The work The Shepherd’s Song by Felix Mendelssohn, presented as a reprint for the first time, is his only known original composition for flute. Although Mendelssohn frequently and skilfully used wind instruments in his orchestral works, he never provided them with significant parts, neither in his chamber music works not as solo instrument, which may have been due to the technical shortcomings of the instrument prior to the revolutionary inventions of Theobald Böhm. The short composition The Shepherd’s Song was published for the first time after the death of the composer in 1889, including an additional piano accompaniment and an alternative violin part. The arranger and editor was the organist and composer Berthold Tours (1838-1897). Since the flute literature contains only few musical pieces of major composers of the Romantic era, it is surprising that this composition, which had been printed more than 100 years ago, has remained undiscovered for such a long time, thus remaining widely unknown to the public until today. The Shepherd’s Song can be performed with flute (violin) solo or with the piano accompaniment by Berthold Tours.The Shepherd’s Song ist Mendelssohns einzige bekannte Originalkomposition für Flöte. Die kurze Komposition wurde erst nach seinem Tod 1889 mit einer hinzugefügten Klavierbegleitung und einer alternativen Violinstimme publiziert. I’ve suggested that this piece grows in volume throughout the 3 verses that I’ve arranged, and to support this, the number of notes each part has gradually increases, so that the notes have less time to die away before they are replaced. So part of the build in volume happens automagically!There are no page turns. The soundfile alongside the score is from the 3rd verse where you can hear that the sound is becoming busy and powerful. Guitar 6 requires the bottom string tuned down to D. I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

This is a companion to my earlier volume Chording to Consort which presented 35 Renaissance Dance band tunes and Chansons and arranged them as a single melody line with chords derived from the original harmony lines. In this volume I have reunited the remaining 17 of the pieces with the lower parts in the score, so that with more collaborators, the fullness of the original arrangement can be heard. The chords are still present, so if the ensemble is short handed, and lines are missing, the arrangements will still work. What is more, by contrasting the melody and chords with the full scoring, it should be possible to work some light and shade into performances. Instrumentation for these pieces was not specified in the original prints. The range of each part is quite limited, and though the harmonies may seem strange at times, key signatures are kind to the less experienced musician. If enthusiasm takes hold, then reproductions of early music instruments are sold by some very talented makers, as well as coming up on auction sites. Otherwise, it is possible to put together a fairly convincing ensemble with recorders, violins, a cello and mandolins, bouzoukis, flutes or guitars and gradually introduce the authentic instruments as they become available.

While still maintaining this idea of calm and ambient energy, the main theme should be reflective of an old spaghetti western film. The vibraphonist should play loud and proud.When the piece moves into the heavier 6/8 section, the battery should be sensitive to the melodic instruments. The song is in the Dorian mode and thought to have originated over four hundred years ago. Scarborough (SKAH-buh-ruh) is an English coastal town in the county of Yorkshire. It was occupied by the Romans during the fourth and fifth centuries but today has become the largest holiday resort on the Yorkshire coast with a thriving fishing industry. There are many different versions of the lyrics and by the end of the 19th century, dozens of variants existed. The repeated chorus of “parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme” is significant. In olden times, these herbs had medicinal purposes. In addition, parsley was associated with comfort, sage with strength, rosemary with love and thyme with courage. The song takes the form of a melancholy dialogue between two individuals who were once lovers but now live separate lives. Each of them asks the listener to pass on a message to the other. They toured the streets of Lima until the first half of the 20th century. Their cries used to be short songs that described the products they sold. There were pregoneros for all kinds of goods, from fruit to potatoes, to drinks of all types. One of the most remembered pregones is the one that advertised a type of sweet roll known as hot revolution, made of sugar, cloves and cinnamon. This piece is based on this tune, mixed with some Peruvian rhythms, like the Marinera and the Peruvian Waltz. In a broader sense, a pregón is an announcement, a proclamation of something good that is coming. Therefore, it seemed very appropriate to me in these times of global pandemic. I hope its light, dance-like character invites people to think of better times to come.

Brass Ensemble: 3 Trumpets and 2 Trombones - Grade 2.This is also a transcription and a small adaptation of the original score.I chose “La Bourrée” by Michael Praetorius mainly for educational purposes thanks to the not excessive difficulty, but perfect for students with an intermediate level of preparation. Furthermore, the skillful writing of Praetorius and the beauty of this short composition of his, make the piece absolutely suitable to be included in any concert program.Starting from the 4 canonical parts, I focused above all on the redistribution of the voices bringing them to 5 and intervening on the reorganization of the refrains. Always with the utmost respect for the original score, I simply imagined two opposing choirs that alternate, responding to each other and becoming protagonists from time to time, thus replacing the mere repetition of the refrains.The themes, in turn and to the extent possible, were distributed across all the voices using, in some cases, even simple doubling.As in the adaptation of Contrapunctus I by J. S. Bach, ( https://www.sheetmusicplus.com/en/product/contrapunctus-i-from-the-art-of-the-fugue-bwv-1080-22828292.html ) the choice to use 3 trumpets and 2 trombones, and not the more typical brass quintet (2 trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba), was dictated by the formation for which I made the transcription.Finally, on a didactic level, this piece was fundamental to consolidate a formation at the first experiences and allowed me to deepen the salient aspects of ensemble music such as listening, musical breathing and interplay in its broadest sense.To the individual parts, as usual, I also added that of the horn in F, replacing the 3rd trumpet. At your discretion, of course, to decide whether to replace it or double it directly.The total duration is about 2 minutes and 20 seconds and the midi audio should be useful to get an idea of the arrangement and to be able to study the individual parts.Good Music!am.
