HARD TO SAY I'M SORRY (Chicago)- GUITAR QUARTET/large ensembleFor Classical or Acoustic GuitarDerek Hasted writes This power ballad makes a wonderful concert item for a Guitar Quartet or large ensemble - it has a big sound for surprisingly little difficulty.My quartet has parts that increase slightly in complexity from bass to tune, so there’s something for everyone here. The bass line is supplied in both treble and bass clefs, and the two parts are identical, so for a large ensemble, you can have one or the other or both in your performance.Everything is comfortable to play, and my transcription is based closely on the official video from Chicago. I have changed the key very slightly so that the deep bass notes fit on the guitar’s bottom strings and the tune is placed comfortably on the neck. There are no page turns in the part score.The music rises and falls as the song progresses, making the dynamics happen almost automatically. But there are plenty of opportunities in the phrasing to make this piece  absolutely magical.The breathtaking key-change of the original is included!I hope you enjoy playing this piece!This is one of a large and growing range of accessible ensembles from experienced arranger Derek Hasted, and is supplied as full score and parts. All parts will have a number of transpositions suitable for the instruments that are capable of playing those parts, eg, Part 2 will have parts for violin, B flat clarinet and trumpet, and E flat alto sax.  This will save music directors' time in having to write out additional parts.Optional parts are included for tuned and untuned percussion, guitar (chords) and bass guitar (notation and TAB), a keyboard part appropriate to the difficulty level, and a rehearsal piano part which is a fuller realisation of the piece and could be played by a more advanced student or the music director.If the numbers of players on each part allows, the music director can feel free to 'solo' instruments and vary the orchestration, especially on repeats, to create variety in instrumental colour.

It will suit a quartet or a larger ensemble.My arrangement is just a semitone lower than the original and moves the piece to a familiar and comfortable set of notes for the intermediate player.There is limited Left Hand fingering - whilst the lower parts remain in first position much of the time, the upper parts go up the neck. Players confident up the neck might stay up there, but less experienced players might want to return to more familiar territory as soon as possible, so please add the fingering that works for you.The original has the luxury of instruments with long sustain, and with contrasting tone colours. In order to make sure that the tune cuts through, be sure to listen to those around you…The whole piece is here, lasting 5 minutes or so. After an instrumental introduction, based on the refrain from the original hymn by Robert Lowry (1864), the newly composed verses begin with a musical theme meant to represent flowing water in a rippling river or stream. The original lyrics are adapted for all five verses and the refrain. The first verse is followed by the refrain, adapted from the original hymn. After that the refrain follows verses 3 and 5. The song ends on the final refrain, as the tempo slows and the flowing water theme ends. The vocals start out unison, but quickly divide out to three parts, all in a comfortable range. The melody in the verses shifts from soprano to alto, just before it gets too low for some sopranos. However altos or baritones could probably sing the melody, as the highest notes are likely still contained within their upper range. Thus the piece could be performed as a solo for altos or baritones. Though the melody shifts, a bit, from soprano to alto, it is easily heard in continuity. Thus, intuitively, the audience, or congregation, will clearly hear the melody, and be easily able to sing along. The Lead Sheet (with chord symbols) and scores provided here, contain the three vocal parts, violin, viola and piano. With the chord symbols provided, add guitar, bass, etc. As you listen to the example provided, you will hear a string trio playing in the accompaniment, along with the piano. The violin, viola and violoncello adds a nice dimension to the accompaniment sound. A digital recording of this accompaniment is also available by this publisher; see item number S0.870603.
