's beginnings as an iron mining town to harsher, industrial sounds for its height of influence, both give way to the devastation of Black Monday. Despite this, a melodic throughline permeates the darkness, representing the survival of the soul of Youngstown.Youngstown is a challenging, soulful, and emotional piece that should be playable by varsity-level high school bands and college wind ensembles.
