Psalms 139.Mary Sidney (1561-1621) penned an English version of Psalm 139 which is set here for soprano solo, SA chorus, and keyboard. The piece begins with a haunting, almost talismanic setting of the text “Thou dost know when I sit down and rise up,†but it is set in Latin, and will return later as an accompaniment beneath the English text which is set to a beautiful, almost folk-like melody, albeit a bit more angular in spots. Yet the angularity suits the text perfectly and is comfortable. The result is a perfect anthem about God’s all-knowing and ever-present care. Duration: 6:00.

Published by Sy Brandon (A0.755261). Emoticons III is the third in a series of compositions that are designed to be aural representations of images that reflect emotions. This composition has eight short movements and is scored for wind quintet. I. Nebulous – The wandering tonality, slow tempo, frequent shifts of color, and lack of cadences gives this movement a feeling of vagueness. II. Puckish – This Allegretto movement has a playful quality that is created by staccato articulations, melodic leaps, unexpected use of rests and sudden tonality shifts to express an impish quality. III. Excited – A fast tempo and technical passages along with driving rhythms help this movement express excitement. IV. Horrified – Angular melodic lines, trills, dissonant chords, extreme ranges, and accents are all used to create this emotional representation. V. Jocular – This playful movement in an Allegretto tempo uses staccato, syncopation, meter change, dotted rhythms, and angular melodies for its laughing sounds. VI. Scattered – A Presto tempo with hemiola, staccato notes, and light scoring are used throughout this short movement that feels like it is constantly changing direction. VII. Regretful – This Lento movement has sad legato lines with unresolved dissonances at the beginning and end. The middle section creates a sense of hope but quickly returns to the sorrowful sound. VIII. Confident – This movement is in a march style with strong accents. Its clear lines and rhythms help portray strength in one’s beliefs.

Howard (A0.1477352). This grandiose, ceremonial piece is for a wind ensemble of woodwind and brass, with piano and 2 percussionists. The work takes a fragment from a theme by Bela Bartok, from his 1911 one-act opera Duke Bluebeard's Castle, and is a set of free variations, like a fantasy, upon this theme, within a vague ternary structure. The whole ensemble is often treated quite percussively, exploring angular snap rhythms, as well as inversions and symmetry of pitch. One percussionist plays marimba, while the other plays snare drum. The piece takes Bartok's motif as a starting point, before developing beyond this idiom. The work remains accessible to audiences, and can be played by more advanced performers. I call these duets Latin Dances, however I have never seen a latin dance in â…. But the general overall feel is somehow Latin to my ears. The first dance has a high F#, with the option of playing a B If you, like I, try to avoid playing high F#'s. The second dance has an almost circus calliope feeling making it an unusual tango. The third dance has an angular accompaniment to an otherwise latin danse melody. If played as a suite the duration is about 6:25.

The Easter Bonnet Bop is one in a series of ten Easter-themed duets each written in a different American dance style. The origins of the word Bop lie in the scat language of the ‘40s; Bop quickly became associated with the fast Bebop jazz of the period as musicians vocalised the offbeat rhythms of their angular melodies. Later in the ‘50s when Rockabilly and Rock’n’Roll first appeared, Bop was used to describe both the dance moves and the dance venues themselves. The Easter Bonnet Bop is suitable for players at an intermediate level and above, with the accessible key and range balanced by the fast tempo and syncopated rhythms and accidentals. With a playing-time of around one and a half minutes, The Easter Bonnet Bop is a perfect upbeat addition to any performance program, formal or informal. I wanted to write something based on a mediaeval mystery play and happened across an 11th Century version of the play of the Bridegroom – the tale of the wise and the foolish virgins. It was called Sponsus and is the oldest of this type of play written in both the vernacular and in Latin. What is even more extraordinary is that it is, in fact, a trilingual text in Latin, langue d'oc, and some words in the langue d'oïl. The passage which I have set is in langue d'oc, but for ease of singing I used a modern-French translation. This is scored for soprano, baroque violin, and viola da gamba. It can be performed at 415 or 440 ad libertum.I am very taken by the patchwork nature of mystery plays which is part promenade, part liturgy, part staged, part audience participation. I hope that having set a straightforwardly strophic text and using instruments more often heard in Early Music, jigsaws well with the more modern angular and sometimes dissonant nature of the melodic lines of this piece. I love the play of languages, and the mixing up through words and music of past, present, and future, revealing that time is perhaps a circuitous exploration rather than a strictly linear trajectory. And the end of all our exploring / Will be to arrive where we started / And know the place for the first time..

This famous song is from the cycle Weihnachtslieder (“Christmas Songsâ€) by the deeply spiritual German composer Peter Cornelius. Composed in 1856 and revised in 1859 and 1870, the cycle is one of the composer’s most popular works.
