Discover a new arrangement of Gustav Holst’s Brook Green Suite, now adapted for Brass Band. Originally composed in 1933 for the junior orchestra at St. Paul’s Girls School, Holst wrote this suite with the goal of providing his students with a piece that was both challenging and rewarding, while being accessible enough for young musicians. Despite ongoing health issues at the time, Holst managed to complete the suite and personally oversee its first informal performance in early 1934, just months before his passing.This three-movement suite—Prelude, Air, and Dance—is filled with the graceful lyricism and rhythmic energy characteristic of Holst’s later works. The Dance movement, in particular, features a lively tune that Holst recalled hearing at a puppet show during a holiday in Sicily, adding a personal touch to this cheerful finale.Though not drawing specifically on folk song, the Brook Green Suite embodies Holst’s approach to melody and style which are reminiscent of songs he had enountered. This arrangement for Brass Band brings new depth and color to the work, making it a dynamic addition to any programme.
