The anthology includes 13 Playford tunes and is available in its entirety as a separate download. For the Regal Playford series, these duos available as individual downloads for those who prefer to explore one tune at a time. What's more, for this series I offer the tune from the anthology along with another version: The alternate version adds divisions, a common performance practice for Renaissance and English Country Dance music. These duos are delightful for study as well as performance. We are recording all of our duo anthologies in 2015, and that challenging but satisfying journey has inspired us to explore more deeply the practice of adding variations and divisions to Playford's music. The art of divisions makes the performance unique and also extends it. I've decided to make the results available as sheet music as the Regal Playford series.

I have always loved this hymn, and one Sunday morning when I had been called upon to write something lyric for our brass quartet (two trumpets in Bb, horn in F, and tuba), I went straight for It Is Well With My Soul. This arrangement tells in music the story of Horatio Spafford and the circumstances under which he wrote the lyric for this hymn. The piece opens with sounding of the horn of Spafford’s ship as she passes over the point at which Spafford's four daughters were lost. The first verse builds dramatically as the lyric comes to Spafford and ends with the lovely chorus. The next section is based on the third stanza of the hymn in which Spafford writes, My sin, not the part, but the whole, is nailed to the cross… The horn gets the melody, evoking the sound of Spafford’s own voice, and the other instruments vividly paint the hammering of the nails. However, as Spafford moves into the chorus, the harmony becomes dark and uncertain as Spafford’s grief overwhelms him; his faith wavers as he tries to believe what he is writing. Then, the melody transfers to the trumpet as Spafford is answered by the higher voice from above-his daughters assuring him that, yes, it IS well, it is well. The piece then ends with a peaceful statement of the chorus, evocative of the rolling sea and Spafford’s soul at peace. This piece can be played by a student ensemble; the primary challenge is in achieving the level of expression and emotion required to pull off a piece like this.

It is the 10th movement of the cantata Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben. It was written during Bach's first year in Leipzig, Germany. Bach did not compose the melody. That was written by Johann Schop. Bach only harmonized and orchestrated Schop's melody. A transcription of Jesu was done by English pianist Myra Hess (1890-1965), and was published in 1926 for solo piano.In 1934, Hess' version was adapted for piano duet. British organist Peter Hurford made a transcription of Jesu for organ. Today, Bach's piece is often performed at weddings and funerals. Bach wrote the piece for voices with trumpet, oboes, strings and continuo. Professor Frank Marion Davis (1839-1896) was an American educator, singer, and composer of both hymns and secular works. Among his secular works were a number of collections of polkas and waltzes written for solo piano. This series of works presents arrangements of a number of Davis’ compositions prepared for the instrumentation of Alford’s Hungry Five polka band books and serve as a fine addendum to those familiar pieces. While the clarinet parts tend to be the most active, they often feature diatonic scalar patterns. All parts should remain accessible to most intermediate-level players.
