These pieces, originally written for Trumpets and Drums, were published in 1884 when John Philip Sousa was in his fourth year as Director of the Marine Band.This small collection has now been arranged with eight different groupings in mind: two trumpets, trumpet/horn, trumpet/trombone, two horns, horn/trombone, two trombones, trombone/tuba, and two tubas. As these versions are all in the same key, less likely pairings such as trumpet/tuba and horn/tuba can be performed with players viewing their respective parts. I intend this arrangement to be useful to instructors for multiple reasons: learning clefs, mastering partials, studying form and construction on a small scale, and testing memorization. The multiple versions allow instructors continued use as their students’ needs develop. Of course, wherever trombone is named the euphonium is readily substituted. Treble clef readers should use the Trumpet parts, while Bass clef readers can use the Trombone parts.

This version was also recorded on May 21, 1930 by Bix Beiderbecke and Hoagy Carmichael with Carson Robison on vocals and released as a Victor 78, V-38139-A and 25371. In 1996 it was released on CD on the album Bix Beiderbecke 1927–1930.[3] According to Philip R. Evans, Bix Beiderbecke's biographer, in the second chorus of this recording, violinist Joe Venuti can be heard singing Barnacle Bill the Shit-head, either to express his attitude toward the record producer, or typical of his wacky sense of humor. Esten Spurrier, a friend of Beiderbecke's, is quoted by Evans as saying that Beiderbecke told him he could not believe the record would be pressed and had felt that it had been done just for laughs. Beiderbecke cut loose on the tune with what is believed to be one of his finest cornet solos. John Valby (aka Dr. Dirty) also recorded the song.The tune has inspired a Fleischer Studios Betty Boop cartoon and two films, as well as the name of a rock on Mars. Louis Jordan and the Tympany Five (then known as The Elks Rendezvous Band) recorded a clean version in 1938.[4] In the first Fleischer Popeye cartoon, Popeye the Sailor (1933), Barnacle Bill was used as the recurring theme for the Bluto character. Published by Bud Caputo (A0.826631). Tre Blue is a 12 bar blues in a jazz waltz setting. The use of piano and drums is important but the guitar is optional. The blues progression is the best place to start students on the road to successful jazz improvisation as the blues scale may be used throughout the 12 measure chord progression. A home practice sheet is included for student use. Encourage students to memorize the blues scale and then apply jazz rhythms while altering the sequence of the jazz scale notes. As in all jazz string ensemble arrangements, the use of one solo amplified bass works just fine. However, it is possible to have all basses double the written walking lines except for at the improvisation section where on solo bass is preferred.

According to Carmichael, the inspiration for Stardust came to him while he was on the campus of his alma mater, Indiana University, in Bloomington, Indiana. He began whistling the tune, then rushed to the Book Nook, a popular student hangout, and started composing. He worked to refine the melody over the course of the next several months. There have been many interpretations of the standard over the decades, both as a jazz instrumental and as a popular song. As a teenager, I was definitely exposed to a fair amount of their music for some reason. It's not always easy to transform this kind of music into an idiom that sounds good as instrumental chamber music, however, this is part of my quest to develop a broad range of popular music that I can play live with a small group on the horn.This is great for university students and professionals... maybe even high school students. There are not a lot of great, challenging horn quartet arrangements out there, like this one is. This arrangement helps fill a niche for small ensemble in that horn quartet music typically lacks repertoire in most contemporary and rock genres. This one has a kit part included, which isn't necessary to perform this quartet, but might make it easier if a quartet to perform it with drums if they wanted to.The melody gets passed around a bit so it's fun and interesting for everyone. Score, parts and cover arts included. I hope someone out there tries this arrangement and has fun!

Ranges are comfortable and mostly in first position allowing for younger players to manage this nicely. The piano and drums parts are optional but will add greatly to the jazz flavor.

The lyrics are clean and suitable for high school choral groups. Additional support lyrics are added to support rap soloist. The tempo and style has been changed to Cool Swag with quarter = 110. Overall, this is a new fun re-imagined rendition of an old classic that high school students and their audiences should also find quite enjoyable.
