Piano Trio,String Ensemble - Digital Download SKU: A0.1004152 Composed by Matthew Scott Phillips. Contemporary. Score and parts. 98 pages. Matthew Scott Phillips #5800833. Published by Matthew Scott Phillips (A0.1004152). Throughout the centuries, civilizations have used sundials to tell time. This instrument consists of a gnomon (Greek for knower), a long pole or incline, whose shadow is cast onto a flat stone or metal plate, that either lies on the ground or is erected onto a wall. This plate is marked with the hours of the day, and the gnomon's shadow passes over the marks. More than just an ancient timepiece, these instruments are doorways to the eternal past, and prophets of the eternal future. They bare witness to the infinite fleeting-ness of the lives of human beings. Unlike a modern watch or digital clock, in which every second enjoys its own momentary significance, the hours as marked by the sundial flow into one another in a continuous stream, that is ultimately timeless. The final hour of any mortal creature is, in this way, no more significant than the first, and all our hours seem insignificant in the context of the cosmos' grandness. Etched upon a great many sundials, in Greek, Latin, English, German, or French, is a motto designed to inspire human beings to consider these truths. Why so many sundial makers felt the need to inscribe on their creations their own philosophies and musings is unclear. Yet, each of these mottos seems contrived to express the contemplations of time and eternity so integral to the sundials' existence. Mottos such as umbra sumus (we amount to shadow) often hold multiple meanings. The we referred to can be the hours, which seem extant only because of the shadow passing over them. Or it can refer to the ephemeral nature of our lives, which on the grand calendar of eternity are so short as to be nothing. Or perhaps it warns that time itself is no more than an illusion; a shadow. Whether they are existential, humorous (I only count the sunny hours), or offer advice (use the hours, don't count them), these mottos are intended to give us pause: to compel us to look for a moment, not at the fleeting significance of our mundane lives, ticked away as they are in tiny hours, but to consider the eternal time that lies beyond us, and to therefore be briefly in contact with it. This composition, approximately an hour long and written for piano trio (Piano, Violin, and Cello), intends as its goal the same purpose as the mottos that inspired it. To transport those who listen to it (listen not merely hear) away from the earthly, and into the cosmic. Each movement is named after a different motto. The mottos, their English translations and the locations of the sundials that bare (or once bore) them is listed at the front. This is one hour, hopefully, that will not simply fade away, but rather will be one spent in the company of the eternal. .

C Instrument - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1381727 By Stacey Plays Hymns. By Stacey Plays Hymns. Arranged by Anastace. Christian,Historic,Praise & Worship,Religious,Sacred. Lead Sheet / Fake Book. 4 pages. Anastace #966363. Published by Anastace (A0.1381727). Here is the lead sheet version of the hymn, The Harvest of the Earthâ€, as heard on my YouTube channel and requsted by listeners. Originally titled “See How Brown Autumn Spreads the Fieldsâ€, this song is so rare that I couldn’t find any music for it online, and therefore wrote a new melody and accompaniment for it that captures the the solemnity and even anguish of the lyrics. It’s one of the songs of harvest off of my album entitled “Hymns of Autumnâ€, but doesn’t talk about harvest in the traditional sense we normally sing about these days. Not many talk about the judgement of God in today’s church, and this hymn will send chills down the spine of the most devout believer as we realize the full spectrum of God's character, including His wrath and power on Judgement Day. I found this in an old hymnal that was so old that the “Sâ€s were still written as “Fâ€s, and I had to squint to read it while learning to sing for this recording. I hope this ancient and powerful hymn finds a place to minister to today's church and believers around the world, perhaps after a sermon on God’s judgement, or for a Lent or Advent service about repentance and turning to God, both individually and as a nation. This version is in B Minor to match the original recording, and includes the chords for the whole song including the reharmonized verse with a different melody. Also available, by searching Stacey Plays Hymns and the song title on this site is the full piano vocal arrangement as played in the original recording. For other formats including large print, simplified, or extended choral harmony versions, please write me at staceyplayshymns@gmail.com and I'll be glad to make them especially for you. Purchase includes a free license for one church service with under 300 people, with proper attribution and credit in any printed or online materials. For a license to use this work on a larger scale, please contact me for permission and other usage details including lyrics formatted for printing in church bulletins or for powerpoint. Please let me know if there is any other way I can serve you as a congregation or fellow music/choir director as I endeavour to write several new choral anthems per year, along with my other recording work.Thank you for supporting modern hymnwriters and musicians!

Flute Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.533595 Composed by Carson Cooman. Concert,Contemporary,Folk,Standards. Individual part. 7 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3030249. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533595). Ancient Airs (2004) for solo flute was written for and is dedicated to flutist Sandra Ragusa. It is in two movements, each with a spirit of ancient airs re-imagined in a modern context. The ancestry of the modern flute as a folk instrument is the inspiration for the work's concept. They should always be played with a lyrical, singing approach.Beyond the Mountain uses as its basic musical material a simple transformation of a modalmelody in D minor. Gradually tones are added borrowed from other modalities. The openingsection is slow and lyrical. The middle section is more active -- contrasting the D minorchord tones with the added diminished tones of the first section. The final section recalls thematerial of the opening with a wider transformation.Forgotten Incantation uses a wider modal language than the first movement. Although stillgenerally slow and song-like, it is more energetic. Energetic gestures interrupt and drive thesong narrative forwards.

Piano,Viola - Level 1 - Digital Download SKU: A0.548507 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by James M. Guthrie, ASCAP. Christian,Christmas. Score and part. 4 pages. Jmsgu3 #3387407. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.548507). The First Noel arranged for Viola & Piano with new harmony for the final verse.Origins The First Noel is an English Christmas carol. Even more, it was probably written in the late Cornish Renaissance period. While other versions spell the title as Nowell, this is just a colloquial variation. Furthermore, Noel is an older word meaning Christmas. Therefore the First Noel translates as the First Christmas. First of all, Gilbert and Sandy published the earliest version. As a result, this version appears in the Carols Ancient and Modern songbook of 1823. William Sandy edited and arranged the book. Similarly, his partner Davies Gilbert edited and added the familiar extra verses. The First Noel: Viola Version comes with new harmony in final verse for more energy and drive. Stainer Organist and composer Sir John Stainer published the most noteworthy customary arrangement in the 1870’s. Stainer is above all famous for his songbook entitled: Christmas Carols New and Old (1871). This volume served as an important catalyst for reviving the English Christmas carol. Other famous Stainer arrangements from this book are such titles as What Child Is This, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen, Good King Wenceslas, and I Saw Three Ships. Diatonic Function The melodic structure in the First Noel is uncommon among English folk tunes. It simply repeats one phrase twice then follows a variation refrain. All three phrases of the song end on the mediant scale degree. This is unusual because the diatonic function of the mediant is non-final compared to the more usual tonic or even dominant degrees. Consequently, this gives the song as kind of open-ended feeling – like maybe it never really ends. Political Context The Catholic clergy sang carols outside of the church in Latin. After the Protestant Reformation, the reformers thought it would be better for everyone to sing carols. They decided to bring music back to the common folk. So, they translated the lyrics from Latin into common language. Moreover, the Protestants wanted more control over the music in church than what the Vatican allowed. Protestant composers such as William Byrd composed complex polyphonic Christmas music that they called carols. Nonetheless, some famous folk carols were composed in this era. Eminent composers in the nineteenth century began to revise and adapt them. Consequently, they revived the English carol. Register for free lifetime updates and revisions at www.jamesguthrie.com

Furthermore, Noel is an older word meaning Christmas. Therefore the First Noel translates as the First Christmas. First of all, Gilbert and Sandy published the earliest version. Published by Antonio Gervasoni (A0.1088411). Single-movement work for 10 musicians. This piece is inspired by the reading of the book 'Behind the Silence: Music in the Nasca Culture', by the Polish scientist Anna Gruszczyńska-Ziółkowska, which describes the discovery, in 1994, of several antaras (Andean pan flutes) made of clay in a temple in the city of Cahuachi, the political and cultural center of the Nasca culture. The book includes tables with the exact tones that each tube is capable of producing. The Spirits of Cahuachi uses these tones, i.e. their approximate counterpart in our modern tuning system, treating them in different ways, sometimes as chords, sometimes as scales, sometimes as pitch-class sets, fragmenting the sets, and then overlapping the resulting groups, etc. Of course, there is no intention to produce something that resembles the music of the ancient Nasca inhabitants. We don't know anything about their music. None of it has survived with the exception of these tones, these 'spirits' contained in the pipes of the antaras discovered in Cahuachi.

In this piece, I realize neoclassical elements within a post-modern aesthetic. Chorale melodies are interweaved with contemporary countermelodies to produce a modern sound world with familiar undertones. One of the highlights of the quartet is the alto saxophone cadenza in the middle. The alto saxophonist is at liberty to improvise or follow what is on the page. As you listen, imagine the piece through two different lenses, a contrapuntal lens, and a timbral lens. Through the contrapuntal lens you will see the piece gradually depart from its traditional chorale focused language. Through the timbral lens multiple sound worlds can be heard. This piece is ideal for high school solo and ensemble competitions or performances, college ensembles, and professional players. Children,Christmas,Romantic Period. Score and parts. 3 pages. Arte Nova Music Lab #2930385. Published by Arte Nova Music Lab (A0.742374). The First Noel (also written The First Noël and The First Nowell) is a traditional classical English Christmas carol, most likely from the early modern period, although possibly earlier.[2][3] Noel is an Early Modern English synonym of Christmas.[4]In its current form, it is of Cornish origin, and it was first published in Carols Ancient and Modern (1823) and Gilbert and Sandys Carols (1833), both of which were edited by William Sandys and arranged, edited and with extra lyrics written by Davies Gilbert for Hymns and Carols of God. Today, it is usually performed in a four-part hymn arrangement by the English composer John Stainer, first published in hisCarols, New and Old in 1871.[2] Variations of its theme are included in Victor Hely-Hutchinson's Carol Symphony. The melody is unusual among English folk melodies in that it consists of one musical phrase repeated twice, followed by a refrain which is a variation on that phrase. All three phrases end on the third of the scale. It is thought to be a version of an earlier melody sung in a church gallery setting; a conjectural reconstruction of this earlier version can be found in the New Oxford Book of Carols.[5]The Annunciation to the shepherds and the Adoration of the shepherds are episodes in the Nativity of Jesus described in the second chapter of the Gospel of Luke (Luke 2). The Star of Bethlehem appears in the story of the Magi (the Wise Men) in the Gospel of Matthew; it does not appear in the story of the shepherds. Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1257721 Composed by Jakob Hintze. Arranged by Todd Marchand. Christian,Easter,Sacred. 24 pages. Con Spirito Music #850950. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1257721). An ideal hymn selection for Easter Sunday, Eastertide, or at any celebration of the eucharist, At the Lamb's High Feast We Sing is one of many hymns translated from Latin by Robert Campbell (1814-1868), a Scottish advocate (lawyer) and Roman Catholic layperson. First published in 1850, At the Lamb's High Feast We Sing was one of four of Campbell's hymn texts to be included in Hymns Ancient & Modern (1861), the first standardized and popular hymnal of the Anglican Church. The tune accompanying the text, known as SALZBURG, is attributed to the German composer Jakob Hintze (1622-1702). Its harmonization has long been attributed to J.S. Bach and numbered among his works as BWV 262. However, the New Edition of the Complete Works of Bach, published by Barenreiter, no longer recognizes this, and the harmonization matches that of Johann Pachelbel's Alle Menschen müssen sterben — Choral mit 8 Partiten (Chorale with 8 Variations) of 1683.Regardless of the authorship of text or tune, At the Lamb's High Feast We Sing is a richly theological, grand hymn that references God's saving works in both the Old Testament and the New, culminating in Christ's victorious resurrection and his triumph over sin and death, and celebrates his feeding of the faithful gathered for the eucharistic feast with his Body and Blood. This arrangement for organ and brass quintet begins with alternating fanfares for organ and brass, followed by:Verse 1: organ accompanimentVerse 2: brass accompanimentVerse 3: organ accompaniment with solo trumpet punctuationsInterludeVerse 4: organ and brass accompaniment in alternate harmonizationCoda recapitulating the introductory fanfares Includes full score, parts for organ, Bb tpt. 1, Bb tpt. 2, F horn, tbn, tuba, and reproducible bulletin insert for voices ©Copyright 2023 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). William Butler Yeats ends his short story The Adoration of the Magi with the narrator describing a centuries old Gaelic prayer… when I pray against the demons I repeat a prayer which was made I know not how many centuries ago to help some poor Gaelic man or woman who had suffered with a suffering like mine.â€The ancient prayer is presented for female voices and solo violin followed by The Magi introducing piano and choir. Yeats’ Magi “appear and disappear†in modern times, with “their ancient faces like rain-beaten stonesâ€. They continue to search and wait for Christ’s second coming with their “eyes still fixed, hoping, hopingâ€.  The Magi will remain “the unsatisfied ones†until they “find once more, the uncontrollable mystery on the bestial floor.â€To explore all choral titles in College Choral Series please click here.

Published by Graham Yates (A0.887973). Based on the ancient Latin text by Prudentius Aurelius, made famous by the evocative translations of Neale and Davis, this new setting of Corde Natus (Of the Father's Love Begotten) presents a beautiful choral reflection on love, creation and worship. Sometimes associated with Advent or Christmas, the lyrics are typically associated with the Gregorian chant: Divinum Mysterium - a style of singing that is difficult for many congregations, even when updated to modern notation in hymnals. This anthem re-presents the timeless lyrics with steady meter, regular phrases full of step-wise melodic motion, with plenty of unison and light choral harmony. It functions both as a piece suitable for amateur choirs, as well as having enough challenges to engage a more advanced choir. The piano part flows in and through the melody, leading to the punctuating moment of each verse: Alleluia..

However, this version adds syncopation and counter melodies to the lower voices, as modern accompaniment for an ancient melody. With new lyrics written expressly for wedding preludes and processionals, this arrangement is suitable for flutes, oboes, or violins, together with b flat clarinet, and either a cello or bassoon. For example, the accompanying mp3 features a flute, violin, clarinet, and cello combo that seems to blend well.

In 1853, still grieving for his three-year-old daughter's passing from brain ramollissement, the words of Scottish cleric Henry Lyte's hymn - Abide with me - came to English choirmaster William Monk's mind.  Although the hymn already had a tune, he was inspired by the thought of another and wrote the noble EVENTIDE within 10 minutes.  It was first published in 1861 in Hymns Ancient & Modern. It is performed at funerals, at Remembrance services, and even at sporting events (FA Cup). This setting is in the key of Eb Major, the same as the Hymnals, permitting it to be used as an accompaniment to singing and on its own.  The instrumental leads and harmonies differ for verses 1/3, 2/4 and verse 5.Instrumentation is for British Brass Band instruments of Cornet, Eb Tenor Horn, and Bb Euphonium (TC).  F Horn and Bass Clef Euphonium alternates are included.Duration ~ 4:40 10 pages.

Opus/Catalog Number: IWM 1 Key/Tone: E flat major Movements/Sections: Andante Year/Date of Composition: 1861 Difficulty: Grade 2/12 (Easy) Obs.: This hymn is sung by Christians all over the world in times of sorrow and deep distress. The lyrics were written in 1847 by Henry Francis Lyte, an English pastor, poet and musician, only a few weeks before he died from tuberculosis. He was inspired by Saint Luke's account of Christ's appearance with His two disciples on the way to Emmaus: They urged Him strongly: Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over. (Luke 24:29). The music was composed by William Henry Monk, music editor of the famous Anglican Church hymnal Hymns Ancient and Modern, and it was included in the first edition of that hymnal in 1861. Mrs. Monk has described in her own words the context: This tune was written at a time of great sorrow - when together we watched, as we did daily, the glories of the setting sun. As the last golden ray faded, he took some paper and penciled that tune which has gone all over the earth. This score is the complete version of Abide With Me for choir SATB. Included: Full score and separated parts for each voice.

Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533596). Ancient Airs (2004) for solo soprano saxophone was written for and is dedicated tosaxophonist Paul Wehage. It is in two movements, each with a spirit of ancient airsre-imagined in a modern context. The ancestry of most woodwind instruments as folkinstruments is the inspiration for the work's concept. The piece should always beplayed with a lyrical, singing approach.Beyond the Mountain uses as its basic musical material a simple transformation of amodal melody in D minor. Gradually tones are added borrowed from othermodalities. The opening section is slow and lyrical. The middle section is moreactive -- contrasting the D minor chord tones with the added diminished tones of thefirst section. The final section recalls the material of the opening with a widertransformation.Forgotten Incantation uses a wider modal language than the first movement.Although still generally slow and song-like, it is more energetic. Energetic gesturesinterrupt and drive the song narrative forwards.
