In That’s How the Story Goes, the archangels Michael and Raphael are hosting a heavenly campfire, and all the youngest angels want to hear the Christmas Story. Happy to oblige, the other archangels take turns telling their parts of the story. Gabriel tells of visiting Mary, Uriel tells of visiting Joseph, Sealtiel & Jehudiel tell of their visit to the shepherds, and Barachiel tells of visiting the three wise men in their dreams to warn them about King Herod. The musical features a simple script with minimal memorization which allows for maximum flexibility with age-range, cast size, and rehearsal time-- the longer, adapted scripture readings may be read from a book or binder. Each part of the story is followed by an original song sung by the entire cast. Costumes, sets, and props are also minimal, and there are no scene changes, which allow this show to be staged in any space, including traditional church sanctuaries. Approximate performance time 30 minutes That’s How the Story Goes features five original songs written and arranged for school-aged children by Joanna Mills. The songs are all set in an accessible range for young children, and feature simple tunes which are easy to learn. This package contains two versions of each song; an easy unison version (with optional easy descant or counterpoint harmonies on the final chorus), and a 2-part choir version, which features simple, easy-to-learn harmonies. This allows you to mix and match your arrangements to suit the abilities of your singers and your rehearsal time constraints. For those students who do not read music, the lyrics are included in the script. The piano accompaniments are at an intermediate level and guitar chords are included, which allows older youth to participate as musicians (or allows experienced accompanists to learn them quickly). This progressive scale system coordinates basic concepts from elementary to advanced scales in preparation for the Scale System by Carl Flesch. In some aspects it goes beyond the scope of the Flesch system. One-octave scales are introduced in patterns with emphasis on half steps and finger retention. The two-octave scale patterns are non-shifting. Three-octave scales are offered with traditional and modern fingerings. The double stop scales vary in fingerings in order to teach the basic concepts of double-stops. Harmonics are included beyond the scope of the Flesch system, in a basic form including natural harmonics.

The piece takes off immediately with a thematic statement in the trombone, breaking in a duet with the horn. Additional entries keep massing in the lower voices until most of the ensemble is involved. All of a sudden, the upper brass, silently present the tune in block harmonies until the lower brass present a countermelody. Now! Everybody’s involved. Next, a dialog between the upper brass and middle brass takes place as it alternates back and forth. With a modulation in place the tempo goes slow, the tune is in the lower brass- expressive! All of a sudden from bottom to top motives are presented- in stacked chords…. This goes through different transformations until the piece elevates into an uplifting conclusion.

Sally in Our Alley is a 1931 British romantic comedy drama film directed by Maurice Elvey and starring Gracie Fields, Ian Hunter, and Florence Desmond.A British soldier (Ian Hunter) goes off to fight in World War I, with his girlfriend (Gracie Fields) waiting and worried at home. He is soon wounded in battle and crippled. He comes to the conclusion that she would be better off believing that he has been killed so she can get on with her life. She gets the news and is devastated. Several years later she is still grieving for him, but he has now been cured and goes looking for her. The film incorporated Fields' hugely popular signature song, Sally, itself a reference to Henry Carey's 1725 song, Sally in Our Alley, which had long been a traditional English country dance.Here's a rendition of Sally in our Alley for Brass Quintet. This song starts with the narrator/lyricist saying that he overheard a guy at the train station trying to say farewell to his girl.  The guy would kiss her, bid her adieu, get on the train, then get off and do the whole thing over again.  And, he did this seven times!  What would he say to her each time?  He’d tell her that he’s leaving, that she shouldn’t cry, that he’ll write and that if she does not hear from him she should assume he’s been arrested.  What a romantic line!   Anyway, that’s the gist of the “Toot, Toot, Tootsie!†lyrics.  Credited to Gus Kahn, Ernie Erdman and Dan Russo, New York City’s Leo Feist, Inc. first published this upbeat, leave-taking song in 1922.  It had been one of 29 numbers featured in the 1921 Broadway production Bombo, a vehicle designed to showcase the talent of Al Jolson.  Six years later Jolson sang it in The Jazz Singer, generally recognized as the first sound feature film.  Additionally, all three composers, plus Ted Fio Rito and Eddie Cantor, also made early and very popular recordings.  This bubbly, cheerful arrangement opens in the key of F major with a suggested tempo of 120 BPM.  After an 8-measure introduction, the piece goes right to the familiar chorus with Trumpet 1 and Trombone switching leads and ending with a wonderful Fillmore-style smear.  The tempo then slows dramatically for a somewhat pensive interpretation of the verse, the narrator’s observations, Horn and Trumpet 1 alternating the lead.  At measure 67 the chorus repeats faster than ever, a recommended 132 BPM, as Trombone and the two Trumpets take turns with the melody.  This leads right into a repeat of the verse—this time played at full speed—and a change of key to D-flat major.  Trombone and Tuba play in unison, exchanging the melody with Trumpets, right on into the third go-round of the chorus.  The piece wraps up with a vaudeville-style conclusion and eventually fades away.  (But don’t miss Trombone's four-measure reference to “Charlottetown Is Burning Down/Goodbye, Liza Jane†at measure 141.)Lots of fun!  Completed in 2023, performance time at the suggested tempo runs about 2 minutes, 47 seconds. Waltzing Matilda is Australia’s most widely known folk song, and one that has been popularly suggested as a potential national anthem.The song narrates the story of an itinerant worker (swagman) making a drink of tea at a bush camp (billy) and stealing a sheep (jumbuck) to eat. In some aspects it goes beyond the scope of the Flesch system. One-octave scales are introduced in patterns with emphasis on half steps and finger retention. The two-octave scale patterns are non-shifting. Three-octave scales are offered with traditional and modern fingerings. The double stop scales vary in fingerings in order to teach the basic concepts of double-stops. Harmonics are included beyond the scope of the Flesch system, in a basic form including natural harmonics.

This is a one-movement sonatina in Eb major (though a sonata might be a better description of its scale) lasting just over 10 minutes. It is Classical/Romantic in style. It begins with with a slow introduction, moving through a number of different ideas, until the exposition starts with the traditional structure of 1st subject, 2nd subject etc. However, the development forgets any trace of the classical themes from the exposition and goes on a whirlwind adventure through a large variety of different themes and passages, many of which are very virtuosic, and some are more modern in style with sections of perhaps phantasmagorical 7th chord shiftings. After a very explosive end to the development, a recapitulation rounds everything off with a return of the more formal and structured 1st and 2nd subjects, as if nothing had happened. The level is very advanced (though most certainly not unplayable!), and should work well performed in concert. .

It is one of my all-time favourite Swedish folk songs. The text of the song is a poetic expression of longing felt for a loved-one. The arrangement goes in a slow waltz with a slight swing and would work well as a dance for romantic couples.The arrangement uses broken chords with many open strings which are meant to ring out while the melody floats above. The open strings in the chords give the piece a slightly modal character that is typical of many Swedish folk melodies.The notation and tabs contain extensive left and right hand fingering and is easily within reach of intermediate students of fingerstyle acoustic guitar.

And although our outings were in a car and not in a horse-drawn sleigh, they were just as exciting and as full of anticipation whether we were on the road to visit grandma's house, or merely taking a Thanksgiving drive.In this musical story a Thanksgiving drive is represented by the main theme. Then suddenly, a far-too-usual scene plays out when a tire goes flat! The Horn plays solo as father goes out on his own to change the tire. Soon, the snow starts to lightly fall. Tire replaced, the snow slowly flutters to a few stray flakes as we are on our way once more, yet that wintery pause was only temporary as we come to our journey's end.May this piece be a welcome addition to your Autumn/Christmas repertoire!
