This Trio Sonata was published in Hamburg by Telemann in 1733 in the third volume of his Tafelmusik. The original was scored for flute, violin, cello and continuo. By 1733 the use of the continuo playing from a figured bass supported by a cello was falling out of use. In this piece, the use of the cello as a solo instrument effectively made the inclusion of the continuo redundant. In making this arrangement for flute, clarinet & bassoon or cello I have not included the continuo. Without the continuo, the Trio - still firmly entrenched in the Baroque style - closely resembles the three part Inventions of Telemann’s contemporary, J. S. Bach or the three part flute sonatas in Eb and G minor originally attributed to him but now considered to be the work of his son C.P.E. Bach. A set of 6 Quatuors ou Trios by Telemann clearly makes the continuo part optional. The arrangement is edited so that the style is true to the original. All edited phrasings (generally more suited to wind instruments) are shown using dashed lines. Telemann did not indicate any dynamics and none have been added. It is notable that Telemann developed his musical material throughout each movement and there are no repeated sections in this piece. There are four movements, Adagio, Allegro, Dolce and Allegro. The three parts are intended for players of equal accomplishment to delight their audiences.

From the Composer:I committed last year (2022) to review my musical works that have been in digital storage, complete them as necessary, and release them for the world to hear. I finally finished my first work on this list, one that's been on my hard drive in one version or another since 1999 (that's 24 whole years!).Las Follias de España (which despite its name, originally came from Portugal) is a chord progression usually in either D minor or G minor in the form of i-V-i-VII-III-VII-i-V. Composers for the last 500 years have used this chord progression to come up with some fantastic theme and variations, ranging from unaccompanied works, trio sonatas, to even full orchestral implementations. You can spend a looooong time listening to all the beautiful compositions that composers have made over the centuries highlighting this very captivating set of chords.I humbly submit my own version of La Folia in D minor for String Trio and Cembalo (harpsichord). I wrote my first version of this in my senior year of High School as a challenge to myself to write music in a genre I loved. I made updates here and there over the years, but its sat on a hard drive the entire time. It's taken me months to essentially rework it to my satisfaction and has been submitted for copyright. I have uploaded it to YouTube to share with others.BIG SHOUT OUTS to the three composers that inspired me in this work:Corelli: - His version of La Folia is probably the most popular for violinists, especially those that play out of the Suzuki books. I included a modified version of his Folia (Variation 9) in my work (with all other parts being vastly different from his interpretation) as an homage to his work.J.S. Bach - He showed me that music can be as intelligent as it is beautiful. I have two variations inspired by his work. Variation 8 is one that I wrote this year (2023) which I wanted to write for a long time is a variation that showcases the Harpsichord. Bach's keyboard works and unaccompanied violin works inspired me here. Second, Variation 14 I feel has Bach's inspiration all over it. The violin parts are each playing separate distinct melodies in double counterpoint which trade parts on the repeat. The bass line follows a pattern that Bach has employed for the bass on a number of Violin concertos and lastly, the Harpsichord treble part is a mensuration canon based on one of the violin parts, with the keyboard part playing the melody 4x as fast with variations. Lastly on a play of numbers, number 14 was a very special number for Bach, and as a tribute, I've made this the 14th variation in my work. This was also a new variation I added this year (2023) as well.Vivaldi - My first musical love. I feel that I captured a little bit of his musical DNA in all my works and this piece showcases this. Vivaldi's works is what made me fall in love with Baroque music and I am indebted to him for the profound impact his works have had on my life.So here you go. 413 measures. Rosamunde, Fürstin von Zypern (Rosamunde, Princess of Cyprus) is a play by Helmina von Chézy, which is primarily remembered for the incidental music which Franz Schubert composed for it. Music and play premiered in Vienna's Theater an der Wien on 20 December 1823 There are 10 pieces of incidental music, this is no 5. Entr'acte No. 3 in Bâ™ major (Andantino) is one of the two best-known pieces in the score. The main theme was used again in the Impromptu in Bâ™, Op. 142 (D 935), No. 3. Bach's Great Fantasia and Fugue in G minor, BWV 542, is a monumental work for organ, first performed by Bach (according to some scholars, possibly improvised on the spot!) in Hamburg in 1720. Over the years it has been arranged for various ensembles, including full orchestra, but this is the first arrangement I'm aware of for woodwind quintet. The character of the piece is somewhat changed, becoming livelier and more dance-like, but it remains a wonderful flight of fancy (arguably the original meaning of fugue), and by the end the attentive listener may be quite carried away.This is part of Kaplan's project to enhance and broaden the woodwind-quintet repertoire with both great classics and beautiful lesser-known works. The varied timbres of the woodwind instruments add clarity to contrapuntal writing, allowing the individual parts to be more clearly perceived and followed by the listener. (Kaplan has made many other woodwind-quintet arrangements, for most of which the sheet music is available on this website.).

Â It is written in the Italian Corant style in the characteristic Fast(Allegro) 3/4 with rapid running passages of eighth notes (quavers) which alternate scalar steps with large leaps. Â Traditionally the piece would have been performed very cleanly, not legato.My arrangement takes the melody and passes it between the three instrument parts. Â I wrote a highly ornamented continuo for each part when not playing melody. Â In true Baroque style I have created a tight interplay between the parts. Â Each part also has a rather wide range of about 2 octaves. Â Although in a Minor Key, this piece is very bright and uplifting. Â It is very accessible and thus a concert crowd pleaser. Â Great for the student recitals too to learn and show mastery of Baroque techniques of clean ensemble playing and ornamentation. Practical performance would include two pianos - one of which is tuned a quarter-tone flat or sharp - but it is possible to play on a specially constructed quarter-tone keyboard for one performer.This piece was heavily inspired by Wyschnegradsky's Quarter-Tone Preludes, as well as Chopin's First Ballade in G Minor, and was composed when I was in college (the final version was completed after I left college). It's essentially a solo instrument tone poem that describes someone staggering home after a long night of drinking out, along the way dodging a train and instigating some cops that pursue him, then stumbling upon a carnival that rather promptly boots him out because of his provocative behavior. He eventually finds his way home, now able to rest after a bizarre night of debauchery.

(I have the entire sonata done (transposed) to D major as that's a more practical key for recorder.) The low Eb note on a tenor recorder is often very weak and this change of key fixes that problem. In this new key of D, the Siciliano ended up being in F# minor. This key forces the tenor recorder to play a high C#, often playable with the fingering of Ø13457 (pinching the thumb = Ø). The arranger has several instruments which will give a very convincing high C# this way. This piece is perfectly fine for church services.

The next section uses the counter-theme again and then presents the theme in an embellished manner. Again the counter-theme is present followed by the embellished theme. After a brief interlude the piece picks up again with the counter-theme where it slowly and quietly settles in repose.

The piece is in six movements, based on those of a traditional Baroque suite. Each movement is dedicated to the memory of a friend of the composer (or in one case, two brothers) who had died fighting in World War I.The six movements are:Prélude. Vif (E minor)Fugue. Allegro moderato (E minor)Forlane. Allegretto (E minor)Rigaudon. Assez vif (C major)Menuet. Allegro moderato (G major)Toccata. Vif (E minor) Ravel also produced an orchestral version of the work in 1919, although this omitted two of the original movements.The movements used were Nos.1, 3, 5 and 4 in that order.The word tombeau in the title is a musical term popular from the 17th century, meaning a piece written as a memorial. The specific Couperin, among a family noted as musicians for about two centuries, that Ravel intended to evoke is thought to be François Couperin the Great (1668–1733).Ravel stated that his intention was to pay homage more generally to the sensibilities of the Baroque French keyboard suite, not necessarily to imitate or pay tribute to Couperin himself in particular. The trumpet part is slightly easier than the woodwind parts, save for the rapid mute changes.In compound quadruple meter (12/8) throughout, Impromptu features some rhythmically challenging figures, including 2:3 and 3:4 polyrhythms.Tonally and formally speaking, the piece is in concert E natural minor, with a B section in the relative G major, returning to E minor for a development section, a sort of jazz-harmony coda, and a piercing fortississimo unresolved tutti minor 9 chord to finish.Impromptu has not been performed since its premiere in 2000.
