The music contains a well-known example of a Picardy third (G major cadence in the key of G minor). The author is unknown; the oldest known text was written down by Robert Croo in 1534, and the oldest known setting of the melody dates from 1591.[1] There is an alternative, modern setting of the carol by Kenneth Leighton, and another by Philip Stopford. Published by Daffiddle Music (A0.925228). This string quintet has four movements, based on a poem by Federico Garcia Lorca, in which he laments the death of a friend in a bullfight. Three of the movements relate directly to parts of the poem which bear the same titles, and suggest the poet's anguish at the death of his friend, eventual coming to terms and realising that although the spirit has fled the memory remains. The first movement represents people of all ages making their way to the bullfight, walking at different paces, and also conveys a feeling of impending doom. The quintet was written for friends of similar technical ability, with most of the material fairly distributed.

In this work are a multitude of emotions I was living or struggling with during a period where life never went as expected. The first movement, Glimmer, represents an individual seeing a faint light in the darkness unsure of what it truly is or how long the path to it will take. Regardless, they move towards it while reflecting on the possibilities of what awaits them. In the second movement, Beacon Bacchanal, the surety of reaching this goal has seduced this person into a doomed revelry of overconfidence. The celebration spirals out of control into Aura Awry where time churns on and inner demons surface. In the final movement, Shine, this individual finds themselves standing at the edge of the light. They do not know where it comes from or what lies ahead once they cross this threshold. Regardless, they step forth….
