The Beltane celebrations on the Hill of Uisneach in Ireland and the Edinburgh Fire Festival are long-standing and beloved. These days, Beltane has been embraced by modern witches and mystics as a celebration of the energies of Spring. You can probably find a Spring festival with a maypole and a bonfire near you. Witches celebrate Beltane on May 1st as the height of Spring. They give thanks for the fertility of our planet and the ability of the Earth to renew herself. They revel in the new growth and general fecundity of the season. As co-creators with the Universe, witches also like to tap into the energy of Spring to help them bring new life into their own endeavours.They have a maypole and a bonfire. They celebrate the sexual union of Mother Earth and Green Man. The maypole is a symbol of masculine energy which is then joyfully embraced by colourful ribbons, symbolic of the beautiful abundance and diversity of our living world.Beltane is a pagan Celtic festval, but as is their wont, the Roman Catholic Church has modified it: into May Day, with participation of priests. Even the maypole upset many Christians.The sections of the piece are: Introduction to the witches theme, Witches fly in, Witches dance round the bonfire, Maypole dance, Witches inspect the finished maypole and disperse.The witches have a ground bass. I hint at their suspected spiritual allegiance to the Devil by including an occasional diabolus in musica.The Maypole Dance tune is English seventeenth C traditional.DURATION: 4 minutes.INSTRUMENTATION: String Quartet.

English • German • French.Tippett’s decision to extract the four Ritual Dances from his opera 'The Midsummer Marriage' as a self-contained concert suite reflects the fact that the medium of dance was always present in his conception of the opera. From the start, there was to be an interaction within the opera between the real world and the world of mythology, partly Greek, partly Celtic. This mythological element culminates, in the finished opera, in the 'Ritual Dances' of Acts 2 and 3. Tippett himself described his opera as ‘a kind of elaborate 'L’après midi d’un faune’, in which the 'Ritual Dances' display a powerful sexual energy, though of a very different kind from Debussy’s voluptuous langour. Composition of The Midsummer Marriage occupied Tippett for six years from 1946 to 1952. The first performance of the Ritual Dances as a concert suite was given in Basel on 13 February 1953 by the Basel Kammerorchester conducted by Paul Sacher, and preceded the premiere of the complete opera by two years. Today the Ritual Dances rival the Concerto for Double String Orchestra (ETP 1331) as Tippett’s most widely-performed orchestral work.

The second of the two dance-movements in the Paranormania-Trio, that (in reference to the slavic myths of the Wila) depicts a group of ghostly figures gathering around a person and forcing them to dance and play themself into a breathless frenzy.Featuring an upbeat syncopated dance-rhythm and a constant switch between two different themes and tempos, this ghostly dance steadily increases its emotional intensity, so much so that the instrumentalists even get out of tune at one point. After a short planned tuning-break a sort of anti-climax is reached at the end, where all the building-up culminates in an almost sarcastic, morendo-like fadeout, marking the collapse of the poor soul that ultimately danced themself to death. Rather, Holst set these tunes in the same kinds of harmonies and textures that he was using in his other works, also taking the opportunity to experiment with other influences that were in the air at this time, an openness few of his British contemporaries shared. The Floral Dance is a popular English song describing the annual Furry Dance in Helston, Cornwall.The music and lyric were written in 1911 by Kate Emily Barkley (Katie) Moss (1881-1947) who was a professional violinist, pianist and concert singer. She was brought up in London and studied at the Royal Academy of Music. The song tells the story of an incident that apparently actually happened to Moss herself on a visit to Helston during the springtime 'Furry Dance' celebrations and the song was reportedly written directly afterwards as she was going home on the train. The songbook cover states that the music was founded on an old Cornish air. Katie introduces the original Furry Dance tune in the piano part just as the singer is describing the sound of the band, with its cornet, clarinet and big trombone; fiddle, cello, big bass drum; bassoon, flute and euphonium. In 1978, Terry Wogan recorded a version which reached #21 in the same chart.[3] Wogan's version was accompanied by the Hanwell Band, and omitted the final verse containing the climax to the story. On Top of the Pops, Wogan sang it live to a backing track.[4] A version of the song was prominently featured near the beginning of the 1996 film, Brassed Off.In 2016, a campaign for Christmas Number One was launched for Terry Wogan's version of The Floral Dance after his death.
