Hebrew.This arrangement was commissioned jointly by Brad Spencer, Scott Spencer, and the Washington Men's Camerata and first performed by the Camerata on June 13, 2015, at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. Naomi Shemer wrote this lovely poem honoring the fabled city, Jerusalem. Its history and mystery are evoked in each verse and in the passionate refrain. At the beginning, Jerusalem is seen asleep, alone, guarding the Temple Wall at its center. Then we picture a deserted, conquered city, empty and desolate. In the third verse, the writer reveals herself as the latest and least of all the notable scribes who have invoked the city, those writers of magnificent Psalms, odes and poems. At the end, people have returned to the city, enlivening its streets and neighborhoods, adding new chapters to its story. Naomi Shemer's music, with its mixture of nostalgia, melancholy, and desire, lifts her verses to memorable phrases: one does not want the song to end. In performing the work, follow the given dynamic markings and allow the song to slowly accumulate dramatic tension, saving the climax for the final refrain. -Alice ParkerDuration: 6:30.

Edward Taylor Paull (1858-1924) was an American composer of marches and rags who was successful in producing a large number of circus marches in the late 1800’s/early 1900’s.. The Ben Hur Chariot Race March was the first publication he released in 1894. He also arranged Harry J. Lincoln's hit, Midnight Fire Alarm.These arrangements have been prepared for the instrumentation of Alford’s Hungry Five polka band books and serve as a fine addendum to those familiar pieces. While the clarinet parts tend to be the most active, they often feature diatonic scalar patterns that remain accessible to most intermediate-level players. The trombone part here is more active than many other arrangements for this kind of ensemble and could also be handled by Euphonium if desired. Again, it’s mostly short diatonic 16th note bursts. At the risk of sounding sloppy, it may be better to take the tempo a little lesser than a circus march tempo to accommodate. The original version of E Toro nga Hau: The Three Winds was written for oboe, clarinet and bassoon in 2001 and premiered by the Eastwind Trio d’Anches (the faculty reed trio from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with the composer on bassoon) during a tour in New Zealand and Australia in May 2001. The premiere of the version for saxophone trio was performed by members of the Red Clay Saxophone Quartet on February 5, 2008.E Toro nga Hau: The Three Winds was inspired by the Australasian tour and my return home to New Zealand as a performer. Another inspiration was that my dear Grandmother passed away at the age of 94 in February 2001. Due to this there are elements of sadness and happiness throughout the piece. The bittersweet first movement begins melancholy, with a melody that freely switches between minor and major modes, but ends up with a lively dancing section focusing on happy memories, where the chickens from my grandmother’s farm may even be heard. The second movement is lively throughout with extensive use of mixed meter and includes a jazz rock interlude.While the work does not contain any actual New Zealand elements in the music, it was evocative of my time spent there growing up. It is in a style typical of my writing, containing jazzy influences combined with the more traditional. The title is given in Maori (the language of the native Polynesian race in New Zealand) and English and merely relates to the fact that it is written for three woodwind instruments. This work has been performed throughout North America and the South Pacific.This work also exists in two double reed versions: one for oboe, English horn, and bassoon, and another for oboe and two bassoons.
