The orchestral parts and vocal score of a Neo-Baroque, medium-sized, large scale composition for 4 vocal soloists, mixed chorus in 4 to 8 voices, and full orchestra with organ, setting the traditional canticle text, mostly with church modes and alternating polyphonic intricacies with solemn, intense or profound moments. It would work both for worship and in concert, as it includes powerful outbursts, elaborate counterpoint, and also soft and humble moments, while avoiding any harsh excesses of modernism. Total duration: 46 min. Performing Rights Organization: SOCAN. The audio sample is the 3rd movement. The first two choruses, in 4 parts, follow the general outline of the Baroque French overture: a solemn introduction followed by an elaborate fugue. The 3rd movement is a solemn arioso for bass, followed by a grand chorus in 4 and 5 parts. The 4th movement is an arioso for tenor, followed by a complex chorus in 5 parts. The 5th movement is a suite of two ariosos for alto and soprano, followed by a grand, but brief chorus in 6 parts, and then by a mysterious instrumental evocation of the Last Judgment. The 6th movement is a vocal quartet a cappella, based on a well-known Orthodox hymn and alternated with a refrain for chorus in 7 parts and organ, then followed by a grand choral complex ended in humble supplication. The final, 7th movement is a grand motet for double chorus and orchestra, with four themes more and more intricately combined, up to the majestic coda treated in quadruple counterpoint.

Published by Annemieke Lustenhouwer (A0.1195919). What happens when you close your eyes and you see yourself standing next to Mother Mary when Jesus dies? What do you see and what do you feel? That was what I’ve been asking myself for years when I read the text Stabat Mater. This composition tells about this experience and this questions. Sometimes a motif tells quite literally about this story, like the moment when Jesus is nailed down the cross: first the right hand, then the left hand and finaly with one nail both feet. In the first part of the composition, the viola tells with sforzato accents about this.This Stabat Mater is not only an expression of the pain of the Virgin Mother, but is also a tribute to JS Bach as well. Bach is by some seen as a fith evangelist. Nowadays there are still a lot of people who are affected by how his music tells about biblical stories, like I am. In this Stabat Mater I use the number 5 to express that: the first part is written in 5/4th and the last part Quando corpus et Amen is written with 5 parts in the choir. There can also be found a reworked choral in the choir passages of  O quam tristis et afflicta. It is the choral Wie nahe mir mein Ende from BWV 166.Polyfony is a returning presence in this Stabat Mater. I had an visual idea about this. When I was young I saw in an exhibition a tapestry with all kinds of colours and threads, and everything felt in motion. It was a kind of organized mess, but it was beautiful and felt perfect. I wondered if I could manage to express this idea in music as well. Under one of the polyphonic passages there is a Latin-American dance rhythm to express that motion. I heard that rhythm in my childhood in a rhythmbox of the keyboard of my dad. Another passage has the baroque sarabande-rhythme underneath in the double bass.A lullaby-feeling in some parts of the Stabat Mater tells about another story that got intertwined with this composition. It’s the story of a mother who rocks her terminal dying little son in her arms. I once read that story and it felt connected with the Stabat Mater text for a long time. I decided to express that as well.This composition is dedicated to the Dutch conductor Geert van den Dungen. However I saw many conductors, while playing the oboe and clarinet from a young age, there was nobody who let me think very deeply about music. Geert was the one who changed that for me. I started to study scores and developed a great interest in music analysis and music psychology. Many moments of inspiration and understanding for this Stabat Mater happened on choir rehearsals and concerts where Geert was working. The part for the fifth flute was figured and this would have enabled it to be played on a keyboard or transposed down an octave on a bassoon or cello. A bass clef part is included in the set of parts. The fifth part could also be played on a bass flute if one is available. The other parts could also be played on recorders, oboes or violins depending on the players available. There are 3 movements, Adagio and 2 contrasting Allegros. Duration: 22 – 24 minutes, Six Parts between 12 – 16 pp. Description: Each of the SerapeÌs has a programmatic subtitle that gives the listener a hint as to how to listen. SerapeÌs Nos. 1, 4 and 7 (subtitled Three Brothers) divide up the collection symmetrically as all three share variations of the same set of motivic layers. Nonetheless, despite their common genetic heritage, the three brothers all have radically different personalities. SerapeÌ No. 2 is called Burro for its loping cowboy-swing. Its seemingly infinite upward-spiraling progression through succeeding tonal centers reminds one of the mules on the switchbacks of the Grand Canyon. SerapeÌ No. 3, Starry Night, employs one of Korneitchouk's favorite devices of combing complex order out of chaos. Overlapping melodic patterns in 7/8, 8/8, 9/8, 10/8, 11/8, and 13/8 emerge -- three at a time -- out of constellations of apparently random notes. The brutal SerapeÌ No. 5, L.A. Smog, is rude. This SerapeÌ starts as a sonorous block of jackhammer intensity that later reveals itself to be in a very brisk 5/8 meter. In contrast, SerapeÌ No. 6 is the most peaceful and static SerapeÌ. It includes a musical portrait of the composer's refrigerator turning itself on and off in the dead of night. A drone, which suggests the 60-cycle hum of the refrigerator, anchors the subtle shifting and overlapping harmonies of the piece.
