Can be played as separate movements or flowing into each other. Passing opens with shock, disbelief and realisation that change has begun, followed by questioning why, and anger at at the loss of what was once a world understood to a feeling of being left behind. A feeling of the passing of time and lost youth gives way to self-pity and sadness. Anger follows, then resistance, then reflection on the speed of such change. Ultimately resignation. Looking back through the rose-tinted glasses of Reminiscing brings forth varied memories of times past and what hindsight deems to be 'those halcyon days'. Apprehensively Emerging into the new territory of change. Initially accepting the opportunities of it, then cautious and worried about the unknown to finally the knowledge that change will happen anyway - so just get on with it!

Is an arrangement that will sound quite like the original - with the obvious difference that all music and secondary melodies must be played by a single instrument - the piano. This version follows the studio recording, not the version made by Queen for their live performances. My score includes chord symbols, in case you prefer to play them instead of reading exactly each note I've written. I've totally forgotten the original and if you asked me to play that now, I couldn't. Sometimes, I have to go back to the music sheet, and I can't read that well either. The modulation into the third verse is coupled with a key change, intended to convey a stronger, more sorrowful emotion. The work ends in quiet with the person alone. Alone. This three movement composition is a musical portrait of Delaware up until its being the first state to ratify the constitution. It was composed for the University of Delaware Wind Ensemble, Dr. Robert J. Steckfuss, conductor as a result of a commission from the Xi Mu Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. The work is in three movements: I. Stewards of the Land - This movement is a tribute to the Lenni Lenape Indians. It uses a melody from a Lenape Indian song that is first stated in the English Horn. This melody is then developed through adding counterpoint, harmony, orchestration, motivic variation, rhythmic and tempo changes, and the addition of original material. II. Settlement and Conflict - This movement reflects the European settlement of Delaware and the conflict with the indians. It begins with slow section representing serenity. A faster section using a melody from a Dutch dans represents the first European settlement in Delaware. A minor version of the dans combined with fragments of the Lenape Indian song from the first movement represents the conflict. This is followed by a return to the serenity section. A final fast section introduces a setting of the Swedish melody from Amerikabrev, representing the first permanent settlement in Delaware by Sweden. The movement ends with a section of Rule Britannia representing the colony falling under British rule. III. Forging A Nation - This movement portrays events leading towards being the first state to ratify the constitution. The movement begins with a section reflecting the anxious times of declaring independence, fighting for freedom, and forging a new government. The second section builds in confidence. After a slower section of reflection, the movement ends triumphantly in celebration of a new country.

Programme Notes Boudicca became the Queen of the Iceni upon the death of her husband, Prasutagus. The Iceni had lived in relative peace with the Romans, with Prasutagus living as a client king, paying tribute to Rome. The Romans refused to accept a woman as the ruler, and sought to assume total control. To demonstrate its superiority, a Roman Legion attacked the Iceni, captured Boudicca and made her watch as her daughters were raped. She sought revenge, allying the Iceni with the Trinovantes under her command, and wreaked havoc, destroying many Roman settlements. Boudicca was only stopped when Rome sent one of the best generals of the time, Seutonius Paulinus. Seutonius has been depicted offering Boudicca surrender with honour and her life, but when she rejected this, his tactical acumen proved superior, and all the Iceni and Trinovantes were wiped out. 1 – Boudicca Unites the Tribes The piece opens with the initial statement of Boudicca’s theme. Figure 3 depicts Boudicca’s reign as the leader of the Iceni, interspersed with a sadder theme depicting her lonely widowhood. Figure 4 sees the tribes called together with a drinking song and Figure 5 is the war cry, as Boudicca gives a rousing speech, first to her own warriors then to the Trinovantes. The second time bar before Figure 7 sees the tribes fall into a restless sleep. Amid early morning mists, Figure 7 sees restless horses, with distant fanfares heard, signalling the coming of the Romans. The Romans main theme is at Figure 8, with a constant fanfare over the top, signalling the confidence of the leaders. Figure 10 sees the Iceni and Trinovantes coming slowly out of hiding, and Boudicca’s theme growing in volume until the death chords signify the tribes have prevailed. 2. The Bards Sing The tribes sing a hymn to an unnamed Pagan God. At Figure 13, the Euphonium develops Boudicca’s theme depicting Taranis, the Bard of the Iceni, singing wistfully of happier times. He then makes an impassioned speech for peace, before cutting off in mid sentence. He then sits quietly (Figure 16) fearing the future. Figure 17 gives a euphoric and hopeful rendition of the hymn, as if Taranis has not been heard. 3 – Epping NB: It is my piece, and I say Epping is as credible as anywhere as the site of the final battle, and will not enter into any correspondence on the matter! A fanfare awakens the two tribes. Figure 18 sees the tribes prepare for a final battle, and the repeated section depicts two victories at Verulanium (St Albans) and Londinium (London – then a small barracks). At Figure 20 Taranis has a vision, and tries to change Boudicca’s mind about another attack. Boudicca listens to him, but tells him the die is cast, and there is no going back. Death or Glory… The war cry ensues at Figure 21, but at Figure 22 it is the Romans’ theme heard, and the death chords (Figure 24) signify that it is the two tribes that are being slaughtered this time. Brave souls (Repiano and Flugel at 24) fight on in vain to allow Boudicca to escape. At Figure 25 Boudicca prays, but realising all is lost, at Figure 26 drinks poison. As she dies, the last thing this brave British heroine hears is the sound of the Roman’s theme, signifying Seutonius’ total victory. William Elsom, December 2004

So, to accommodate those persons with an average hand and technique, we offer this version.The main feature that is Missing from our rendition is the change of direction in each measure in the right hand. We have opted for a uniformly contrary-motion concept throughout. The span of each hand, which originally overlapped several times, has here been re-configured to keep the hands from doing so, whilst retaining all the harmony and motion of the original. The tune is original, of course. The duple-triple opposition is notated with dots and flags, rather than using a 2 against 3 presentation. Fingerings are offered. This original tune is ideal for beginning groups with a couple of ringers ready for a bit of a challenge. While using no note shorter than a quarter note, all parts keep the same bells throughout, with the exception of the positions playing F (F4, F5, and F6); these parts switch from F to F# and back numerous times throughout the piece, with each change being notated by an accidental as extra support. A great piece for helping push those ringers ready to take on a bit more!
